Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Verdict: Sony’s Bravia Theatre Trio is worth considering at its $2,000 launch price if you want a wide, height-capable cinema system without installing conventional front speakers. Its three-speaker LCR layout gives dialogue a firm screen anchor and produces a larger stage than a typical soundbar. The premium price, app-dependent status information and cost of adding rear speakers and a subwoofer are the main drawbacks.
What the Bravia Theatre Trio is
The Bravia Theatre Trio is a wireless three-piece front stage: a low-profile centre speaker, plus separate left and right speakers. Sony’s design breaks a soundbar into the three channels that matter most for a wide television: centre, front left and front right. The standalone system is rated as 3.0.2, meaning three front channels and two upward-firing height channels, with 405W of claimed amplification.

The centre speaker uses two front-firing woofers and a tweeter. Each side speaker combines a woofer, tweeter and up-firing driver. That arrangement is intended to widen effects across the screen while preserving a stable dialogue position.

| Claimed amplification | 405W |
| Centre speaker | Two front-firing woofers and one tweeter |
| Left/right speakers | One woofer, one tweeter and one up-firing driver per speaker |

| Passthrough input | HDMI input with 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM support |
| Wireless playback | Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect |

The 4K/120Hz HDMI input, variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low-latency mode (ALLM) passthrough make the Trio suitable for a gaming setup when the console is connected through the centre speaker. Your television still needs a compatible HDMI eARC connection for the audio return path.

How Sony’s spatial setup works
360 Spatial Sound Mapping uses the three physical speakers as an anchor and synthesises additional speaker positions around the room. Sony claims up to 24 phantom speakers; that is a processing capability, not 24 separate drivers.
- Place the centre speaker below or in front of the television and position the left and right speakers at the edges of the screen.
- Open the Bravia Connect app and begin Sound Field Optimisation.
- Plug Sony’s supplied USB-C calibration microphone into a phone as directed by the app.
- Allow the built-in microphones in the speakers and the phone-mounted microphone to measure the room and speaker positions.
- Save the calibration so the system can compensate for room acoustics and the actual placement of each speaker.
Compatible Sony BRAVIA televisions add on-screen controls and Voice Zoom 3, a dialogue-enhancement feature. With other televisions, detailed settings and status information are handled through the app.

How it sounds
Soundstage and Atmos height
What Hi-Fi’s 2026 standalone test found that effects extend substantially farther left and right than they do with even strong conventional soundbars. Dolby Atmos material also produced convincing height, while dialogue stayed anchored to the screen. The publication described the Trio as one of the finest lifestyle Dolby Atmos systems it had tested.
Movement and vocal balance
TechRadar’s 2026 hands-on preview heard powerful, warm output and smooth movement from the front toward the sides and rear. In its demonstration configuration, however, vocal separation was more subdued than expected. These are listening impressions from the named publications, not laboratory measurements, so room layout, calibration and content can change the result.

Bass without the Sub 9
The standalone package has no separate subwoofer. It can deliver a substantial front stage, but the deeper extension and controlled low-end impact available from Sony’s optional Sub 9 require an additional purchase and floor space.
Design and everyday usability
The centre speaker is low enough to sit in front of many televisions and includes spacer feet to help accommodate different screen stands. The side speakers have flat backs for wall mounting, giving you more placement options than a single bar when the television stand is narrow.

| Expansion item | What it adds | Published separate price |
|---|---|---|
| Two Rear 9 speakers | Physical rear channels and stronger envelopment; 180W claimed for the rear pair | £699 / $750 / AU$1,299, as listed by What Hi-Fi; package basis is not stated |
| One Sub 9 | Deeper, controlled bass; 600W claimed | £899 / $900 / AU$1,299, as listed by What Hi-Fi |
| Trio plus two Rear 9s and Sub 9 | 5.1.4 configuration; 1,185W claimed total | Bundle discounts vary by country |
In What Hi-Fi’s expanded-system review, the rear speakers made envelopment and front-to-back movement more convincing, while the Sub 9 added deeper, controlled bass. The Sub 9 weighs 23.3kg and measures approximately 39 x 40 x 35cm, so it needs a stable floor position and a nearby mains outlet.
The Trio launched at £1,999 / $2,000 / AU$2,999. The figures above are launch or listed prices reported in 2026 coverage; current stock, regional pricing and bundle offers should be checked before purchase.
Trio versus a soundbar or a full surround system
| Priority | Best match | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One-piece simplicity and minimum footprint | Conventional soundbar | Fewer physical components and simpler placement, usually with less separation between left, centre and right channels |
| Wide front stage with dialogue locked to the screen | Bravia Theatre Trio | Dedicated centre, left and right speakers plus up-firing drivers |
| Physical rear envelopment and deeper bass | Trio with two Rear 9s and Sub 9 | Creates the reviewed 5.1.4 configuration, but costs more and occupies more room |
| Small room or strict budget | Single bar or smaller surround package | The Trio’s premium launch price and separate expansion components may not fit the space or budget |
Review coverage also names Sony’s Bravia Theatre Quad and Bravia Theatre Bar 9, Sonos Arc Ultra and Ultimate Immersive Set, and Samsung’s HW-Q990H as alternatives to investigate. The useful comparison points are soundstage width and height, dialogue anchoring, bass extension, placement flexibility, physical footprint, HDMI gaming support and the eventual cost of adding rear channels.
Who should buy it?
- Choose the Trio if you have a large screen, value clear screen-centred dialogue, want convincing Atmos height and prefer separate front speakers to a single bar.
- Buy the Rear 9s later if front-stage quality is your immediate priority and you have room for rear-channel stands or wall positions.
- Add the Sub 9 only if you want deeper cinematic bass and can accommodate a 23.3kg floor-standing component.
- Look elsewhere if you need a low-cost, one-box solution, a front display, or a system that does not depend on an app for detailed setup and status.
Bottom line
The Sony Bravia Theatre Trio is an unusually capable middle ground between a single soundbar and a traditional surround installation. Its dedicated LCR layout, up-firing drivers and room calibration deliver the width, dialogue focus and height effects that justify the premium for the right room. At $2,000, it is not a value pick; it is a space-conscious front stage that becomes a more complete cinema system only after the optional Rear 9 and Sub 9 costs, space and installation requirements are accepted.
