You can either have one player host a world through Steam or run a dedicated server using SteamCMD app 2465200. The host-led approach is quickest; a dedicated server gives the group a more persistent home but requires configuration, UDP port forwarding and regular backups.

What you need before starting multiplayer
The Steam listing identifies Sons of the Forest as a Windows PC release by Endnight Games, published by Newnight, released on February 22, 2024. It lists online co-op and Steam Cloud. The listed price was $29.99 when the page was accessed on October 15, 2026; storefront prices and regional taxes can change.
The reviewed system requirements are for the PC version. Every player should install the same current Steam build before joining. Mismatched updates are a common reason a lobby is invisible or a connection fails.

The available material establishes Windows PC multiplayer, but does not establish cross-platform play or a console version. Treat the documented PC requirements as the baseline for this guide.
How many people can play together?
A dated dedicated-server setup reference documents a range of one to eight players. Plan your group around eight as the documented ceiling for a server configuration. A smaller party is usually easier to coordinate, especially when everyone is learning the island, while a full group can divide construction, food gathering and exploration.
Steam’s description emphasizes surviving with friends, sharing items, building defenses together and bringing backup while exploring both above and below ground. Those activities work best when the group agrees on who controls the world save and where essential supplies are stored.

| Consideration | Steam-hosted co-op | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|
| Setup time | Launch the game, host a multiplayer world and invite friends. | Install and configure a server with SteamCMD, a configuration file and network ports. |
| Host availability | The host normally needs to be online for the group to play that world. | The server can remain available independently of one player’s game session, if the machine and service stay online. |
| Save control | The host account and host’s save location are central to the world. | The server’s data directory is the operational source for the world and should be backed up. |
| Networking | Steam handles the invitation flow, although local firewall or NAT problems can still interfere. | You must allow and, when necessary, forward UDP ports 8766, 27016 and 9700. |
| Maximum documented group | Use the game’s multiplayer limits; the reviewed source does not publish a separate host-specific ceiling. | Set MaxPlayers from 1 through 8 in the server configuration. |
| Ongoing cost | No separate dedicated-server price is established in the reviewed material. | Hardware, electricity or a hosting provider may add cost; no universal current price is established. |
| Recovery | Recovery depends on the host’s local and Steam Cloud saves. | You control the complete server data directory and can restore a backup before an update or configuration change. |
The sources do not establish a universal rule for transferring a peer-hosted save between different hosts. Decide who owns the world before the first session, and do not assume another player can automatically continue it if the original host is unavailable.
How to host a multiplayer game through Steam
Use peer-hosted co-op when you want the least administration and your group can coordinate around one host. Menu wording can change between builds, but the workflow is consistent.
- Update first. In Steam, update Sons of the Forest on every PC. Have everyone launch the same current build before attempting an invitation.
- Pick the world owner. Choose the player with the most reliable availability and enough storage for the save. This person should also perform the backup routine.
- Open the multiplayer host flow. Launch the game, choose the multiplayer option, select the host option, then create a new world or continue the existing host save. If the build presents different labels, select the option that creates or resumes a world rather than joining one.
- Set the party size and starting conditions. Select the intended difficulty and player limit shown by the current build. Do not set a larger party than your hardware and connection can handle simply because the documented server ceiling is eight.
- Invite through Steam. Use the in-game invite control or the Steam overlay to invite the group. Friends should join the host’s session rather than starting separate worlds if the goal is shared progression.
- Confirm the connection before dispersing. Have everyone load into the same world, verify that inventories and the base are visible, and then assign the first objectives. Early confirmation prevents a player from spending an hour in a different save.
- Save deliberately. Save at a safe location before a long cave trip, major construction change or player departure. The host should wait for the save to complete before closing the game.
What the host should communicate
- The host’s Steam name and normal play schedule.
- Where the group’s main base, food stores and spare equipment are located.
- When the host will make manual backups.
- What happens if the host disconnects: pause the expedition, regroup in the base or end the session rather than splitting critical items across abandoned locations.
Does co-op save progress?
Steam lists Steam Cloud for the game, but that does not create a guaranteed, universal host-transfer system. In a peer-hosted world, treat the host as the custodian of the save. Other players may retain character-related progress or items according to the current game build, but the reviewed authoritative material does not document every edge case for changing hosts.
A practical save routine
- Save at the base before inviting anyone.
- Save again after major building, inventory transfers or story progress.
- Keep the host’s Steam account and game installation consistent; avoid switching between machines while a session is active.
- Make a separate copy of the host save on a different drive or protected folder. Steam Cloud is useful redundancy, not a substitute for an independent backup.
- Record the date of the last known-good save before installing a game update or experimental configuration.
If another player must become the organizer, start by copying the host’s save and testing it in a private session. The sources do not promise that every world state, inventory or multiplayer flag will transfer cleanly, so keep the original untouched until the replacement has been verified.

