Sony says it is designed to improve image detail and stability, but its announcement gives no benchmark or measured image-quality results.
What QSSR does on PS5
Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, is a graphics library that uses AI upscaling. Sony describes it as a faster evolution of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is available on PS5 Pro. QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD.

Sony says QSSR’s PS5 performance comes from a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation. The company describes the result as improving image detail and stability. Those are Sony’s qualitative claims: its October 1, 2026 announcement reports no resolution, frame-rate, latency, or image-quality measurements. Sony’s announcement also does not provide an independent comparison.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two games at launch. It said both would receive patches on October 1, 2026, adding QSSR as an additional graphics option.

| Game | What Sony announced |
|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | A patch adding QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. |
| Ghost of Yōtei | A patch adding QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5. |
The announcement frames QSSR as a game-level option delivered through patches, not as an operating-system-wide PS5 setting. Sony says it plans to offer the library broadly to PlayStation developers, but it has not named other supported games or given a timetable in this announcement. A broader list should not be assumed from that stated intent.
What Sony says about QSSR versus PSSR
Sony positions QSSR as the AI-upscaling tier for PS5 and says PSSR remains the “gold standard” on PS5 Pro. That describes Sony’s product positioning; the announcement does not establish that QSSR matches PSSR, or quantify any image-quality or performance difference between them.

Insomniac Games’ Head of Technology Mike Fitzgerald said QSSR adds “more pixel-level clarity and stability” to environments in Marvel’s Wolverine. Sucker Punch Productions’ Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry said it resolves fine character and environment details with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are comments from the developers quoted in Sony’s announcement, not independent test results.
What to expect when the option appears
For the two named games, QSSR is an additional graphics option after the relevant patch, rather than a feature that Sony says is enabled through one universal console toggle. The announcement does not specify the option’s exact menu location, the games’ other graphics modes, or how QSSR affects frame rate or resolution. Those details cannot be inferred from the announcement’s claims about clarity and stability.
