Set up the Sonos Era 100 in the Sonos app while your phone or tablet is connected to the Wi‑Fi network you want the speaker to use. A new system follows the app’s speaker-setup flow; an existing system uses Settings > Add Speaker or Component. Finish Wi‑Fi setup before using Bluetooth.

After placing the speaker where it will stay, run Trueplay in the app. Quick tuning works on iOS and Android through the Era 100’s built-in microphones; advanced tuning uses an iPhone or iPad microphone and is available only on iOS.

What you need before starting

Have the Era 100, its power cable, a nearby outlet, and a compatible iOS or Android phone or tablet ready. Install or open the latest Sonos app and connect the mobile device to the intended home Wi‑Fi network before beginning.

Sonos lists support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi networks through broadcast-capable routers using 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax, including Wi‑Fi 6 compatibility. The normal setup path is wireless; an Ethernet connection is optional and requires the separately sold Sonos Combo Adapter.

Sonos Era 100 SL - Black (Pack of 2)
  • The information below is per-pack only
  • Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
  • Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
  • Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app

The phone or tablet is the control device during installation, so keep it close to the speaker and on the same home network throughout the process. A Sonos account is also needed: the app will ask you to create one or sign in before it finishes configuring a new system. You do not need a Line-In Adapter, Combo Adapter, or Bluetooth connection to complete ordinary Wi‑Fi setup.

Requirement or option What it is used for
Sonos app on iOS or Android Initial speaker setup, account sign-in, adding the Era 100, playback and tuning
Phone or tablet on the intended Wi‑Fi Lets the app find and configure the speaker on your home network
Power outlet Runs the Era 100 during setup and normal use
2.4 GHz or 5 GHz Wi‑Fi Supported wireless network bands for the speaker
Bluetooth device Additional playback route after Wi‑Fi setup is complete
Sonos Line-In Adapter Optional USB‑C connection for a wired source such as a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, CD player or projector
Sonos Combo Adapter Optional Ethernet connection and line-in capability through the Era 100’s USB‑C port

Decide which setup path applies

There are two different app routes. Choose the new-system flow if this is your first Sonos product or you are deliberately creating a separate system. Choose the add-speaker flow if other Sonos rooms already appear in your account. Using the wrong route can leave the Era 100 in a separate system instead of making it available with your existing rooms.

Your situation App path Result
No existing Sonos system Set up a speaker or component Creates or configures the new system after account sign-in
Existing Sonos system Settings > Add Speaker or Component Adds Era 100 to the same system and its rooms

Place and power the Era 100

  1. Put the speaker near its intended listening position and within reach of the power cable.
  2. Use a stable bookshelf, counter, desk or nightstand. If the speaker is next to a wall or sitting on a shelf, leave at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) behind it.
  3. Connect the power cable and wait for the speaker to become available to the Sonos app.

Do not tune the speaker before deciding where it will live. Trueplay measures the acoustics of that position, so moving the Era 100 later can make the previous tuning no longer representative. Put it at its normal height and orientation, clear enough space around it to leave the recommended rear clearance, and finish any permanent placement changes before tuning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set up a new Sonos system

Use this path when the Era 100 is the first Sonos product in the system or when you are creating a separate new system.

  1. Connect your phone or tablet to the home Wi‑Fi network that the Era 100 should use.
  2. Open the latest Sonos app.
  3. Choose the option to set up a speaker or component.
  4. Create a Sonos account or sign in to an existing account when the app asks.
  5. Select the Era 100 when it appears as the detected speaker.
  6. Follow each in-app instruction to complete the wireless configuration.

Keep the app open and the mobile device on the same intended network while the setup is running. The app’s prompts are the authoritative workflow for the current version; labels can change as Sonos updates its software. If the app finds more than one speaker, select the Era 100 you have just powered rather than another nearby Sonos product.

Add an Era 100 to an existing Sonos system

If you already have a Sonos system, do not start a separate new system just for this speaker. Add it to the existing one:

  1. Open the Sonos app while the phone or tablet is connected to the system’s Wi‑Fi network.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Add Speaker or Component.
  4. Choose the Era 100 when the app detects it.
  5. Continue through the on-screen prompts until the app confirms the addition.

This keeps the new speaker in the same Sonos system as your existing rooms. If the Era 100 does not appear, check power and confirm that the mobile device has not switched to a different Wi‑Fi network before trying the add-speaker flow again. Once the app confirms the addition, assign or name the room as prompted so you can identify it during playback and tuning.

Sonos Era 100 - Black - Wireless, Alexa Enabled Smart Speaker | WiFi | Bluetooth | Pair for Stereo or Surround | 47% faster processor | Next-gen dual-tweeter acoustic architecture
  • Powered by a 47% faster processor, the next-gen dual-tweeter acoustic architecture produces detailed stereo separation while a 25% larger midwoofer deepens the bass.¹
  • Place this speaker anywhere and everywhere you want to listen. The compact design fits beautifully on your bookshelf, kitchen counter, desk, or nightstand.
  • Stream from all your favorite services over WiFi. Pair a Bluetooth device with the press of a button. Connect a turntable or other audio source using an auxiliary cable and the Sonos Line-In Adapter.²
  • Go from unboxing to unbelievable sound in just a few minutes. Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app.
  • With a tap in the Sonos app, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the speaker’s EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.

