Sonos Ace Ultra Review (2026): Is Headphone Linking Worth the $449 Price?

The Sonos Ace Ultra costs $449 in the US, and it is most worth buying if you already own compatible Sonos speakers or a soundbar. Its headline feature, headphone linking, moves audio from those products to the headphones over your Wi-Fi network. Sonos calls that feature Early Access, and it has real limits: Bluetooth and AirPlay audio cannot be moved, and linked audio is lossy stereo. If you are buying headphones only for standalone listening, the premium over the $349 original Ace has to be justified by sound, noise cancelation, and battery, and those points rest mainly on one reviewer’s testing and on Sonos’s own claims.

What Sonos specifies

The figures below come from the Sonos US product page for the Ace Ultra, accessed for this article. Most are manufacturer specifications or claims. Prices and shipping estimates are US-only and can change, so confirm them on Sonos’s product page before you buy.

Headphone linking: the feature that changes the math

Headphone linking is the reason the Ace Ultra exists as a Sonos product rather than just another premium headphone. Sonos support says it moves audio that is already streaming to a compatible Sonos product over the local Wi-Fi network to the Ace Ultra, so you can continue listening on the headphones when you leave the room. Setup runs through the Sonos app on iOS or Android, as described in Sonos’s guide to setting up headphone linking. Sonos labels the feature Early Access. It is opt-in, provided as-is, and subject to change during ongoing development.

What you need before it works

  • A compatible Sonos product already set up on your system. Sonos lists the Amp, Arc, Beam, Era, Five, Play, Ray, Roam, and Move families, subject to listed conditions such as not using certain products as rear surrounds.
  • Wi-Fi coverage strong enough to hold the session. Sonos notes that weak coverage can interrupt it.
  • Audio started in the Sonos app. The supported content includes services launched from the Sonos app, line-in sources, and a local music library.
  • Only one Ace Ultra can hold an active headphone link session at a time.

What linking cannot move

Sonos’s known limitations page sets the boundaries of the feature, and they matter more than the headline suggests:

#1 Best Overall
Sonos Ace Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Over-Ear Headphones - White | Dolby Atmos | 30-Hr Battery, 3-Min Fast Charge | Spatial Audio | Lossless Audio | TV Audio Swap from Sonos Soundbars
  • HEADPHONES | Featuring Dolby Atmos.
  • SPATIAL AUDIO | Enjoy an industry-leading Dolby Atmos experience with dynamic head tracking.
  • LOSSLESS AUDIO | Stream lossless audio over Bluetooth or via USB-C.
  • ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION | World-class ANC neutralizes external sounds for maximum immersion.
  • ALL-DAY COMFORT | Bespoke fit with plush memory foam, soft vegan leather, and a design that suits all head shapes, hairstyles, and accessories.
  • Bluetooth and AirPlay audio cannot be moved through linking. The reviewer confirmed that Apple Music played over AirPlay will not work for linking.
  • Direct-control music sessions cannot be swapped. Sonos’s examples are Spotify, Amazon Music, Pandora, and Tidal when they are started directly on the speaker rather than in the Sonos app.
  • Quality is capped. A linked session is lossy stereo, and lossless and Spatial Audio quality are not supported through linking.

In practice, linking is a convenience for people who already listen through Sonos speakers. It is not a general-purpose wireless link for your phone or laptop.

TV Audio Swap is a separate feature

TV Audio Swap sends the sound from a compatible Sonos home theater speaker to Sonos headphones. It is a different system with different requirements, so do not assume a product that supports one supports the other. Sonos’s TV Audio Swap support article lists Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam (Gen 1), Beam (Gen 2), Beam Ultra, and Ray as supported home theater speakers, and allows a maximum of two Sonos headphone sets in one session.

The reviewer reported one audio cut-out during a TV Audio Swap session, and a colleague did not reproduce it. Treat that as a single observation, not a known defect.

What the reviewer observed

Billy Steele’s Engadget review, published September 22, 2026, is the most detailed independent account available for this article. It describes subjective listening, not lab testing, and his observations are his own:

Bose QuietComfort Headphones - Wireless Bluetooth Headphones, Active Over Ear Noise Cancelling and Mic, USB-C Charging, Deep Bass, Up to 24 Hours of Playtime, White Smoke
  • NOISE CANCELLING HEADPHONES: Effortlessly combines noise cancellation technology with passive features so you can shut off the outside world, quiet distractions, and take music beyond the beat
  • COMFORTABLE HEADPHONES: Plush over-ear cushions softly hug your ears, while a secure and comfortable padded band gently keeps your studio headphones in place for those extra-long listening sessions
  • 2 LISTENING MODES: These wireless Bluetooth headphones feature Quiet and Aware Modes that let you toggle between full noise cancelling or full awareness of your surroundings for seamless sound control
  • HIGH-FIDELITY AUDIO/EQ CONTROL: Supercharge your favorite tracks with high-fidelity audio and Adjustable EQ that puts you in control of the bass, mid-range, and treble for unmatched bold sound
  • ALL DAY BATTERY LIFE: Bose QuietComfort wireless headphones provide up to 24 hours of battery on a single charge, plus a 15-minute charge via USB-C gives you up to 2.5 hours of additional play time
  • Sound: better bass detail than the original Ace, and a natural-sounding Aware mode.
  • Noise cancelation: an improvement over the original Ace in his testing.
  • Calls: above-average microphone pickup.
  • Battery: after 19 hours of testing with ANC on for almost all of that time, he reported 45 percent battery remaining. That pace is roughly consistent with Sonos’s 35-hour rating under those conditions, but it is one person’s test, not a standardized measurement.
  • Linking: it worked in his setup.
  • Caveats: he calls the price high, and says the best features depend on the Sonos app and additional Sonos hardware.

His headline, “The company’s new headphones can truly be part of a Sonos system,” reflects the same point: the device is strongest inside the ecosystem. Read his praise as a specific account of one test setup, not a guarantee of how the headphones will sound in yours.

Battery life and replacement parts

Sonos says the battery and ear cushions are designed to be swapped by the owner, and it sells a Replacement Battery Kit for $25 and ear cushions for $39 on the US page. The shipping estimates on that page were September 29, 2026 for the battery kit and October 9, 2026 for the cushions. Both are estimates, and the first has already passed as of this article, so check current availability before you order. Sonos’s listing also does not confirm whether the kit and cushions are compatible with every Ace Ultra colorway, so verify model compatibility on the product page before buying.

Who should buy the Ace Ultra

Existing Sonos owners

If you already run compatible Sonos speakers, the case is strongest. Headphone linking gives you a private listening option that fits into a system you already use, and the feature is the main reason to pay the premium over the original Ace. Keep in mind that linking is Early Access and can change.

Home theater buyers

TV Audio Swap is only useful if you own one of the listed home theater speakers. If you are buying a soundbar primarily to use with these headphones, the total cost is the soundbar plus $449, which is a larger commitment than the headphones alone.

Standalone headphone shoppers

If you do not own compatible Sonos gear, you are paying $449 for sound, noise cancelation, battery, and comfort. The reviewer’s observations favor the Ace Ultra over the original Ace on those points, but the price gap is $100, and the review does not include a head-to-head test against competing premium headphones. Bose SimpleSync is named as a nearby private-listening alternative, but the available evidence does not establish how it compares, so avoid assuming the Ace Ultra is the stronger choice over it or other premium models.

Sonos states that the Ace Ultra’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi operation does not require a Sonos speaker. The Sonos purchase only becomes relevant if you want linking or TV Audio Swap.
