Choose the Sony BRAVIA 9 II if your priorities are the brightest measured HDR image, Dolby Vision, Sony’s picture processing, or a screen up to 115 inches. Choose a Samsung Neo QLED only after identifying the exact model: the range includes different brightness levels, ports, HDR support, sizes and prices. A model such as the tested Samsung R95H can be the better fit when you need four HDMI 2.1 inputs, while a lower-tier or differently configured Neo QLED may not offer the same advantages.
The short answer: Sony wins on HDR performance, but “Neo QLED” is not one television
The Sony BRAVIA 9 II is a specific 2026 flagship television. Samsung Neo QLED is a family name covering multiple Mini LED models, from different tiers and in different markets. That distinction matters more than the logos on the bezel. You can make a direct Sony-versus-Samsung decision only after writing down the exact Samsung model number, screen size and country of sale.

For the clearest available performance comparison, TechRadar measured a BRAVIA 9 II against Samsung’s R95H. The Sony reached 4,414 nits of peak HDR brightness and 974 nits in a fullscreen HDR test. The R95H measured 1,977 nits peak and 612 nits fullscreen. Those are measurements of the reviewed samples and picture modes, not a guarantee for every Neo QLED television.

That gives Sony the stronger case for bright-room viewing, high-impact HDR highlights and viewers who want Dolby Vision. Samsung’s strongest argument is configuration flexibility: the tested R95H was reported with four HDMI 2.1 ports, compared with two on the BRAVIA 9 II. If you connect several high-frame-rate sources, that difference can be more important than a brightness chart.

There is no universal “best Neo QLED.” A 100-inch-class Samsung QN80H announced for 2026, for example, is a different proposition from a 65-inch R95H. Treat every Samsung model as its own product.
What each television actually is
Sony BRAVIA 9 II
BRAVIA 9 II is Sony’s 2026 flagship True RGB Mini LED television. Sony lists 65-, 75-, 85- and 115-inch classes in its launch material. The 65-inch model number is K65XR90M2. It uses Google TV, a native 120Hz panel and HDMI 2.1 features including 4K/120, variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low-latency mode (ALLM).
Sony describes its RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro as driving each LED with high precision to improve brightness, reduce blooming and produce purer color than conventional Mini LED displays. In practical terms, the backlight is designed to control small bright areas more independently while maintaining the color volume expected from a flagship HDR set. A What Hi-Fi? report lists 1,530 dimming zones for the 65-inch BRAVIA 9 II. Zone counts are useful context, but they do not replace measurements of brightness, contrast or blooming on the finished television.
Samsung Neo QLED
Neo QLED is Samsung’s name for a range of Mini LED televisions. Samsung’s 2026 announcement confirms refreshed Neo QLED 4K models, including the 100-inch-class QN80H at an announced $5,499.99. The announcement also emphasizes Mini LED HDR and Vision AI.
Because the range spans model tiers, Samsung can change the number of HDMI 2.1 ports, the panel’s brightness, supported HDR formats, processing features, screen sizes and regional pricing from one model to another. Do not use the specifications of the R95H to describe every Neo QLED, and do not use the QN80H’s price as a 65-inch comparison.
HDR brightness: the most measurable difference
Peak HDR brightness
Peak brightness describes how bright a small highlight can become, such as a sun glint, explosion or reflected lamp in an HDR scene. In TechRadar’s 2026 side-by-side measurement, the BRAVIA 9 II reached 4,414 nits, while the Samsung R95H reached 1,977 nits. The Sony therefore had substantially more measured headroom for small HDR highlights in that comparison.