How to run a dedicated server
A dedicated server is appropriate when several people play at different times or no single player should be the permanent host. The dated setup reference documents SteamCMD app 2465200, UDP ports 8766, 27016 and 9700, JSON-style configuration, and a data directory named SonsOfTheForestDS. Because the reference is configuration-focused and labels may change, use the current server files’ comments and examples when a key name differs.
For groups that prefer not to manage SteamCMD themselves, Godlike.Host Sons of the Forest hosting provides a game panel, up to three free backups a day and 24/7/365 support. Its Sons of the Forest plans list 4, 12 and 20 slots; the server’s MaxPlayers setting allows 1 to 8 players (Steam Community server guide, 11 Oct 2026).
1. Prepare the server machine
- Use a Windows machine that meets or exceeds the game’s published PC requirements, with particular attention to 12 GB minimum and 16 GB recommended memory.
- Prefer an SSD, as the game listing does.
- Give the machine a stable local address if you will forward ports from a home router.
- Make sure Windows Firewall and any security software can allow the server process to receive UDP traffic.
2. Install the server files with SteamCMD
Install SteamCMD and select the Sons of the Forest dedicated-server application, using app ID 2465200. Let the download finish completely before creating configuration files. Keep the server installation separate from personal game saves so updates and backups are easier to manage.
3. Configure the server
Locate the server’s dedicatedserver.cfg file and edit the documented JSON configuration. Set MaxPlayers to a value from 1 to 8. Set SaveMode to Continue when the goal is to resume the existing world rather than create a fresh one on each launch.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not paste settings from an unrelated game or an older guide. If a current build supplies a sample configuration, copy its punctuation and nesting exactly; a single misplaced brace can prevent startup.
4. Open the documented UDP ports
Allow and, for an internet-facing server behind a router, forward UDP ports 8766, 27016 and 9700 to the server machine. Forwarding TCP instead of UDP, forwarding to the wrong local address or allowing only one of the three ports can leave the server running but unreachable.
5. Start and test privately
Start the server process, watch its console for a completed startup message, and connect from a second PC before sharing the address with the whole group. Test joining, saving, leaving and rejoining. Confirm that the world resumes after a controlled restart with SaveMode: Continue.

6. Back up the complete data directory
The reference identifies the SonsOfTheForestDS data directory. Back up the complete directory, not just one configuration file, before updating the server, changing player limits or replacing hardware. Keep at least one copy offline or on another drive. A configuration backup without the world data cannot restore the campaign.

Dedicated-server failures and fixes
The server does not appear
- Confirm the server process is still running and did not exit because of invalid JSON.
- Check that all three documented UDP ports are allowed through the host firewall and forwarded to the correct machine.
- Verify that the client and server are on compatible current builds.
- Test from inside the same network and from an external connection; this distinguishes a local firewall problem from router or internet reachability.
Players can join but lose the world
- Check that
SaveModeis set toContinue, using the exact syntax required by the installed build. - Verify the server account has write permission for the
SonsOfTheForestDSdata directory. - Stop the server cleanly before copying or restoring files.
- Restore the last complete backup rather than mixing files from different dates.
Eight players cause instability
Eight is the documented ceiling, not a performance guarantee. Reduce MaxPlayers, lower demanding graphics settings on clients and test with a smaller party. Memory pressure is more likely on systems near the 12 GB minimum; 16 GB is the published recommendation.
Organize an eight-player survival group
Co-op becomes less chaotic when responsibilities are explicit. Use roles as a starting point and rotate them so one disconnected player does not own every critical resource.
Base, storage and defenses
One player can lead shelter construction, storage organization and defensive walls. Keep shared items in clearly agreed locations, and announce when rare materials are taken for a personal project.
Food and seasonal supplies
A second player can concentrate on food, water and supplies that are easy to overlook while everyone explores. Keep a reserve at the base rather than carrying the entire stock into a cave.

A third role focuses on mapping routes, identifying threats and leading cave or surface expeditions. The scout should report what the group needs before the next trip so builders and suppliers can prepare.
Rotate ownership
Change roles between sessions. Rotation spreads knowledge of the base and prevents the campaign from depending on one person’s inventory, schedule or memory.

What happens when a player dies?
Endnight’s January 21, 2025 update added the ability to revive players who die while swimming in multiplayer. The same announcement changed Kelvin and Virginia’s swimming behavior. This is a specific multiplayer recovery change; it should not be treated as a promise that every death in every location has a revive option.
When someone dies in water, keep the surviving group nearby and follow the revive interaction shown by the current build. If no prompt appears, do not assume the player can be recovered in that situation; reload the latest safe save only after the group has confirmed that the world has been saved or that the loss is acceptable.
Kelvin, Virginia and other companions
Kelvin and Virginia are gameplay companions, not additional network players. Their behavior can change with patches, as shown by the January 21, 2025 swimming changes. Give companions safe, simple tasks when the group is preparing for an expedition, and avoid building a plan that depends on an undocumented revival or permanent-death rule.
Keep critical resources and mission decisions under player control. A companion can support the group, but the reviewed sources do not establish universal guarantees about companion survival, recovery or behavior after every multiplayer failure.
Performance and connection checklist
- Install the game and server files on an SSD when possible.
- Close memory-heavy applications before hosting, especially on a machine close to the 12 GB minimum.
- Use wired networking for the host or server when practical.
- Ask all players to update before the session rather than during a planned expedition.
- Save before changing host settings, adding a player or applying an update.
- Reduce the party size if the host becomes unstable; the eight-player ceiling is not a promise of equal performance on every PC.
- Keep the original save or server backup until a restored copy has successfully loaded.
Recommended setup for most groups
For a group that plays at the same time, start with Steam-hosted co-op. Choose one reliable host, use a consistent save routine and keep an independent copy of the host save. Move to a dedicated server when different schedules make host availability the main obstacle, or when the group wants centralized control over the world data. In that case, plan the port, firewall, configuration and backup work before inviting eight players.
The essential decisions are simple: everyone must be on the same current Windows PC build, the group should agree who owns or administers the world, and backups must exist before updates or risky expeditions. With those safeguards, the game’s online co-op systems support shared building, resource management and exploration without making one forgotten save or disconnected host the single point of failure.
