Sony has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR), an AI-upscaling option for the standard PlayStation 5. The first named games are Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, which Sony said were being patched to add it on October 1, 2026. QSSR brings a taste of Sony’s AI-upscaling approach to standard PS5, but Sony has not said it matches PS5 Pro’s PSSR or published performance measurements.
What QSSR does on standard PS5
Quick Spectral Super Resolution is a new Sony AI-upscaling library for the standard PS5. Upscaling reconstructs an output image from the image a game renders; Sony describes its existing PSSR approach as analyzing game images pixel by pixel and using AI to upscale them.

Sony says QSSR uses a streamlined neural-network architecture and an implementation tuned for PS5 performance. It attributes improvements in image detail and stability to the technology. Those are qualitative claims: Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement includes no QSSR benchmark figures or independent image-quality comparisons.
Daniel Craig, Principal Engineer, Graphics R&D at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: “PSSR analyzes game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches; until now, its computational demands made bringing that experience to PS5 impossible.” Sony links QSSR’s development to Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD.

Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei
Sony named Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei as the first games using the QSSR library. It said both were being patched on October 1, 2026, to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.
Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald, Head of Technology, said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry, Lead Rendering Engineer, said it resolves fine detail in characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are developer descriptions, not independent test results.

Future game support
Sony says it will offer QSSR broadly to PlayStation developers. It has not named further supported games or given a schedule for additional patches, so broad availability to developers should not be read as confirmation that a particular future game will include QSSR.
QSSR versus PSSR on PS5 Pro
PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution) is Sony’s AI-upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony calls QSSR a “new performance tier” and says PSSR remains its gold standard on PS5 Pro. The announcement does not claim that QSSR delivers identical image quality, or that software makes a standard PS5 equivalent to PS5 Pro hardware.

| Comparison | QSSR | PSSR |

| Console identified by Sony | Standard PS5 | PS5 Pro |
| Named game support in the cited announcements | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, announced October 1, 2026 | Sony said on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used in over 50 PS5 Pro titles to date |
| How Sony describes it | A streamlined neural network and PS5-tuned implementation; Sony claims improvements in detail and stability | An AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel while upscaling |
| Quantified image-quality or performance comparison with the other technology | Not stated by Sony in its October 1, 2026 announcement | Not stated in the cited Sony announcements |
The “over 50” figure is Sony’s count for PSSR games on PS5 Pro as of February 27, 2026; it is not a QSSR adoption figure. Sony’s September 10, 2024 PS5 Pro announcement also described PSSR as machine-learning-based upscaling and noted that enhanced features vary by game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What players can and cannot conclude
- Confirmed: QSSR is intended for standard PS5, and Sony named two games adding it as an optional graphics feature.
- Claimed, not independently measured: Sony and the two developers describe gains in fine detail and image stability.
- Not established: the effect on frame rate, the games’ rendered or output resolutions, the size of any image-quality gain, or how QSSR compares in measured results with PSSR.
- Not required: Sony presents QSSR as a software capability for PS5 games; its announcement does not identify an accessory players need to use it.
For now, the practical way to try QSSR is to check the updates and graphics options in either named PS5 game. The announcement describes QSSR as an additional option, so its presence should not be treated as a universal system setting or as a feature automatically available in every PS5 title.
