Sony Bravia 9 II vs Bravia 7 II: Which True RGB TV Is the Better Buy?

For most shoppers, the Sony BRAVIA 7 II is the better buy; the BRAVIA 9 II is the better fit if you need brighter HDR highlights or a screen designed to handle direct glare. That is Tom’s Guide’s conclusion from its September 25, 2026 comparison—not a test conducted for this article. The right choice also depends on screen size and room lighting.

How the BRAVIA 9 II and 7 II differ

Both models use Sony’s True RGB backlight approach. What Hi-Fi? describes the BRAVIA 9 II’s system as independently controlled red, green, and blue Mini LEDs that generate color directly, rather than a white backlight shining through a color filter. Sony says the BRAVIA 9 II uses RGB Triluminos Max and Luminance Booster Pro, and describes its new LED controllers as providing “the highest level of backlight control.” The color-volume and gradation benefits are manufacturer claims, not proof that either TV will look better in every scene or room.

The practical distinction in Tom’s Guide’s comparison is that the 9 II delivered substantially brighter HDR highlights and has a matte-style screen finish, while the 7 II costs less and comes in smaller sizes. The two sets were measured in Sony Professional picture mode.

Picture performance: HDR favors the 9 II

Tom’s Guide measured 3,903 nits for the BRAVIA 9 II and 2,077 nits for the BRAVIA 7 II on a 10% HDR window. On a 10% white SDR window, the same test reported 101 and 100 nits, respectively. These are results from that publication’s test conditions, not a promise of full-screen brightness or what every viewer will see with different settings and content.

The HDR result makes the 9 II the stronger choice if your priority is bright highlights in HDR movies or shows. It does not establish that the flagship is twice as good overall: the SDR window readings were nearly identical, and window measurements do not describe every part of picture quality. Tom’s Guide scored the 9 II 93/100 and the 7 II 91/100, but still recommended the 7 II to most buyers.

Which screen fits your room?

Choose the BRAVIA 9 II for direct glare

Tom’s Guide describes the 9 II’s screen as matte-style and says the 7 II lacks that finish. That gives the flagship an advantage when windows or intense light create direct reflections on the screen. It is a reason to consider the 9 II if glare is a persistent problem; it does not mean the TV eliminates all reflections.

Choose the BRAVIA 7 II for smaller rooms

The 7 II line includes 50- and 55-inch options that the 9 II line does not, according to Tom’s Guide’s comparison. Sony announced the 7 II in 50- to 98-inch classes and the 9 II in a 115-inch class. Regional availability can differ, so confirm the exact size and model offered where you live before buying.

Choose the BRAVIA 9 II for the largest screen

If you want the biggest option in these two ranges, Sony announced a 115-inch-class BRAVIA 9 II; the 7 II range tops out at 98-inch class. Sony’s US page identifies the 115-inch 9 II as model K115XR90M2. The size class and model availability are more useful comparisons than assuming every region stocks every screen size.

Price and value: the 7 II is the safer pick for most

When Tom’s Guide published its comparison on September 25, 2026, it listed 65-inch prices of $3,599 for the BRAVIA 9 II and $1,999 for the BRAVIA 7 II at Best Buy. Those are publication-snapshot prices, not guaranteed current prices; check the retailer listing for the screen size you want. Tom’s Guide characterized the 7 II as delivering much of the 9 II experience for about half the price and recommended it to most Sony True RGB shoppers.

The flagship premium buys specific advantages: higher measured HDR-window brightness, a matte-style finish, and access to a 115-inch-class option. If those are not priorities, Tom’s Guide’s comparison supports choosing the less expensive 7 II rather than paying extra for the 9 II’s top-end performance.

What the test results do—and do not—tell you

Tom’s Guide’s September 2026 comparison is the source for the direct brightness measurements, scores, screen-finish description, and recommendation. TechRadar’s August 30, 2026 BRAVIA 7 II review describes side-by-side testing against the LG C6 and Samsung R95H using calibration and color-measurement equipment, but it is a review of the 7 II rather than a matching head-to-head test of both Sony models. What Hi-Fi?’s July 10, 2026 BRAVIA 9 II review reports 1,530 local dimming zones on its 65-inch review sample; that figure applies to that size and sample.

These sources do not establish that True RGB is categorically superior in every scene or that the 9 II’s premium is worthwhile for every buyer. Use the measured HDR result alongside your room’s lighting, desired size, and the current price for that exact model.