A peak result is not the same as the brightness of the entire screen. It is normally obtained from a limited highlight window, and it can be affected by the selected picture mode, test pattern and sample variation. Use the number to understand the reviewed set’s capability, not to promise that every BRAVIA 9 II or Neo QLED will produce the same result in your room.
Fullscreen HDR brightness
Fullscreen brightness is more relevant to scenes dominated by snow, daylight, a stadium or another large bright area. The same TechRadar test measured 974 nits fullscreen on BRAVIA 9 II and 612 nits on Samsung R95H. Sony still led, but the gap was smaller than in the peak-highlight measurement.
If you watch during the day with windows or lamps facing the screen, fullscreen output can affect perceived punch more often than a brief specular highlight. If you watch films in a dark room, peak control, shadow detail and how the television handles blooming may matter more. The available measurements establish Sony’s advantage in this test; they do not establish that every Samsung model is dimmer.
Blooming and local dimming
Mini LED televisions use many small backlight LEDs behind an LCD layer. Local dimming groups those LEDs into zones, lowering the backlight behind dark parts of an image while raising it behind bright objects. More control can reduce halos around subtitles or stars, but zone count alone cannot predict the result. Algorithms, panel characteristics and the size and shape of objects on screen all affect what you see.
The BRAVIA 9 II’s reported 1,530 dimming zones on the 65-inch model and Sony’s RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro are relevant to its design. They should be read alongside the measured HDR results rather than treated as a guarantee of zero blooming. A Samsung Neo QLED may use a different zone count and processing approach, so request the exact model’s specification before buying.

Dolby Vision
Sony documents Dolby Vision support on BRAVIA 9 II. Dolby Vision content carries scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame guidance that compatible televisions can use to map HDR highlights and shadows to their own capabilities. Whether the difference is visible depends on the source, the app, the mastering and the television’s processing.

Samsung’s 2026 Neo QLED announcement highlights Mini LED HDR and Vision AI, but the available material does not establish one HDR-format list for the entire Neo QLED family. Check the specification page for the exact Samsung model and the apps or external player you plan to use. Do not assume that a model supports Dolby Vision simply because it is a premium Mini LED television.
Processing and color
Sony positions BRAVIA 9 II’s processing and RGB backlight control as part of its flagship picture system. That can matter with compressed streaming, upscaled HD broadcasts and mixed-quality sources, where edge handling, gradation and motion decisions are as important as raw brightness.
Samsung’s Vision AI branding indicates that processing is a major part of its Neo QLED proposition, but the behavior and feature set can vary by model. Compare demonstrations using the same source and picture mode rather than relying on the family name or a showroom loop.
Gaming: count the ports before you count the frames
Sony’s gaming specification
BRAVIA 9 II has four HDMI inputs, with two HDMI 2.1 ports according to Sony specifications and independent reporting. Those ports support 4K/120, VRR and ALLM. A PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or compatible gaming PC can use those features when the console, cable, game and display settings all support them.
Samsung R95H’s port advantage
TechRadar reports four HDMI 2.1 ports on the Samsung R95H. That is useful if you have several consoles, a high-end gaming PC and another 4K/120 source, because more devices can remain connected without swapping cables or adding an HDMI switch.
The R95H result cannot be applied to every Neo QLED. Port counts are model-specific, so look for the exact number of HDMI 2.1 inputs in the manufacturer’s specification. A television may have four HDMI sockets but only some may support the bandwidth and gaming features you need.

How many HDMI 2.1 ports do you need?
- One high-frame-rate source: one HDMI 2.1 input is sufficient, provided your sound system and other devices do not need another compatible connection.
- Two consoles: two HDMI 2.1 inputs let you keep a PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X connected at the same time.
- Two consoles plus a gaming PC: three compatible inputs avoid routine cable swapping. Four gives additional headroom for another source.
- Soundbar or receiver in the chain: check the television’s port assignment and the audio device’s passthrough capability before assuming every source can retain 4K/120 and VRR.
For a two-console setup, BRAVIA 9 II’s two HDMI 2.1 ports can be enough. For three or four high-bandwidth sources, an exact Samsung model with four HDMI 2.1 ports, such as the configuration reported for R95H, is more convenient.

Screen sizes and room fit
When Sony’s 115-inch class matters
Sony explicitly lists a 115-inch class BRAVIA 9 II. That size is aimed at a large dedicated room where viewing distance, wall width and installation access can accommodate a very large display. It also makes the Sony range easier to consider when you want one family’s processing and HDR behavior across 65-, 75-, 85- and 115-inch classes.
Samsung sizing is model- and market-dependent
Samsung’s announced QN80H example is 100-inch class, but the sizes available for other Neo QLED models depend on the model and country. A Samsung television that is easy to find in one market may not be sold in another, and a similarly named regional version may have different ports or features.
Measure the wall, stand and delivery route before ordering either brand. For a close viewing distance, a larger screen can reveal compression, low-resolution sources and motion artifacts more clearly; for a bright open-plan room, window placement and reflections may influence satisfaction more than a modest size difference.

