Its strongest case is for listeners who want to send TV audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to headphones or try Sonos’s emerging speaker-to-headphone linking. But that ecosystem feature is still opt-in Early Access, and reviewers say some rivals remain stronger for music performance or travel convenience.

How good is the sound?
Reviews agree that the Ace Ultra improves meaningfully on the original Ace, but they do not establish it as the best-sounding premium headphone for everyone. What Hi-Fi? describes a marked sound-quality improvement while still placing it short of class leaders. TechRadar characterizes the Ultra as more open, detailed, and balanced than the original Ace, while finding that the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 can have an edge on some music qualities. What Hi-Fi? TechRadar
Sonos lists adaptive active noise cancellation, Aware mode, spatial audio, and Dolby Atmos support for compatible content and devices. Its app provides bass, mids, and treble controls in either a 3-band or 8-band EQ. Adaptive EQ is intended to account for fit-related acoustic leaks, including those caused by glasses, hair, or head movement. Lossless playback is available over USB-C or Bluetooth when the source device supports Qualcomm aptX. Sonos product page

- Sonos-designed driver for deep, rich, detailed sound.

Those capabilities make the Ace Ultra flexible on paper, but compatibility matters: Dolby Atmos needs compatible content and a compatible device, and Bluetooth lossless playback depends on aptX support at the source. The cited reviews praise the improvement without claiming a universal win in detail or soundstage.

Bluetooth listening and app setup
You do not need a Sonos speaker to listen to the Ace Ultra over Bluetooth. Sonos says the headphones can connect to an iOS or Android device, while setup in the Sonos app registers and updates them and unlocks available controls such as EQ, noise-control modes, TV Audio Swap, and headphone linking. TV Audio Swap and TrueCinema
TV Audio Swap sends sound from a compatible Sonos soundbar to the headphones. TrueCinema is designed to tune the headphone experience to a room and compatible soundbar; dynamic head tracking can be enabled in the Sonos app. These are system-dependent features, unlike ordinary Bluetooth listening. Headphone Linking is not a finished, universal feature
Sonos describes Headphone Linking as a direct connection between the Ace Ultra and compatible Sonos speakers, allowing music to move between them using the Content Key without a phone in range. It requires Wi-Fi, the Sonos app, and a compatible speaker. Sonos labels it Early Access and opt-in, and says it is offered as-is while under development, so buyers should treat it as an evolving extra rather than a guaranteed reason to purchase. What Hi-Fi? reports using Headphone Linking with a Beam (Gen 2), transferring movie audio by pressing and holding the Content Key. The reviewer also found TrueCinema created a more cinematic effect in that reviewer’s room; these are specific review observations, not assured results in every room or setup. What Hi-Fi?
How it compares with premium alternatives
The available review evidence supports a use-case decision, not a single winner across every category. TechRadar names the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 as alternatives and says they can outperform the Ace Ultra on some music qualities. It also notes that the Ace Ultra is not fully foldable and is less convenient when travel packing space is tight. TechRadar

| Priority | What the evidence suggests |
|---|---|
| Better sound than the original Sonos Ace | What Hi-Fi? and TechRadar both report a meaningful improvement, with TechRadar citing a more open, detailed, and balanced presentation. |
| Music detail and soundstage above all | TechRadar says the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 can edge the Ace Ultra on some music qualities; the cited material does not establish a single winner for every listener or track. |
| Sonos TV and speaker integration | The Ace Ultra offers TV Audio Swap, TrueCinema, and Headphone Linking; Headphone Linking remains opt-in Early Access and requires compatible Sonos equipment. |
| Compact travel packing | TechRadar flags that the Ace Ultra does not fully fold and is less convenient for constrained packing. |
| Price | Sonos lists the Ace Ultra at $449 in the United States; alternative prices and availability should be checked for the buyer’s region and purchase date. |
The comparison evidence here does not establish a consistent ranking for ANC, comfort, or battery life across these models. Sonos’s battery figures are company claims, while the cited independent reviews focus on their own listening and use observations.
Are the Sonos Ace Ultra headphones worth $449?
They make the clearest case for existing Sonos owners who will actually use TV Audio Swap or are comfortable trying Headphone Linking while it remains in Early Access. For those buyers, the system features distinguish the Ace Ultra more than Bluetooth listening alone does. For someone choosing primarily on music performance or compact travel, the reviews leave room for competing premium headphones, and the Ace Ultra’s $449 US list price is a meaningful commitment.
Choose it if Sonos soundbar integration is central to how you watch films and you value a reported sound improvement over the original Ace. Consider alternatives if you prioritize the strongest possible music performance or a headphone that packs down more compactly. Do not buy it on the assumption that you need Sonos speakers for ordinary listening, or that Early Access linking is already a mature, universally compatible feature.