Complete Wi‑Fi setup before using Bluetooth

The Era 100 can play audio from a paired Bluetooth device, but Bluetooth is an additional playback route, not a replacement for the first Sonos setup. First make the speaker visible in the Sonos app and finish its Wi‑Fi configuration. Then use the Bluetooth controls on the Era 100 and the source device to pair them.

Setting up Wi‑Fi first matters even if Bluetooth is your intended day-to-day source: the Sonos app, room assignment and Trueplay controls depend on the speaker being part of the Sonos system. Bluetooth does not bypass the account, network discovery, or initial speaker configuration.

Choose the right room position

Era 100 is designed for ordinary furniture placement rather than a special stand. A bookshelf, counter, desk or nightstand can work, provided the speaker is stable and has the recommended clearance behind it.

  • Leave at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) behind the speaker when it is against a wall or on a shelf.
  • Place it where you normally listen; tuning a temporary location and then moving the speaker defeats the room correction.
  • Settle the speaker’s orientation and location before starting Trueplay.
  • Avoid relocating it while a tuning session is in progress. If the final position changes afterward, plan to tune again.

What Trueplay changes

Trueplay measures the way sound reflects from walls, furnishings and other surfaces, then adjusts the speaker’s equalization for that room. Sonos describes the purpose as making the speaker sound good regardless of where it has been placed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Trueplay measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, then fine tunes your Sonos speaker to make sure it sounds great no matter where you’ve placed it.”

Sonos says a tuning session takes approximately three minutes. That is an estimate for the tuning process, not a guarantee for the entire installation, account setup or troubleshooting. The measurement is specific to the Era 100’s room, position and configuration, so it is not a one-time setting that follows the speaker everywhere.

Quick Trueplay: the cross-platform option

Quick tuning uses the Era 100’s built-in microphones and is available in the Sonos app on both iOS and Android. It is the practical choice when you use an Android phone or when you want the simpler tuning method.

Sonos Era 100 SL Compact, Microphone-Free Speaker - Black
  • Dual angled tweeters and a powerful midwoofer deliver rich, balanced stereo sound with deep bass.
  • The perfect start or addition to your system, Era 100 SL makes Sonos sound more accessible.
  • Stream over WiFi, pair via Bluetooth, or connect a turntable and more with line in.
  • Go from unboxing to incredible sound in minutes with a quick plug-in and the Sonos app
  • Trueplay fine-tunes Era 100 SL for the unique acoustics of the room.
  1. Finish Wi‑Fi setup and place the Era 100 in its final position.
  2. Open the Sonos app and select the Era 100’s audio or room settings.
  3. Start the Trueplay tuning option and choose quick tuning when prompted.
  4. Make sure the speaker’s microphone switch is on. Quick tuning relies on the built-in microphones.
  5. Keep the room as quiet as possible while the tuning sound plays.
  6. Let the app complete the process without changing the playback volume.

Android supports this quick method, but it does not support Sonos’s advanced Trueplay process. Quick tuning is therefore the only Trueplay choice when the available mobile device is Android.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Advanced Trueplay: the iOS-only method

Advanced tuning uses the microphone in a compatible iPhone or iPad rather than relying only on the Era 100’s built-in microphones. It samples more of the listening area, so the user moves around the room while the app plays its test sounds.

  1. Use an iPhone or iPad and place the Era 100 where it will remain.
  2. Open the Sonos app and start Trueplay for the speaker.
  3. Select the advanced tuning process when the app offers the choice.
  4. Allow microphone access if iOS requests it.
  5. Follow the app’s movement instructions and cover as much of the room as practical.
  6. Keep background noise low and do not adjust the Era 100’s volume during the test.
  7. Wait for the app to confirm completion before leaving the tuning screen.

The advanced method is not available on Android. If you use Android, choose quick tuning instead. The speaker’s microphone switch should still be on for microphone-based speaker features, while the iPhone or iPad supplies the measurement microphone for the advanced process.

Trueplay methods compared

Characteristic Quick tuning Advanced tuning
Mobile device iOS or Android iOS only
Microphone Era 100’s built-in microphones Microphone in the iPhone or iPad
Process Simpler in-app tuning Move around the room to sample more listening positions
Microphone switch Must be on The speaker’s microphone-based features still require the microphone switch to be on; the mobile device also supplies the measurement microphone
Best fit Android users or anyone wanting the quickest method iOS users who can spend time covering the listening area

Neither method is a substitute for correct placement. Quick tuning is convenient and cross-platform; advanced tuning takes more movement and requires iOS. In both cases, the useful preparation is the same: finish network setup, settle the speaker, reduce noise, and leave the volume alone while the test sounds play.

When to run Trueplay again

Retune after moving the Era 100 to another part of the room or changing its configuration. A new position changes the reflections that Trueplay measures. If you move the speaker only temporarily, you can wait; if the new position is permanent, run the process again after the placement is settled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the most consistent result, close noisy activities, keep people from talking through the test, and leave the playback level untouched while the measurement sounds are playing. Retuning is also appropriate if you rearrange nearby furnishings enough to change the room’s acoustic surfaces.

