Sony’s ECM-AX10 is a USB-C spatial audio microphone for smartphones, announced October 8, 2026, and offered for presale now through Sony and several authorized retailers. The US list price is $249.99 USD. To preorder, confirm that your phone runs iOS 18 or later or Android 14 or later, has a USB-C port, and appears on Sony’s supported-model list before you order.
What the ECM-AX10 is
Sony Electronics positions the ECM-AX10 at vloggers, mobile filmmakers, and content creators who want spatial audio without a separate field recorder. The microphone has four built-in omnidirectional capsules, weighs approximately 24 g, and plugs directly into a compatible smartphone. Sony describes three recording modes: Ambisonics, binaural, and stereo.

Sony also states that the ECM-AX10 is the world’s first Eclipsa Audio-certified microphone for smartphones, with certification dated September 15, 2026. Sony explains that certification confirms the product meets encoding and compatibility requirements based on the IAMF specification. Eclipsa Audio is built on IAMF, an open-source spatial audio specification that Sony says is available under a royalty-free license from the Alliance for Open Media. The “world’s first” wording is Sony’s own claim; it is not an independent verification against every competing product.
How to preorder
- Check your phone first. You need a USB-C port and iOS 18 or later or Android 14 or later. If your model is not on Sony’s supported-model list, Sony says it has not tested that device for operating quality, so treat it as unsupported.
- Open Sony’s US product page for the ECM-AX10 at electronics.sony.com. At the time of checking, it displayed $249.99.
- Choose a seller. Sony’s announcement names Sony, Amazon, B&H, Best Buy, Sweetwater, Guitar Center, and other authorized dealers as presale channels. Compare the seller’s stock status and delivery date, because presale terms are set by each seller.
- Read the return and delivery terms on the checkout page before you pay. Presale stock, shipping dates, and promotions can change, so the price and availability you see at order time are the ones that apply.

#1 Best Overall
- IMMERSIVE SPATIAL AUDIO: Four integrated omnidirectional microphone capsules capture balanced, positional sound with accurate 3D placement, bringing greater realism and immersion to videos.
- FLEXIBLE AUDIO FORMATS: Choose Ambisonics for immersive playback, binaural audio for headphone listening and broad platform compatibility, or conventional stereo for a familiar recording experience.
- CLEARER SOUND IN CHALLENGING ENVIRONMENTS: Switchable Noise Cut and Low Cut filters reduce unwanted background noise, low-frequency rumble, wind, air conditioning, and other vibrations. The included detachable fur-type windscreen further reduces wind noise outdoors.
- COMPACT USB TYPE-C DESIGN: Weighing approximately 24 g, the slim ECM-AX10 is easy to carry and connects directly to a compatible device through USB Type-C, with no extra connectors required.
- FLEXIBLE SHOOTING AND STABLE SETUP: A built-in accelerometer automatically detects the microphone’s orientation, while the included cold-shoe microphone holder and USB Type-C extension cable support stable shooting and flexible rigging.
Will it work with my phone?
Sony’s stated requirements are a short list, but each item matters:
- Port: USB-C. Phones with Lightning or a 3.5 mm jack need an adapter that Sony does not specify, so confirm compatibility with Sony’s list before buying one.
- Operating system: iOS 18 or later, or Android 14 or later.
- Model: Sony asks buyers to check its supported-model list. Devices not on that list have not been tested by Sony for operating quality.
- Performance: Sony says recording quality can vary with the phone’s processing performance.
Choosing a recording mode
The three modes are not interchangeable. Pick the one that matches where your audio will be published and how viewers will hear it.
Rank #2
- Lightweight Design: Weighing only 160 grams, this microphone is easy to carry and maneuver.
- Unidirectional Polar Pattern: Captures sound from a single direction for clear, focused audio.
- High Signal-to-Noise Ratio: With a 69 decibel signal-to-noise ratio, this microphone delivers clear audio even in noisy environments.
- XLR Connectivity: This microphone has a 3-pin XLR connector for easy connection to camcorders and other audio equipment.
- Premium Sony Branding: Part of Sony's ECM series, this microphone is built to professional standards and quality.
| Mode | What Sony says it is for | Key requirement or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ambisonics | Spatial audio for publishing in Eclipsa Audio on YouTube | Used with Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool app |
| Binaural | A three-dimensional experience designed for headphone listening, including where Eclipsa Audio is not supported | Intended for headphones |
| Stereo | A general-purpose mode for headphones and speakers | Usable with general recording and video apps |
If your goal is a YouTube video with spatial audio that viewers can hear as a 360-degree sound field, Ambisonics is the mode Sony ties to Eclipsa Audio publishing. If your footage will be watched on ordinary devices or edited in a standard app, stereo is the simpler route.

Sony’s Spatial Audio Video Tool app is available for iOS and Android. Sony says it can record video, review clips, make simple edits, and export content with spatial audio. Video recording, editing, and export depend on this app, so plan to install it before your first shoot.

The app’s role differs by mode. Ambisonics recordings are built for the spatial workflow the app supports, while stereo and binaural recordings can be used with general apps. If you plan to make spatial audio videos, confirm that your workflow runs through the app from capture to export.
4K recording is planned, not available
Sony lists 4K recording support as planned from December 2026 onward. Do not buy the ECM-AX10 on the assumption that 4K recording works now. Confirm current feature support on Sony’s product page before the December date.

What the evidence does and does not show
The launch materials describe features, specifications, and workflows. They do not include independent benchmarks, lab measurements, or side-by-side comparisons with other microphones. Sony’s qualitative description of sound is the vendor’s own statement. Sony’s announcement attributes this quote to Sony PCL Sound Engineer Mr. Iwana:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“The orchestral sound recorded with the ECM-AX10 captures the music with remarkable depth, with quick response in the low and low-mid ranges, while the high frequencies are expansive and moving. For ambient sound, it also delivers an impressive sense of presence, richly reproducing the three-dimensionality of sound and the spaciousness of a 360-degree sound field. I believe this microphone can vividly capture even the atmosphere of the moment, together with a three-dimensional sense of realism, elevating important videos into works that feel more real and memorable.”
Best Value
- Dual-channel wireless microphone for high-quality digital recording
- Communication is possible at up to 492 ft (150 m)
- High signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) microphone units
- Noise-suppressing filter functions
- Multi Interface (MI) Shoe compatible
Treat that as a description of Sony’s intended sound, not as evidence of how the microphone performs in your environment. If sound quality is the deciding factor, look for independent tests once reviewers have the unit.