| Television or family | Screen and price information | What is established | What you still must verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sony BRAVIA 9 II, K65XR90M2 | 65-inch; $3,599 listed by Tom’s Guide in 2026 | Specific 2026 flagship model; Google TV; Dolby Vision; native 120Hz; four HDMI inputs, two HDMI 2.1 | Current retailer price, delivery and installation costs in your region |

The fair value question is therefore not “Is Sony more expensive than Samsung?” It is “Which exact screen size and feature set am I comparing?” Compare the same diagonal, warranty, delivery terms and port requirements. If you are choosing between Sony’s 65-inch model and Samsung’s 100-inch QN80H, you are primarily deciding between flagship image features and a much larger display, not between equivalent products.
Which one should you buy?
Buy BRAVIA 9 II when HDR impact is the priority
- You want the highest measured HDR brightness in the available head-to-head test.
- You specifically need Dolby Vision support.
- You value Sony’s picture-processing approach and Google TV.
- You want a 115-inch-class option or a consistent 65-, 75- or 85-inch family.
- You have no more than two HDMI 2.1 sources that must stay connected.
The BRAVIA 9 II is the straightforward recommendation for a viewer who wants a bright, high-end HDR presentation and accepts that only two of its four HDMI inputs are HDMI 2.1.
Choose a Samsung Neo QLED when connectivity or model-specific value wins
- The exact Samsung model provides four HDMI 2.1 ports and you need several high-bandwidth sources.
- A Samsung model in your market offers the screen size or promotion that fits your room and budget better.
- You prefer Samsung’s smart-platform and processing features after checking the specific model.
- You are considering a very large screen such as the announced 100-inch-class QN80H.
Do not make this choice from the words “Neo QLED” alone. Record the model number, then verify its HDMI 2.1 count, HDR formats, size, brightness claims and local price.

- Write down the exact model: use K65XR90M2 for the 65-inch BRAVIA 9 II, or the complete Samsung model code rather than “Neo QLED.”
- Match the screen size: compare 65-inch with 65-inch, 75-inch with 75-inch and so on. Treat 100-inch and 115-inch options as a separate large-screen decision.
- Count HDMI 2.1 devices: include consoles, a gaming PC and any source that needs 4K/120 or VRR.
- Confirm HDR formats: Sony documents Dolby Vision; check the precise Samsung specification instead of assuming family-wide support.
- Check brightness evidence: distinguish peak from fullscreen figures and remember that the cited numbers are measurements of particular samples and modes.
- Verify regional details: confirm stock, warranty, stand dimensions, delivery access and the price in your country.
- Set the room expectation: account for reflections, seating distance and whether the screen will be used mainly for films, sports, games or mixed streaming.
Common mistakes to avoid
Comparing a family name with a model number
“Samsung Neo QLED” does not identify one panel or one feature list. A comparison that says Sony versus Neo QLED without naming the Samsung model cannot establish a definitive winner on price, ports or HDR support.
Treating peak brightness as all-day brightness
A 4,414-nit peak result for BRAVIA 9 II does not mean the whole screen stays at 4,414 nits. The relevant fullscreen result in the same test was 974 nits. Use both figures and consider the type of content you watch.
Assuming every HDMI socket is HDMI 2.1
BRAVIA 9 II has four HDMI inputs but two HDMI 2.1 ports. The reported R95H configuration has four HDMI 2.1 ports. Verify the exact labeling and supported features before installing several consoles.
Using a different-size price as proof of better value
Sony’s listed $3,599 price is for its 65-inch BRAVIA 9 II. Samsung’s announced $5,499.99 price is for a 100-inch-class QN80H. The numbers answer different buying questions until screen size and model tier are matched.
Verdict
For the most consistently supportable recommendation, buy Sony BRAVIA 9 II when you want flagship HDR brightness, Dolby Vision, Sony processing or a 115-inch-class screen. Its 2026 identity is clear: True RGB Mini LED, Google TV, native 120Hz and two HDMI 2.1 ports within four total HDMI inputs.
Buy Samsung only after narrowing the range to a model that meets your requirements. The tested R95H demonstrates why Samsung can be preferable for gaming-heavy setups: four HDMI 2.1 ports and a different feature balance. Other Neo QLED models may differ substantially, so the model number—not the family label—determines whether the Samsung is the better purchase.