Optional wired connections

Neither adapter is required for ordinary Wi‑Fi setup or Trueplay. The Era 100’s USB‑C port can accept optional accessories when wireless playback is not the right fit. These are separate purchases, and their purpose is connection flexibility rather than a performance requirement for basic installation.

Line-in for an external source

The Sonos Line-In Adapter can connect a wired source such as a CD player, a projector or a turntable that already has a built-in phono preamp. It is an additional purchase and is unnecessary if you only plan to stream over Wi‑Fi or use Bluetooth. A turntable without a built-in phono preamp would need the appropriate phono-stage equipment before it can provide the expected signal.

Ethernet with the Combo Adapter

The Sonos Combo Adapter can provide Ethernet for a wired network connection and can also support line-in. This is an option for a location where Wi‑Fi is unreliable or where you specifically want a wired network link. The standard setup still starts in the Sonos app; the adapter is not a prerequisite for discovering the speaker. Choose Wi‑Fi for the normal installation and consider the Combo Adapter only when a wired network or its line-in function solves a specific need.

Troubleshoot the most common setup problems

The app cannot find the Era 100

  • Confirm that the speaker is powered and has finished starting.
  • Check that the phone or tablet is connected to the intended home Wi‑Fi rather than a guest or different network.
  • Use the current Sonos app version.
  • For an existing system, return to Settings > Add Speaker or Component instead of beginning a new-system setup.
  • Keep the mobile device close enough to the speaker during discovery and follow the app’s prompts rather than switching apps repeatedly.
  • If the wireless network remains unreliable at the speaker’s location, consider the optional Combo Adapter for Ethernet.

Trueplay will not start or finishes without using the microphones

  • Check the Era 100’s physical microphone switch. It must be on for the speaker’s built-in-microphone features, including quick tuning.
  • On Android, select quick tuning; advanced Trueplay is iOS-only.
  • On iOS, allow the Sonos app to use the device microphone when prompted for advanced tuning.
  • Make sure the speaker is already part of the Sonos system and visible in the app before opening Trueplay.

The tuning result sounds inconsistent

  • Repeat the process in the speaker’s final position.
  • Reduce background noise and avoid conversations during the test.
  • Do not change the volume while the tuning sound is playing.
  • For advanced tuning, move through as much of the room as the app requests rather than remaining in one spot.
  • Retune if the speaker has been moved or its configuration has changed.

Bluetooth playback is unavailable

Verify that Wi‑Fi setup is complete and that the Era 100 is visible in the Sonos app. Bluetooth playback follows the initial Sonos Wi‑Fi setup; it is not the first-installation path. Once the speaker is configured, use the speaker and source device’s Bluetooth controls to complete pairing.

The speaker is in the wrong system

If the Era 100 does not appear with your other rooms, the new-system flow may have been used accidentally. Return to the Sonos app and use Settings > Add Speaker or Component for the system you actually want to expand. The existing-system route is the documented way to keep the new speaker with the rest of your Sonos rooms.

A short completion checklist

  • The Era 100 is powered and placed with at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) behind it when next to a wall or on a shelf.
  • The phone or tablet is on the intended 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz home Wi‑Fi network.
  • The latest Sonos app has completed either new-system setup or Settings > Add Speaker or Component.
  • The speaker appears in the correct Sonos system and room.
  • Bluetooth is attempted only after Wi‑Fi setup is finished.
  • The microphone switch is on before quick tuning or other microphone-based features.
  • Trueplay is run in the final room position, with minimal noise and no volume changes during the measurement.
  • The speaker is retuned after a permanent move or configuration change.
  • Any Line-In or Combo Adapter is purchased only for the wired source or Ethernet function you actually need.

Why must the Era 100 microphone switch be on?

The switch enables the speaker’s built-in microphones, which quick Trueplay and other microphone-based features require.

Where can I place an Era 100?

Sonos supports placement on a bookshelf, counter, desk or nightstand. Leave at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) behind it when it is next to a wall or on a shelf.

How long does Trueplay take?

Sonos says a tuning session takes approximately three minutes. Installation, account setup and troubleshooting can take additional time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a Sonos adapter for setup?

No. Wi‑Fi setup and Trueplay work without an adapter. The Line-In Adapter is for wired sources, while the Combo Adapter adds Ethernet and line-in capability.

When should I retune the speaker?

Run Trueplay again after moving the speaker permanently or changing its configuration, because the room reflections measured by the previous session have changed.

The Bottom Line

Connect the Era 100 to power, put your phone or tablet on the intended home Wi‑Fi, and complete the correct Sonos app flow: speaker setup for a new system or Settings > Add Speaker or Component for an existing one. Use Bluetooth only after that step. Once the speaker is in its final room position, run quick Trueplay on iOS or Android, or advanced Trueplay on iOS, with the microphone switch on, little background noise and no volume changes. Retune after moving it; buy a Line-In or Combo Adapter only when you need a wired source or Ethernet.
