The Sonos Beam Ultra is a compact soundbar with a reported 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos layout, HDMI eARC, USB-C and Bluetooth 5.3. It sits between the Beam (Gen 2) and Arc Ultra in Sonos’s lineup by size and the US review prices reported in September 2026. Its appeal is the possibility of a more enveloping soundstage in a smaller enclosure, plus integration with Sonos speakers and the Sonos 27 software platform. Whether it is worth choosing depends on your room, TV connections, appetite for optional speakers and how much you value that ecosystem.
What the Beam Ultra is—and what reviewers heard
EFTM reports that the Beam Ultra measures 750 × 105 × 65 mm and weighs 2.88 kg. Its review lists nine Class-D digital amplifiers, five tweeters and four low-profile woofers, arranged in a described 7.1.2 layout. SlashGear also reports native 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos, including two upward-firing tweeters. These are published product and review descriptions, not independent laboratory measurements.

EFTM’s reviewer found the sound larger than expected from the compact enclosure, saying it played loudly while retaining accuracy across the soundstage. In that reviewer’s setup, adding Sonos One speakers as surrounds increased the immersive effect; a subwoofer made a more noticeable difference for music and the reviewer’s bass preference. Those are individual listening impressions, not a guarantee for every room or listener.
Does it deliver Dolby Atmos in your room?
The reported 7.1.2 layout gives the Beam Ultra hardware intended to reproduce height effects, but a compatible soundtrack and a suitable room matter. SlashGear describes the upward sound reflecting from the ceiling and side-channel effects reflecting from walls. Ceiling height, room shape, speaker placement and furnishings can all affect those reflections, so the same content may sound different in different homes.
#1 Best Overall
- 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos with upward-firing drivers.
- Clear dialogue and AI-powered Speech Enhancement.
- Low-profile design blends into the room.
- Wider soundstage with clearer separation.
- Trueplay tunes sound for your room and setup.
Atmos playback also depends on the complete signal chain: the TV or streaming device, the service, the specific title and the subscription plan. A soundbar cannot add height information that is absent from the source audio. Sonos Trueplay can tune playback to room acoustics, according to the review, but should not be treated as a substitute for suitable placement or compatible content. SlashGear also describes a mode for limited overhead clearance; if height effects are a priority, check the current setup guidance for your placement before buying.
Beam Ultra vs. Beam (Gen 2) vs. Arc Ultra
The September 22, 2026 SlashGear review lists US prices of $699 for Beam Ultra, $499 for Beam (Gen 2) and $1,099 for Arc Ultra. These are dated review figures, not guaranteed current prices or prices for other regions. The same review describes the Beam (Gen 2) as supporting 5.1.2 and Arc Ultra as a larger 9.1.4 configuration.
Rank #2
- 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos with upward-firing drivers.
- Clear dialogue and AI-powered Speech Enhancement.
- Low-profile design blends into the room.
- Wider soundstage with clearer separation.
- Trueplay tunes sound for your room and setup.
| Model | US review price | Reported Atmos configuration | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beam (Gen 2) | $499, listed by SlashGear on September 22, 2026 | 5.1.2, as reported in the comparison coverage | Lower dated review price; consider it if the Ultra’s additional reported channels and features do not justify the difference for your room. |
| Beam Ultra | $699, listed by SlashGear on September 22, 2026 | 7.1.2, reported by EFTM and SlashGear | Compact middle option with upward-firing drivers; allow space for placement and reflections. |
| Arc Ultra | $1,099, listed by SlashGear on September 22, 2026 | 9.1.4, as reported in the comparison coverage | Larger, higher-priced option in this comparison; confirm its fit and current price against your room and budget. |
These channel labels describe reported configurations, not a promise that listeners will perceive a particular number of distinct sound sources. If the Beam Ultra is going on a narrow cabinet or below a low TV, measure the 750 mm width and check the clearance above it. Also factor the cost of any surrounds or subwoofer you would actually want: expansion is optional, but it changes the total system spend.

