Sony’s new Midnight Black PS5 is a Japan-market, Japanese-language-only PlayStation 5 Digital Edition—not a black cover for an existing console. Model CFI-2200B02S costs ¥55,000 including tax and launches in Japan on November 19, 2026. Sony says it can be used only in Japan with the console language set to Japanese and a PlayStation account set to Japan, so buyers elsewhere should not assume they can use it as a locally supported import.
Price and release date
The Midnight Black Digital Edition has a suggested retail price of ¥55,000 including tax in Japan. Sony says reservations are scheduled to begin October 20, 2026, through PlayStation retailers and e-commerce sites in Japan; the console’s release date is November 19, 2026. Those are Sony’s announced dates, not confirmation that a particular retailer has opened reservations or has stock.

The price is consistent with Sony’s March 2026 Japan price update, which kept the Japanese-language-only Digital Edition at ¥55,000. For context, Sony listed the regular Japanese PS5 at ¥97,980 and the regular PS5 Digital Edition at ¥89,980, tax included, effective April 2, 2026. These are different market models, and the comparison does not establish that the black console is a globally available price cut or a like-for-like substitute in every respect.
Can you use the Japanese black PS5 outside Japan?
Sony describes the console as limited to use in Japan. It requires the system language to be Japanese and a PlayStation account whose country or region is Japan. That restriction is central to the purchase decision: an overseas buyer should not treat this announcement as a general international release or assume that changing the console’s color is the only difference from a locally sold PS5.

Sony has not announced availability outside Japan in this product announcement. It also does not establish how a particular import would be supported in another country, so buyers should check the applicable account, service, warranty, and retailer terms before considering one.
What the Midnight Black model includes
CFI-2200B02S is a digital-only PS5 with an 825GB SSD. The stated capacity includes storage used by system software, leaving less space available to the user. Sony says the model retains the PS5’s high-speed SSD, 3D audio, PS4 backward compatibility, and DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.

The console does not include a disc drive. Sony notes that some PS4 games may not be compatible; downloaded games require internet access and a PlayStation account, and software updates may be needed.

Can it play disc games?
Not as sold: there is no disc drive in the box. Sony has announced a matching Midnight Black Disc Drive, model CFI-ZDD1J01, for ¥11,980 including tax, also scheduled for November 19, 2026. The drive attaches to the console and enables it to play packaged games. Pairing the drive with the console requires an internet connection, and its price is additional to the console’s ¥55,000 price.

Adding the announced drive brings the two listed prices to ¥66,980 including tax in Japan, before any retailer-specific costs. Buyers who want physical games should consider that total and the Japan-only language and account requirements before choosing this model.

This is a complete black console, not merely a replacement cover. Sony previously announced Midnight Black covers for the slim PS5. Its January 2024 Japanese notice identifies cover model CFI-ZCS2G01 for the CFI-2000 slim model group and says it does not fit the older CFI-1000 group. That compatibility information does not confirm that the older cover fits the new CFI-2200B02S console; Sony has not established that fit in the announcement.

What to check before buying
- Location and account: The model is limited to Japan and requires Japanese system language and a Japan-region PlayStation account.
- Game format: Digital games are the default. The separately sold drive adds disc playback at an announced ¥11,980 including tax.
- Storage: The SSD is 825GB, but system software uses part of that capacity.
- Dates and stock: Reservations are announced for October 20 and release for November 19, 2026, in Japan; retailer inventory has not been confirmed here.
- Accessories: A vertical stand is not included, and no compatibility for older Midnight Black covers with this console has been confirmed.
