Sony has withdrawn the Android 17 upgrade promised for its Xperia 10 VI smartphone. In a Sony UK support notice modified October 15, 2026, the company says storage-configuration limitations prevent it from delivering an Android 17 experience it considers adequate.
The Xperia 10 VI will instead finish its major-version journey on Android 16. Sony says the reversal is specific to this model and does not affect other Xperia phones.

What Sony changed
When Sony launched the Xperia 10 VI in 2024 with Android 14, it announced three Android operating-system upgrades. That commitment implied upgrades to Android 15, Android 16 and Android 17.

Why Android 17 was canceled
Sony attributes the decision to “limitations related to the device’s storage configuration.” The company says its technical assessment found that it could not provide an Android 17 upgrade experience it considers adequate.
Sony has not identified the exact storage component, a usable-space threshold, a partition involved, or a software workaround. The explanation therefore should not be read as confirmation of a particular capacity defect or as evidence that freeing storage will restore Android 17 eligibility.
In the same notice, Sony acknowledges that the decision falls short of its original announcement and apologizes for the change.

The missing operating-system upgrade does not end security support immediately. Sony says its four-year-from-launch security commitment remains unchanged; the regional support table lists May 1, 2028 as the security-update end date for Xperia 10 VI.
Does this affect other Xperia phones?
Sony says the storage-related issue is specific to Xperia 10 VI and “will not impact other Xperia models.” That is a statement about Sony’s current position, not a guarantee that every future Xperia support schedule will remain unchanged. Owners of other models should continue to rely on the update information Sony publishes for their exact device and region.

What owners should do now
- Check the installed Android version. On the phone, open Settings and look under the system or software-information section to confirm whether Android 16 is available or installed. Menu wording can vary by software build.
- Install available updates. Apply Android 15, Android 16 and security patches offered through Sony’s normal update channel. Keep the phone charged and connected to Wi-Fi during a major update.
- Plan around Android 16. Treat Android 16 as the handset’s final major Android version when evaluating app compatibility, enterprise requirements or a future replacement.
- Track the regional support page. Security availability and dates can be presented by market, so verify the listing for the country in which the phone is registered or used.
What the announcement does not include
Sony’s notice does not announce compensation, a trade-in, a replacement program or a price credit for Xperia 10 VI owners. It also does not provide engineering specifications that would let users modify the storage configuration themselves. Claims that a factory reset, memory-card purchase or deleting apps will qualify the phone for Android 17 are unsupported by Sony’s explanation.
How significant is the change?
The practical impact depends on why you bought the phone. Anyone expecting three full Android upgrades now receives two upgrades after Android 14, while the promised third upgrade is removed. Security support continues on Sony’s stated schedule, so the phone does not become immediately unsafe or unusable when Android 17 launches.

The Xperia 10 VI is now an Android 14-to-16 device, not an Android 14-to-17 device. Sony cites storage-configuration limits, offers no detailed technical workaround, and says other Xperia models are unaffected. Existing owners can continue receiving security updates through May 1, 2028 in the cited regional table, but anyone choosing a phone for long-term Android-version support should account for the canceled upgrade before buying or keeping the model.
