Sony announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR) on October 1, 2026, with support beginning in patched versions of Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. QSSR is a new upscaling tier for PS5, not the same feature as PS5 Pro’s PSSR, and Sony has not published comparative image-quality or performance benchmarks.
What is QSSR on PS5?
Quick Spectral Super Resolution is Sony’s AI-guided upscaling technology for the standard PS5. Upscaling helps a game produce an image at a lower internal resolution and reconstruct a sharper-looking output; Sony describes its existing PSSR library as analyzing game images pixel by pixel while upscaling them. Sony says QSSR is designed to bring this kind of image-quality improvement to PS5, where the computational demands of PSSR had previously made a similar experience impossible.

Sony says QSSR grew out of Project Amethyst, its AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Its announced design elements are a streamlined neural network architecture and an implementation hand-tuned to maximize performance on PS5. The announcement does not disclose technical model details or hardware-utilization figures. Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes the approach and rollout.
Which PS5 games support QSSR?
Sony named two initial games. Both were being patched on October 1, 2026, to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5.

| Game | Support Sony announced |
|---|---|
| Marvel’s Wolverine | First named QSSR title; offered as an additional graphics option through a game patch, according to Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement. |
| Ghost of Yōtei | First named QSSR title; offered as an additional graphics option through a game patch, according to Sony’s October 1, 2026 announcement. |
Sony says QSSR will be offered broadly to PlayStation developers, but it has not announced a complete future compatibility list or schedule. Availability is game-specific: having a base PS5 does not mean every game supports QSSR. Check each game’s current patch notes and graphics settings for confirmation.
How does QSSR compare with PS5 Pro’s PSSR?
QSSR and PSSR are related in purpose, but Sony presents them as distinct technologies for different hardware tiers. QSSR is the new performance tier for base PS5; Sony says PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro. Sony has not said QSSR is technically identical to PSSR or that it matches PS5 Pro results.
For context, Sony reported on February 27, 2026, that PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles as of that date. That figure concerns PSSR adoption on PS5 Pro, not QSSR support on base PS5. Sony’s February 27, 2026 PSSR post provides that dated figure and its description of the upscaler.

A meaningful game-by-game comparison would need to account for the supported patch and the graphics options each version exposes, then compare image detail, temporal stability, frame rate, and output resolution. Sony’s announcement does not provide measured QSSR-versus-PSSR results on those points.

Sony says QSSR provides notable improvements to image detail and image stability. Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch Productions also described results in their own titles, but their comments are developer statements about those games, not independent measurements across PS5 titles.
“QSSR adds more pixel-level clarity and stability to our environments, bringing out extra detail amidst the busy streets of Madripoor, the dense alleyways of Shinjuku, and many other areas across Logan’s epic journey.”

“QSSR excels at resolving the fine details in our characters and environments and does so with a level of temporal stability that hasn’t been possible on the PS5 console until now.”

The announcement gives no percentage improvement, output-resolution target, frame-rate gain, or benchmark comparing QSSR with PSSR. Those figures should not be inferred from Sony’s qualitative claims.
Quick Recap
What should players do to use QSSR?
- Install the latest patch for Marvel’s Wolverine or Ghost of Yōtei on PS5.
- Open the game’s graphics or display settings and look for QSSR among the available graphics options. Sony describes it as an additional option, so availability may depend on the game’s own settings.
- If QSSR is not listed, check the game’s current patch notes and settings information; Sony has not published a single console-wide switch or a complete list of future supporting games.
