Sony Bank has cleared an important U.S. regulatory step, but it does not yet have permission to issue a live PlayStation stablecoin. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) gave conditional approval to Sony’s proposed national trust-bank subsidiary, Connectia Trust, National Association. Final OCC approval and other authorizations are still required.
Sony has described a U.S.-dollar-denominated stablecoin as a possible payment method for PlayStation users and other Sony businesses. No launch date, token ticker, blockchain or consumer product has been confirmed.

What Sony Bank filed and what the OCC approved
Sony Bank applied to establish a U.S. national trust-bank subsidiary named Connectia Trust, National Association. Sony Financial Group’s July 6, 2026 announcement said the application had received conditional approval from the OCC.
That status is not the same as a final charter or authorization to operate. Sony’s announcement expressly says that Connectia cannot conduct business—including issuing stablecoins—until all required approvals and authorizations, including the OCC’s final approval, have been obtained.

Connectia’s proposed structure
| Item | What Sony has disclosed |
|---|---|
| Entity | Connectia Trust, National Association |
| Owner | Sony Bank, with 100% ownership |
| Charter | U.S. national trust-bank subsidiary |
| Stated capital | USD 40 million, according to Sony Financial Group’s 2026 announcement |
| Planned establishment | July 2026, subject to the required approvals and authorizations |
| Proposed business | Issuing and managing U.S.-dollar-denominated stablecoins |
| Current status | Conditional OCC approval; final approval pending |
Sony reported that the expected effect on its consolidated results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027 was immaterial. That indicates a regulatory and preparation project rather than a material operating business at this stage.
How PlayStation fits into the plan
Sony Financial Group’s 2025 Investor Day Q&A said the company was considering using a Banking-as-a-Service function across Sony Group companies and issuing stablecoins for uses “such as a means of payment for PlayStation users.” The company also discussed working with Sony businesses that have overseas customer bases through a U.S. trust subsidiary.

PlayStation is therefore a stated use case, not a confirmed restriction on the token. Sony’s disclosures support a broader Sony ecosystem strategy that could include digital content and other group businesses. They do not promise that every PlayStation purchase will accept the stablecoin, nor do they establish that the token would be available in every country where PlayStation operates.

When could the stablecoin launch?
Sony has not announced a launch date. A July 9, 2026 report by The Block said a 2027 launch was possible if the remaining approvals were secured, but Sony did not commit to that timetable.

The practical sequence is:
- Connectia must satisfy the conditions attached to the OCC’s approval.
- The OCC must issue its final approval, and Sony must obtain any other required authorizations.
- Connectia would then need to establish the operational controls, technology and compliance processes for issuance and management.
- Only after those steps could Sony begin issuing a token, if it proceeds with the plan.
Until then, there is no officially launched Sony or PlayStation stablecoin for customers to buy, hold or use.
Why the GENIUS Act matters
The regulatory backdrop is the U.S. GENIUS Act, enacted on July 18, 2025. The OCC’s Bulletin 2026-3, published February 25, 2026, proposed rules covering payment-stablecoin activities such as reserve assets, redemption, risk management, audits, reporting, custody, applications, examinations and capital or operational backstops.

The framework generally prohibits issuing a U.S. payment stablecoin unless the issuer is a permitted issuer. A trust-bank charter can provide a path into that regulated system, but conditional charter approval alone does not make a token a permitted, circulating payment stablecoin. Reserve safeguards, redemption arrangements, reporting and supervisory requirements would still apply.
What Sony has not disclosed
Neither Sony’s official announcements nor the cited regulatory materials establish the product specifications users would need before treating this as a finished payment service. The following details remain open:
Best Value
- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- A token name or ticker symbol
- The blockchain or blockchains that would carry the token
- The exact composition and custody of its dollar reserves
- How and when holders could redeem tokens for U.S. dollars
- Customer or merchant fees
- Supported countries and eligibility rules
- Which Sony services would accept it at launch
- Consumer-protection terms and recovery procedures for lost or compromised accounts
Those omissions are significant. A stablecoin’s usefulness depends not only on its branding, but also on who can mint and redeem it, where it can be used, how reserves are managed and which networks can process transactions.
What this means for PlayStation users now
There is no announced wallet, checkout option, subscription feature or PlayStation hardware integration associated with the proposal. Users do not need to transfer funds or sign up for anything, and Sony has not announced a public testing program.
The confirmed development is the creation of a regulated U.S. subsidiary intended to support future stablecoin activity. Whether that activity becomes a PlayStation payment product, a broader Sony payment rail, or both will depend on final approvals and later product decisions.

The bottom line
Sony Bank’s U.S. charter effort has advanced to conditional OCC approval through Connectia Trust, but the planned stablecoin remains a future project. Sony has identified PlayStation payments as one possible use for a dollar-denominated token, while leaving the launch date, technology, reserves, redemption terms and supported services undecided. A live PlayStation stablecoin cannot begin operating until final regulatory approval and the other required authorizations are complete.
