The safest way to begin building in Sons of the Forest is to keep the first base small: make a usable shelter or platform, put storage within a few steps of it, and defend only the approach you actually use. The Guide Book supports both ready-made blueprints and log-by-log construction, while Kelvin can now handle much of the hauling, completion, repair, and defensive-wall maintenance.
For multiplayer building sessions, Godlike.Host provides Sons of the Forest game servers through its own game panel, with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day with restore. Its Sons of the Forest plans list 4, 12 and 20 slots; the server’s MaxPlayers setting allows 1 to 8 players (Steam Community server guide, 11 Oct 2026).

How building works in Sons of the Forest
All construction starts in the Guide Book, also called the Survival Book. It is the construction hub rather than a single build mode. One interface is for prefab blueprints; the other is for custom construction. Switching between them changes whether you place a complete design first or assemble every part yourself.
Prefab blueprints
In the prefab view, choose a predefined structure and place its translucent construction ghost in the world. The ghost shows the footprint and the intended shape before any materials are committed. Once it is positioned, you supply the required logs, sticks, or other components until the structure is complete.

Blueprints are useful when you are learning the game because they make the final form clear before you spend time cutting trees. They also make it easier to repeat a practical shape, such as a small shelter or a drawn defensive line. A blueprint does not remove the material requirement: it only organizes the construction process.
Custom construction
The custom view replaces the finished ghost with illustrated instructions. You place individual logs and other components, then follow the indicated sequence to create foundations, floors, ramps, stairs, doors, and walls. Full logs and split logs are both used, so custom building gives you more control over shape but demands more attention to alignment and support.
Custom mode is the better choice when the terrain or your plan does not fit a standard footprint. It is also the fastest way to learn how pieces connect. Start with a small experiment rather than a large compound: a compact floor, one ramp, or a short wall lets you understand placement behavior without creating a large repair obligation.
What to build first: a reliable opening sequence
The order below keeps the first material haul, walking distance, and repair area manageable. It is a practical sequence built around the game’s documented blueprint, custom-log, and maintenance systems.
- Choose a practical route. Place the first structure near the resources you expect to collect repeatedly, while leaving enough open ground to carry and place logs. A location that looks impressive but forces every load through a narrow or awkward approach will slow every later upgrade.
- Place a compact shelter or platform. Use a small prefab if you want predictable dimensions, or make a simple custom footprint if you want to learn log placement immediately. Do not begin by enclosing a large area; make one usable sleeping and working space first.
- Finish the basic floor and access. Confirm that the structure is reachable and that you can carry materials to it without walking around the entire footprint. If you use a raised design, place the access ramp or stairs before adding decorative extensions.
- Add nearby holders and storage. Keep log, stick, and other storage along one side of the base or beside the main approach. The goal is to shorten the path between gathering, depositing, and building, not to fill every spare corner.
- Watch how enemies approach. Before drawing a long perimeter, observe which side is exposed and which approach you naturally use. A short defensive line on that side gives you a repairable first layer without committing to a huge wall.
- Expand only after the first shelter works. Add rooms, extra platforms, or a larger perimeter when the original area is easy to reach, supplied, and maintain. Expansion is much easier when the initial footprint has a clear edge rather than a maze of unfinished pieces.
Three starter designs that work for different priorities
| Design | Material profile | Expansion path | Approach control | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact square shelter | Lowest-material starting pattern when kept small | Add storage along one side, then extend or add a short outer line | Good visibility if one side remains open; a short exposed approach is easy to watch | First base, solo play, or a site where repairs must stay simple |
| Raised platform starter | Small footprint, with extra work for supports and access | Add stairs, storage, and a limited perimeter around the platform | Elevation can make the work area easy to observe, but access points still need attention | Players who want a compact work-and-sleep area with room underneath or around it |
| Perimeter-first camp | More early wall work; keep the enclosed area deliberately small | Extend the drawn line in sections rather than enclosing unused ground | Strongest control over the chosen approach, but entrances and weak sides remain active concerns | Locations where attacks are frequent and a controlled defensive boundary matters immediately |
Compact square shelter
Use a small prefab or a simple custom square. Put storage on one side, leaving the opposite side clear for bringing in logs. A short defensive line at the exposed approach is more manageable than a complete wall around a large camp. This pattern is forgiving because every part is close enough to inspect and repair in one trip.
Keep the first interior functional rather than decorative. A sleeping spot, a place to deposit materials, and a clear path in and out matter more than extra rooms. Once you know where enemies appear and which side you use for gathering, extend the useful edge instead of adding space everywhere.

