Sony plans to stop manufacturing game discs for new PlayStation releases starting in January 2028. The company says the change reflects the shift to digital distribution, but Sony Group CFO Lin Tao also acknowledged that players have strong emotional ties to physical games. The “we understand those emotions” remark was attributed to Tao in Sony’s FY2026 first-quarter earnings briefing—not to Ken Kutaragi, the historical creator of PlayStation.
Games released, or scheduled for disc release, before January 2028 are not affected by the announced transition. The unresolved questions concern what retailers will sell after that date, how boxed editions will work, and whether players will still have a meaningful choice between a disc and a download.

What Sony actually announced
The January 2028 cutoff applies to new disc production
In a PlayStation.Blog post published July 1, 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment said “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” New games will remain available through the PlayStation Store and through retailers, but in digital formats.
Sony explicitly said the transition “has no impact on games that already released, or will be releasing, prior to January 2028 in disc format.” That means the policy is not an announcement that existing PS5 or PS4 discs will suddenly stop working in 2028. It is a change to how new releases are manufactured and distributed. Sony has not announced a separate end date for support of previously released discs.

Digitalization is Sony’s stated reason
During the FY2026 first-quarter investor Q&A, Sony CFO Lin Tao described the broad digitalization of entertainment content as the biggest reason for the decision. GameSpot reported that Sony said 82% of consumers were choosing digital. That figure is presented as Sony’s reported consumer mix, not as a universal measurement of every PlayStation market or country.
The attribution matters
Reports from GameSpot and Gematsu reproduce Tao’s comments about the emotional connection people have with games and their memories of them. The key sentence was: “We understand those emotions; we want to consider that.” The available reporting does not show Ken Kutaragi making that statement. Kutaragi remains important to PlayStation history, but the current policy acknowledgment belongs to Tao.
Why players do not want to give up physical games
Physical media offers forms of control that a download does not necessarily provide in the same way. The concerns appearing in player discussions are practical as well as emotional.

Ownership, resale and lending
A disc is a tangible item that can sit on a shelf, be lent to another person or sold after it is finished, subject to the usual regional and account requirements of the game. Players worry that a digital purchase is more tightly controlled by the platform account and its licensing rules. Sony’s announcement does not change those license terms or define digital purchases as transferable property.
Preservation and offline access
Collectors and preservation-minded players want a copy that remains identifiable and usable even if a storefront changes, a listing disappears or an account has a problem. A disc may contain substantial game data, although modern games can still require updates, installations or online services. Digital buyers value immediate access, but they remain dependent on the platform’s account, download and service policies.
Trust and consumer choice
Players also object to being forced into one format. In a Windows Central poll published July 4, 2026, 1,577 respondents were asked how they felt about physical games disappearing. Seventy-one percent said they would miss buying physical games, 16% wanted more options, and 13% were happy to embrace a fully digital future. That is a publication poll, not a representative industry survey, but its comments repeatedly mentioned ownership, preservation, resale, lending, collecting and trust in platform holders.

Many commenters were not rejecting digital purchases. Their recurring request was coexistence: an optional external disc drive, multiple console configurations or another way to keep existing collections while using digital convenience for new releases.
What boxed PlayStation games may look like after 2028
Retailers can still sell digital games
Sony’s wording leaves room for retailers to continue selling new games. A retail package could contain a redemption code rather than a disc, with the game added to the buyer’s PlayStation account. That would preserve a physical purchase moment and packaging while changing what is inside the box.
Code-in-a-box is possible, not guaranteed
GameSpot reported that Sony has suggested code-in-a-box releases could remain possible, citing GTA 6 as an example. The available statements do not establish one universal packaging standard after January 2028. A future box might contain a code, a disc for an older release, or another digital-delivery format, depending on the game, publisher and region. Buyers should read the package description rather than assume that every boxed edition contains playable media.

Pre-2028 discs remain the unaffected category
New and used stock of games released in disc format before January 2028 can continue to circulate while retailers have inventory. Sony’s policy specifically protects games already released, or due to release before the cutoff, in disc format. Availability and prices will depend on stock, editions and the secondary market.

Do I own a digital PlayStation game?
You receive access under the PlayStation Network account and license terms that apply to the purchase. The 2028 announcement changes disc manufacturing, not those legal terms, so it should not be read as a new ownership guarantee or a transfer right.
Will PS5 discs still work after 2028?
Sony says the transition has no impact on games already released, or releasing before January 2028, in disc format. No announced 2028 cutoff disables those discs. Continued access can still depend on the console, required patches and online services for a particular game.

Some may use download codes, and Sony has indicated that code-in-a-box releases are possible. There is no confirmed rule that every post-2028 box will contain a disc—or that every region will use the same packaging.
