The Sony Bravia 9 II is the most ambitious Mini LED television Sony has made. Its independently controlled red, green and blue LEDs deliver exceptional brightness and color volume, making it a particularly strong choice for sunlit rooms, very large screens and viewers who do not want an OLED panel. Independent 2026 testing measured 3,903 nits in a 10% HDR window, while What Hi-Fi? called it the best picture it had seen from a backlit TV.
It is not a universal OLED replacement. OLED still has pixel-level light control, stronger dark-room depth, better off-angle consistency and a slimmer design. The Bravia 9 II wins when sustained brightness, anti-reflection performance or an 85- or 115-inch screen matters more than perfect blacks from every seat.

What makes the Bravia 9 II different
Sony announced the Bravia 9 II on May 27, 2026, as its flagship True RGB television. Its RGB Backlight Master Drive Pro uses separate red, green and blue LEDs in each local-dimming zone. The system controls those colors independently instead of using the white/blue LED and quantum-dot arrangement common in conventional Mini LED sets.
That architecture is intended to raise brightness, color volume and color accuracy at the same time. In practical terms, the television can keep saturated colors vivid as highlights become brighter, rather than washing out color when the backlight is pushed hard. It remains a 4K HDR Google TV with Gemini, supporting HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision.

Measured performance: unusually bright for a home TV
Tom’s Guide measured the 65-inch model in 2026. These are laboratory-style review measurements, not Sony’s rated specifications.
| Measurement | Result | Context |
|---|---|---|
| HDR brightness | 3,903 nits | 10% HDR test window, Tom’s Guide, 2026 |
| UHDA-P3 gamut coverage | 99.18% | Tom’s Guide measurement, 2026 |
| Input lag | 9.8 ms | Tom’s Guide measurement, 2026 |
| Local-dimming zones | 1,530 | 65-inch test model listed by What Hi-Fi? |
| Chassis thickness | 1.75 inches | 65-inch model measured by Tom’s Guide |
| Chassis weight | 58.6 pounds | 65-inch model measured by Tom’s Guide |
The 3,903-nit result applies to a 10% window, so it should not be interpreted as the brightness of the entire screen at once. Even with that qualification, the output gives HDR highlights considerable impact and leaves more headroom for daytime viewing than most OLED televisions. The 99.18% P3 result indicates very broad coverage of the color gamut used for modern HDR films and games.
How it looks in difficult scenes
Tom’s Guide reported controlled shadows, vivid color, smooth gradations and near-zero blooming in challenging scenes. Its strong anti-reflective coating and high light output also made it well suited to bright rooms. What Hi-Fi? described the overall result as the best picture it had seen from a backlit television.

RGB control is most useful when a scene combines bright, saturated objects with darker surroundings. The Bravia 9 II can maintain intense reds, greens and blues without relying on a single white backlight to create all brightness. That does not give each pixel the independent control of OLED, but it narrows the visual gap in many mixed-brightness scenes.
Bravia 9 II versus OLED
| Priority | Bravia 9 II | OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Peak and full-screen brightness | Clear advantage for bright HDR highlights and sustained brightness in sunlit rooms, based on the 2026 reviews. | Generally less suited to very bright full-screen scenes; no comparable measurement is supplied here. |
| Black level and blooming | Very strong local dimming with near-zero blooming reported, but it is still zone-based rather than pixel-based. | Pixel-level control gives the cleanest black backgrounds and isolated highlights. |
| Color volume | Independent RGB LEDs are designed to preserve saturated color at high brightness; P3 coverage measured 99.18%. | Excellent color, but no directly comparable gamut measurement is supplied here. |
| Viewing angles | Slight off-angle contrast loss was observed by Tom’s Guide. | More consistent contrast across wide seating angles, according to What Hi-Fi? |
| Dark-room depth | Very good shadow control, with some residual LCD limitations. | More solid three-dimensional depth and stronger isolated highlights against black. |
| Large-screen choice | Available in 65, 75, 85 and 115 inches. | OLED availability depends on model and market; the Bravia 9 II’s 115-inch option is a distinctive advantage. |
| Thickness | 65-inch chassis measured 1.75 inches thick. | OLED sets are typically slimmer, although thickness varies by model. |
What Hi-Fi? concluded that OLED remains the more complete choice for most viewers because of its pixel-level precision, dark-room dimensionality and viewing-angle consistency. Its 2026 buying guide nevertheless identifies the Bravia 9 II as the RGB Mini LED TV to beat for bright rooms, genuinely huge screens or buyers who prefer to avoid OLED.

Gaming and connections
Sony documents 4K at 120 frames per second, variable refresh rate (VRR) and auto low-latency mode (ALLM) through HDMI 2.1. What Hi-Fi? specifies four HDMI inputs, with two supporting 48Gbps HDMI 2.1. The set also includes Dolby Vision Game mode, eARC and an optical audio output.
The measured 9.8 ms input lag is suitable for responsive console and PC play. Two full-bandwidth HDMI 2.1 ports are enough for a single console plus a gaming PC or soundbar arrangement, but households with several current-generation consoles may need an HDMI switch or an AV receiver. Use certified 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 cables for 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM signals.

Which Bravia 9 II should you buy?
Choose 65 inches for a conventional living room
The 65-inch model offers the complete feature set and the available independent measurements without the installation demands of the larger versions. Its $3,599.99 US launch price places it firmly in the premium category.
Choose 75 or 85 inches for bright, dedicated viewing
The 75-inch model costs $4,599.99 at launch, while the 85-inch model costs $6,499.99. The 85-inch screen makes the most sense when seating distance and wall space can support it and you specifically want LCD brightness at a cinema-like scale.
Treat 115 inches as a custom-install purchase
At $30,999.99 MSRP, the 115-inch K115XR90M2 is aimed at buyers building a luxury theater or statement living-room display. Its price is not justified by value-per-inch alone; the appeal is combining extreme size with high-brightness RGB Mini LED performance.
Who should buy it
- Viewers whose rooms receive substantial daylight or who want strong HDR impact without darkening the room.
- Buyers seeking an 85-inch or 115-inch television with sustained LCD brightness.
- People who want saturated, accurate HDR color but prefer a non-OLED display.
- Gamers who can work within the set’s two HDMI 2.1 inputs and want 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM.
Who should choose OLED instead
- Dark-room movie viewers who prioritize pixel-level blacks and the strongest three-dimensional contrast.
- Households where people watch from wide, off-center seating positions.
- Anyone who wants the thinnest possible panel or needs more than two HDMI 2.1 sources without additional hardware.
Important evidence limits
No long-term burn-in study or multi-week ownership test is provided for the Bravia 9 II. The available evidence supports picture-quality, brightness and connectivity conclusions, but it does not establish lifetime reliability, burn-in immunity or long-term firmware behavior. Prices, stock and Google TV software features should be checked again at the time of purchase.
Verdict
The Bravia 9 II is the most convincing argument yet for RGB Mini LED. Its measured 3,903-nit HDR peak, near-complete P3 coverage, strong anti-reflection performance and unusually clean local dimming make it the premium choice for bright rooms and very large screens. OLED still wins the overall technical contest for pixel precision, dark-room depth and wide-angle consistency, but buyers who value brightness, size or an OLED alternative should put the Bravia 9 II at the top of their shortlist.