Raised platform starter
A platform concentrates work and sleeping space into a small footprint. It can later accept stairs, storage, or a short perimeter, so it is a good way to prototype the relationship between floor height, access, and defense. Keep the initial platform modest until you understand how logs align and how supports behave on the chosen ground.

A single, obvious ramp or stair route is easier to defend and easier for Kelvin to service than several improvised entrances. Leave enough room around the approach to carry materials without repeatedly colliding with the structure.
Perimeter-first camp
If attacks are already disrupting work, draw a defensive-wall blueprint around only the space you actively use. The objective is a short, controlled line that protects a real work area, not a boundary around empty terrain. Keep the entrance visible and avoid creating blind corners that you cannot inspect quickly.
This design works best when you have a clear idea of the camp’s active footprint. If you draw the wall before deciding where storage and access belong, you can end up defending unused ground while leaving the practical approach awkwardly exposed.
Logs, split logs, and the custom-building decisions
Custom construction uses full logs and split logs for foundations, floors, ramps, stairs, doors, and walls. The illustrated instructions in the Guide Book are the authority for the piece you are placing; use them as a sequence rather than trying to improvise every connection at once.
Recommended Free Tools
Build the load-bearing or walking surface first, then add access and enclosure. A floor that is too large for the available supply becomes a logistics problem before it becomes a shelter. Likewise, a long staircase or ramp can consume the usable approach if it is placed without leaving room for carrying logs.

When a custom piece does not line up as expected, stop adding adjacent pieces and correct the current connection. Extending an incorrect angle multiplies the amount you must remove or work around. Small test sections are cheaper than discovering an alignment problem after a full perimeter is attached.
Defensive walls: delay, channel, and inspect
Ordinary walls are not a guaranteed security barrier. The custom-building reference warns that cannibals and some mutants can scale basic walls, so treat a wall as a way to delay movement and channel an approach rather than as a complete promise of safety.
- Defend the approach you actually use. A short line across a predictable route is easier to monitor than a large rectangle with several unattended sides.
- Keep an entrance deliberate. You need to know where you will pass through and where an enemy can reach the interior. An obvious entrance is easier to check than a gap created accidentally by unfinished construction.
- Inspect after trips away. Damage, incomplete sections, and newly vulnerable corners can change the way enemies reach the camp. Walk the outside edge rather than assuming the wall still performs as it did when you left.
- Do not build past your repair capacity. A perimeter that takes too long to walk and maintain can be less useful than a shorter, intact line.
Because some enemies can climb, combine a wall with observation and sensible placement. The wall buys time and makes approaches more predictable; it does not replace awareness of what is on the other side.
Using Kelvin to finish and maintain a base
Patch 15 added commands for Kelvin to repair structures, sharpen defensive walls, and maintain the base. The maintain-base command fills holders to capacity, completes in-progress structures, repairs damage, and sharpens placed defensive walls. Later, Patch 16 added the ability for Kelvin to finish drawn defensive-wall structures.
A practical Kelvin workflow
- Place the blueprint or start the custom section. Kelvin cannot choose your footprint or decide which side should be defended; you must establish the structure and its location.
- Make materials reachable. Put required logs and holders where he can access them without crossing a cluttered or blocked route. Storage that is technically nearby but trapped behind unfinished pieces is not a reliable supply point.
- Assign the finishing or maintain-base task. Use the command after the work area and material route are ready, rather than asking him to service a site that is still being redesigned.
- Leave room for movement. Keep the main approach clear so he can reach holders and unfinished sections. A compact layout helps automation because fewer obstacles interrupt the route.
- Inspect when you return. Check the perimeter, entrances, and any section you started manually. Kelvin reduces repetitive hauling and repair work, but you still need to identify weak approaches and decide what should be built next.
Kelvin’s automation is most valuable on repetitive work: filling holders, completing a stable plan, repairing damage, and sharpening placed defensive walls. It is not a substitute for deciding the footprint, keeping access open, or checking whether an enemy has bypassed the line.
Blueprints or free-building: which should you choose?
| Question | Prefab blueprint | Custom construction |
|---|---|---|
| How do you begin? | Place a translucent construction ghost | Follow illustrated instructions and place individual components |
| How much control do you have? | Control the position and orientation of a predefined form | Control the shape and sequence using full and split logs and other pieces |
| Learning curve | Lower for a first shelter because the final form is visible | Higher, especially when learning alignment and support behavior |
| Best reason to use it | Fast, repeatable structures and drawn defensive lines | Terrain-specific layouts, unusual footprints, and deliberate experimentation |
| Kelvin’s role | Can complete the planned structure when materials and access are available | Can maintain and repair placed work, but you still assemble the design and define its boundaries |
| Main risk | Placing a footprint that is larger than your supply or awkward for access | Creating alignment, support, or repair problems through uncontrolled expansion |
A good progression is to use a prefab for the first shelter, try a small custom section while resources are nearby, and use whichever mode produces the clearest layout for your perimeter. The two modes are complementary rather than mutually exclusive.