Connections and TV compatibility
EFTM and SlashGear report HDMI eARC, USB-C and Bluetooth 5.3. SlashGear also reports Wi-Fi 6, while EFTM describes Wi-Fi setup through the Sonos app. EFTM says the soundbar has no HDMI passthrough and that optical audio requires a separately sold adapter. SlashGear describes USB-C line-in with an optional adapter. Confirm the current Beam Ultra port and adapter requirements with Sonos and check your TV’s available outputs before relying on optical or USB-C.
Rank #3
- Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
- Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
- Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
- Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
- Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.
- HDMI eARC: Check that your TV has a compatible eARC connection and review its audio-output settings.
- Optical: The EFTM review says an adapter is required; verify the correct accessory and compatibility before purchase.
- HDMI passthrough: EFTM reports none, so do not plan to route another device through the soundbar.
- Setup: EFTM’s reviewer found app setup straightforward, but your network, TV and account setup can affect the process.
How Sonos 27 changes the proposition
Sonos describes Sonos 27 as a software platform spanning its products, rather than just a single soundbar feature. In a September 2026 interview, What Hi-Fi? reported Sonos’s use of “Fabric” for how products link for group playback, stereo pairing and headphone linking. These are Sonos’s names and positioning, not an independent wireless standard or a conventional desktop operating system.
Sonos’s September 8, 2026 announcement said the free Sonos 27 rollout began that day for Sonos S2 products, while noting that feature availability varies by product. At launch, Sonos identified new app navigation and portable surrounds as available. Other announced capabilities had different timing and status:
Rank #4

| Feature | Status in Sonos’s September 8, 2026 announcement |
|---|---|
| New app navigation | Available at launch |
| Portable surrounds | Available at launch |
| Sonos 27mcp | Early Access |
| Headphone linking | Early Access with Ace Ultra, announced for September 29, 2026 |
| Sonos 27voice | Planned for Early Access later in fall 2026 |
| Sonos Custom Agents | Targeted for 2027 |
The announcement’s general-availability date for Beam Ultra and Ace Ultra was September 29, 2026; that announced date has passed, but it does not establish present stock in any particular market. Check the current Sonos app, firmware and product support for feature availability rather than assuming every Sonos 27 feature is active on every device.
Adding surrounds, bass or headphones
A Beam Ultra can be used as a soundbar on its own; the additions below are ways to build a larger system, not requirements for basic TV use. SlashGear lists Era 300, Era 100, Sonos One, Sonos One SL, Sonos Five and Symfonisk Gen 2 among possible paired rear speakers, and names Sub and Sub Mini for added bass. The review also reports Sonos Play and Move 2 as portable surround options through Sonos Fabric. Support can depend on model generation, software and current pairing rules, so verify the exact combination in Sonos’s current documentation before buying.
Best Value
- All-new acoustic architecture with Sound Motion technology fills every inch of the room and precisely place sounds all around you
- Unparalleled 9.1.4 spatial audio experience with Dolby Atmos
- Ultra-clear dialogue plus Speech Enhancement, powered by AI, detects the human voice to clarify every word
- Elegant design looks great in your home and won’t distract from your entertainment
- Control with your TV remote, the Sonos app, the touch controls, Sonos Voice Control, and Amazon Alexa
For a movie-focused setup, compatible rear speakers may add a more pronounced surround field; EFTM’s reviewer reported that effect with Sonos One speakers. For music or stronger low-end emphasis, that reviewer noticed the subwoofer more. A Sonos Ace Ultra may interest buyers who want headphone linking or TV Audio Swap, but Sonos described headphone linking as Early Access in its September 2026 announcement. Check its current feature status and supported combinations before treating it as a settled part of the system.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should consider the Beam Ultra?
- Consider it if you want a relatively compact Sonos soundbar, have a suitable TV connection and value the option to add compatible speakers later.
- Compare the Beam (Gen 2) if the lower September 2026 US review price matters more than the Ultra’s reported 7.1.2 configuration.
- Compare the Arc Ultra if you have room for a larger soundbar and are willing to consider its higher dated US review price and reported 9.1.4 layout.
- Pause before buying if your TV lacks a workable connection, your placement restricts room reflections, or you expect every show to produce a convincing Atmos height effect.
At the reported $699 US review price, the Beam Ultra occupies a clear middle position: more ambitious on paper than Beam (Gen 2), below Arc Ultra in price and reported channel configuration. The available coverage supports its compact positioning and describes positive listening impressions, but does not establish a laboratory-measured performance advantage. Its value is therefore a matter of room fit, current local pricing, compatible content and whether the Sonos ecosystem is useful to you.
