For dependable TV power and volume control, connect Sonos Beam Ultra to the television’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, then enable the TV maker’s HDMI-CEC feature. For Dolby Atmos, the same ARC/eARC connection is required, and every link in the chain—the TV, source device, streaming service and plan, and audio-output settings—must support Atmos. Configure the soundbar in the Sonos app before expecting TV audio.
Optical can carry TV sound when ARC/eARC is unavailable, but it cannot carry HDMI-CEC commands. That means optical does not provide TV power control, TV-volume control through CEC, or supported voice control.

What Beam Ultra needs from your TV
Beam Ultra receives television audio through the TV’s HDMI-ARC or HDMI-eARC socket. A regular HDMI input is not equivalent: it accepts video and source devices but does not return TV audio to the soundbar. Look for a port explicitly marked ARC or eARC on the television chassis or in its manual.
- HDMI cable: Start with the HDMI cable included with Beam Ultra. Replace it only if it is damaged, too short, or cannot be routed securely.
- HDMI-CEC: CEC is the control channel used for compatible TV power, volume and certain voice commands. The setting has a different marketing name on each TV brand, so search the TV’s HDMI, external-device or system settings for its CEC option.
- Atmos-capable equipment: The television, the playback device, the streaming service and your service plan must all support Dolby Atmos. A single stereo-only component prevents an Atmos signal from reaching Beam Ultra.
- Sonos setup: Add and configure Beam Ultra in the Sonos app before troubleshooting TV audio. The app is also where you verify the incoming format and adjust height audio.
Sonos documents ARC/eARC as the connection that carries television audio to a home-theater product. Not every television has either port, so confirm the specification for your exact TV model rather than assuming that every HDMI socket supports audio return.

Connect Beam Ultra to the correct HDMI port
- Place Beam Ultra in front of the TV with its microphones and speakers unobstructed. Leave enough space for the soundbar’s normal height-channel output unless your installation requires the simulated mode described below.
- Insert one end of the included HDMI cable into Beam Ultra’s HDMI socket.
- Insert the other end into the TV socket labeled HDMI ARC or HDMI eARC. Do not use a port labeled only HDMI, HDMI 1, HDMI 2 or similar.
- Open the Sonos app and follow the room setup flow to add Beam Ultra. TV audio is not available until the product has been configured in the app.
- In the TV’s sound menu, choose the external receiver, HDMI-ARC, eARC or similarly named output instead of the built-in TV speakers. Labeling varies by manufacturer and model.
- Enable the TV’s HDMI-CEC control feature. CEC may be grouped under HDMI settings, device-link settings, external inputs or system controls.
- Play a known TV source and test volume and power from the TV remote. If sound works but commands do not, leave the cable in place and return to the CEC checks rather than moving Beam Ultra to a different HDMI port.
When these conditions are met, Sonos states that Beam Ultra can use the TV’s HDMI-CEC connection for supported power, volume and voice commands. CEC is separate from the audio stream: it is possible to hear sound while control commands remain disabled.
Set up HDMI-CEC for reliable TV control
Turn on the manufacturer’s CEC option
TV makers use different names for HDMI-CEC. The exact label is not universal, so consult the TV manual if a search for “CEC” finds nothing. Enable the feature for the HDMI input connected to Beam Ultra, and keep the sound output set to the external receiver or ARC/eARC path.

Test the three control functions separately
- Volume: Press volume up and down on the TV remote and check that Beam Ultra responds.
- Power: Turn the TV off and on, watching whether Beam Ultra follows the TV state.
- Voice commands: Test only commands supported by your TV and Beam Ultra configuration. Voice control still requires the ARC/eARC connection and active CEC.
If all three fail while TV audio plays, the likely fault is CEC configuration or the physical connection to the wrong HDMI socket. Reseat both ends of the cable, verify the ARC/eARC label, and confirm CEC remains enabled after the TV’s setup process.

Get Dolby Atmos from the complete signal path
Beam Ultra supports Dolby Atmos in a compatible home-theater setup, but the soundbar cannot create an Atmos badge from a stereo source. Atmos must survive every stage between the content and the soundbar:

