Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most buyers, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the better general-purpose choice, mainly because it folds for packing and TechRadar’s comparison judges its noise cancelling marginally ahead. The Sonos Ace Ultra makes more sense if you already own compatible Sonos speakers or a soundbar and want headphone linking and home-theatre features. This is a fit-based recommendation, not a ranking from a controlled test that covers both models. The evidence is manufacturer specifications from 2026 plus two editorial comparisons, and the sections below flag where each claim comes from.
Who should buy which
- Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if you want one pair for commuting, travel and general listening, you care about packing the headphones compactly, and you do not use Sonos speakers at home.
- Choose the Sonos Ace Ultra if you already run a Sonos system, you want private listening that links to compatible Sonos products, or you watch films through a compatible Sonos soundbar and want the sound to follow the picture more closely.
- Be cautious with either pick if you need a guaranteed best-in-class noise cancelling result. None of the sources here measured both headphones under the same conditions, so no universal winner on attenuation can be stated.

Noise cancelling: what the claims do and do not show
Both companies describe adaptive noise cancelling built on multiple microphones. Sony pairs its QN3 processor with a 12-microphone system and offers ambient modes. Sonos uses ten microphones and says the Ace Ultra provides up to 2x more ANC than the original Sonos Ace at frequencies up to 65 Hz. That figure compares the Ace Ultra with an earlier Sonos model over a limited frequency range. It does not say the Ace Ultra cancels twice as much as the WH-1000XM6.

The only direct editorial judgment on this point comes from TechRadar, which describes Sony as marginally ahead on ANC. That is one reviewer’s assessment, and it should be read as a judgment rather than a measurement.

Sonos rates the Ace Ultra at up to 35 hours with ANC or Aware mode on. Its footnote specifies ANC on at moderate volume, and Sonos notes that results vary with use, settings and environment. Sony rates the WH-1000XM6 at up to 30 hours of continuous music playback with noise cancelling on, and it also says actual performance depends on settings, environmental conditions and use. The five-hour difference on paper reflects two manufacturers’ test conditions. It is not a measured gap, and you should expect real-world results to differ from both figures.

Sonos integration and home theatre
The Ace Ultra’s strongest advantage is its place inside the Sonos ecosystem. Two features matter here, and both carry conditions:
- Headphone linking lets the headphones connect to compatible Sonos products for private listening. Sonos describes this as an early-access, opt-in feature that may change, so confirm that it is available on your products and software version before you buy for it.
- TrueCinema is Sonos’s calibration feature for compatible soundbar listening. What Hi-Fi? tested an Ace Ultra with a Beam (Gen 2) on the same network and reported that TrueCinema made a film soundtrack feel more cinematic in its test room. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a benchmark.
The WH-1000XM6 has no comparable Sonos-style system linking in the sources reviewed, so for a household with no Sonos hardware, this advantage does not apply.

Portability and comfort
The WH-1000XM6 folds fully and ships with a carry case that Sony describes as more protective, which makes it easier to pack in a bag or carry-on. The Ace Ultra’s swiveling earcups fold less, so it takes more space in a bag. No comparable comfort test for both models was found, so fit and long-session comfort should be judged by trying each pair on if you can.

Calls and microphones
Sony advertises microphone optimisation for call clarity. What Hi-Fi? found that calls on the Ace Ultra were clear, but it reported that more environmental noise came through than with the WH-1000XM6 when it took a call near a busy road. That observation favours Sony for isolation during calls. It was a single reviewer’s test in one setting, so results will depend on your environment and the settings you use.

Sound quality and music
Here the editorial sources split. TechRadar judges the WH-1000XM6 more detailed and dynamic overall, and describes Sony as marginally ahead on musicality and flexibility. What Hi-Fi? describes the Ace Ultra’s presentation as rich and weighty. These are subjective judgments about listening, and they are not interchangeable with Sonos’s cinema-and-system advantages. If music is your main use, weigh the reviewers’ descriptions against how each sounds to you.
Price and where to check it
TechRadar’s comparison table lists both models at $449, £399 and AU$699. Sony’s US product page lists the WH-1000XM6 at a $459.99 MSRP, and it warns that pricing and promotions can change. The apparent difference between these figures comes from the source and date, not from a change in the product. Before buying, check the price in your market and at your retailer, and compare like with like: MSRP against MSRP, or street price against street price.

What the evidence does not establish
- No shared controlled lab dataset compares both models for measured ANC attenuation, battery endurance, microphone performance or comfort.
- Sonos’s headphone linking is early access and may change, so its availability and behaviour can differ from what is described here.
- Prices, stock and compatibility are volatile. The figures above are as published in 2026 and should be rechecked at purchase.
- Sonos lists model-specific replacement cushions. Confirm that a listing fits your exact model before you buy one.
Sonos announced the Ace Ultra on September 1, 2026. Treat the Sonos figures as company specifications and the TechRadar and What Hi-Fi? observations as reviewers’ opinions.