Storage and logistics: make the base easy to service
Storage placement determines how much time the base saves you. Put holders on the side closest to the usual gathering route, but leave a straight approach so logs can be carried in without weaving through the living area. Keep frequently used materials together instead of scattering single holders around the entire footprint.

If one of those trips requires circling the base, move the holder before adding another room. This is especially important when Kelvin is maintaining the base, because clear routes and accessible capacity make his assigned work more reliable.
Do not fill every open patch with storage on day one. Reserve a side for future stairs, an extension, or a defensive approach. A little unused space is cheaper than dismantling a holder line that blocks your only practical entrance.
Expanding without creating a repair trap
Extend one edge
Choose the side that already has the best material access and add one functional section at a time. Extending one edge preserves a known entrance and keeps the old shelter usable while the new work is unfinished.
Separate work and defense
Keep the busiest hauling route outside the sleeping and storage core when possible. A compact inner area with a short outer defensive line is easier to inspect than a single oversized compound where every activity shares the same narrow path.

Common problems and how to correct them
The first base is too large
Stop adding sections and identify the smallest area that contains your shelter, storage, and normal approach. Use that as the active footprint. A short perimeter or a single extension can make the oversized plan useful without requiring you to finish every empty corner.
Kelvin is not completing the work
Check that the structure is actually placed, the required materials are in accessible holders, and the route is not blocked by your own construction. If you changed the design repeatedly, cancel the unstable work and give him one clear, finite task. Then inspect the structure yourself rather than assuming the command covers a section that was never properly started.
The wall does not feel safe
That concern is justified: basic walls can be climbed by cannibals and some mutants. Shorten the active perimeter, improve visibility of the approach, and inspect corners and entrances after expeditions. Use the wall to slow and channel enemies while you manage the space inside.

Materials are taking too long to reach the build site
Move holders toward the resource route and leave a clear carrying lane. If the route still crosses the entire camp, reconsider the footprint before adding more storage. A smaller shelter near a practical route often saves more time than a larger, more elaborate base farther away.
A raised platform is awkward to enter
Prioritize one clear ramp or stair connection and keep its approach free of holders and unfinished walls. Add other access points only when you can monitor and maintain them. The platform is useful because it concentrates space; it loses that advantage when access becomes a maze.
Patch and version context
Building behavior is patch-sensitive, so verify controls and interactions against the version installed on your system. Official Patch 16 was released on January 15, 2025. It added three raft structures, a mooring post, Knight V and glider holders, and drawn defensive-wall structures. Its announcement also states: “We also added a procedural defensive wall placement system so you can now just draw out where you want the walls and let Kelvin finish them.”
The current-version summary in the community wiki lists Patch 16 Hotfix 3 as released on October 3, 2025. That date identifies the version summary, not a guarantee that every platform receives an identical build at the same time. If an interaction described here is missing, compare your installed patch and platform before rebuilding your layout around it.

A decision checklist for your first permanent camp
- Can you reach the shelter, storage, and entrance without circling the whole footprint?
- Is the first structure small enough to finish and repair with the resources you can regularly collect?
- Have you chosen prefab or custom mode for a clear reason: predictable form, or terrain-specific control?
- Does the defensive line cover the approach you actually use rather than empty ground?
- Can Kelvin reach the holders and unfinished sections without blocked routes?
- Have you left one side available for a future extension, ramp, or controlled entrance?
- Have you checked the wall after an expedition instead of treating it as permanent protection?
If the answer to these questions is yes, the base is ready to grow. Add complexity only when it improves a real task—sleeping, storing, carrying, observing, or delaying an attack. In this game, a compact structure that you can finish and maintain consistently is a stronger starting point than an ambitious compound that remains half built.