- Content and subscription: Use a title and streaming service that actually offer Atmos, and a plan that includes the Atmos tier when the service distinguishes plans.
- Playback device: The built-in TV app, streaming stick, game console or disc player must output Atmos. Check that device’s audio setting is not locked to stereo or another non-Atmos format.
- TV processing: Set the TV’s digital-audio output to a mode that passes Atmos over ARC/eARC. A stereo-only output setting will strip the object-based format before it reaches Beam Ultra.
- Physical route: Keep the return path on HDMI ARC/eARC. Intermediate switches, adapters or extractors can alter the signal; remove them temporarily when diagnosing an Atmos problem.
- Sonos confirmation: Start playback and look for the Atmos badge on the Sonos app’s Now Playing screen. Use the app’s TV-audio-format information to see what format Beam Ultra is receiving.
Sonos specifically says Beam Ultra must be connected to the TV’s HDMI-ARC input to play Dolby Atmos content; eARC is the equivalent return connection when provided by the television. If the TV manual does not list ARC or eARC, it cannot provide Atmos to Beam Ultra through the normal HDMI return route.
Connection choices: ARC/eARC versus optical
| Connection | Dolby Atmos | TV power and volume control | Installation notes | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC | Supported when the TV, source and service support Atmos and the TV passes it through | HDMI-CEC available when enabled on the TV | Use the included HDMI cable in the port marked ARC | Your TV has ARC and you want one connection for audio and control |
| HDMI eARC | Supported when all components and settings support Atmos | HDMI-CEC available when enabled | Use the TV’s eARC-labeled socket; consult the TV manual for output options | Your TV provides eARC or requires that return path for its supported formats |
| Optical | Cannot provide the HDMI Atmos path described by Sonos | CEC and supported voice TV control unavailable | Fallback audio connection when ARC/eARC is not available | You need basic TV sound and accept losing HDMI control features |
Sonos warns that an optical connection cannot control the TV using CEC or voice. Therefore, optical is not a fix for a Beam Ultra installation whose priority is remote power and volume control; it is an audio-only fallback.

Adjust Beam Ultra height audio
Height Level controls the volume of Beam Ultra’s height channels. To change it, open the Sonos app, choose Settings, select the room containing the Atmos-capable home-theater product, then choose Sound > Height Audio.
Normal overhead-channel playback
Use the standard height setting when the soundbar has the clearance and placement required for its upward-firing or height-channel design. Adjust Height Level gradually while playing Atmos content; the setting changes the height-channel volume, not the TV’s general volume.

Less than four inches of clearance
Sonos documents a simulated overhead-sound mode for Beam Ultra when there is less than 4 inches of clearance above the soundbar. In that mode, simulated height audio replaces playback from the top of the speaker. Choose it when a shelf, cabinet or TV position leaves that limited space, then set the Height Level in the same Sonos app menu.
Measure the space above the soundbar rather than estimating from the front edge. If you change the shelf, wall mount or TV position later, revisit Height Audio so the mode matches the new clearance.
Troubleshoot in the order that isolates the fault
No TV sound
- Check that Beam Ultra is configured in the Sonos app and assigned to the intended room.
- Confirm the HDMI cable is firmly seated at both ends.
- Verify the TV end is the ARC/eARC socket, not an ordinary HDMI input.
- Set the TV’s sound output to the external receiver, ARC or eARC path.
- Play another TV source to determine whether the problem affects all inputs or only one app or device.
Sound works, but the remote cannot change volume or power
- Open the TV’s system or HDMI settings and enable its HDMI-CEC feature.
- Confirm Beam Ultra has not been moved from the ARC/eARC port.
- Reseat the HDMI cable and repeat the volume and power tests.
- If the connection is optical, switch to HDMI ARC/eARC; optical cannot carry CEC or voice TV control.
Atmos does not appear in the Sonos app
- Confirm that the title, streaming service and subscription plan advertise Dolby Atmos.
- Check the source device’s audio output and disable any stereo-only or incompatible mode.
- Check the TV’s digital-audio output setting so it is not forcing stereo or another non-Atmos format.
- Verify the Sonos app’s Now Playing screen and TV-audio-format display while Atmos content is actively playing.
- Remove HDMI switches, adapters or extractors temporarily and connect the source and TV through the simplest direct ARC/eARC route available.
- Confirm the TV model actually provides ARC or eARC; an ordinary HDMI input cannot return Atmos to Beam Ultra.
Atmos appears intermittently
Intermittent behavior usually points to a changed source, output mode or signal route rather than the Height Level control. Recheck the currently selected app and device, confirm the TV has not reverted to stereo output, and test with intermediate HDMI equipment disconnected. Keep the direct ARC/eARC path in place while identifying which component changes the format shown in the Sonos app.

For most installations, the least complicated arrangement is Beam Ultra on the TV’s labeled ARC/eARC port, CEC enabled, TV audio set to the external receiver, and source devices connected in a way that preserves Atmos. The included HDMI cable is sufficient unless its length or condition is a problem. Verify the Atmos badge with a known compatible title, then set Height Audio according to the measured clearance above the soundbar.
When an Atmos badge is missing, diagnose the source, subscription, TV output and signal path in that order. When audio is present but controls fail, focus on CEC and the ARC/eARC connection. Optical should be reserved for televisions without a usable ARC/eARC route, because it intentionally gives up HDMI control and supported voice commands.
