To link your Sonos Ace Ultra headphones to your Sonos system, open the Sonos app, set up the headphones, and then choose System > Link to your system from the headphone settings. Once linked, you can take music that is already playing on a compatible Sonos speaker and move it to your headphones with a single long press of the Content Key, without searching for the song or restarting it. Sonos calls this feature headphone linking, and as of October 7, 2026 it is still in Early Access, so the steps, compatibility list, and behavior described here may change with software updates.
What headphone linking does
Headphone linking is a Wi-Fi-based audio handoff. Sonos describes it this way in its setup guide: “Headphone linking provides you the ability to pull audio already streaming to a compatible Sonos product to Sonos Ace Ultra via the user’s local WiFi network.” (Sonos Support, “Set up headphone linking”)

The headphones receive the audio over your home network rather than over a direct Bluetooth connection, which is why the feature depends on your Wi-Fi and on a compatible Sonos product staying active. In its September 15, 2026 announcement in the Sonos Community, Sonos Staff member Andrew K put the user benefit simply: “Headphone linking lets you play Sonos audio on your Ace Ultra: start playback right from the Sonos App, or if something’s already playing on a speaker, pull it over to your headphones with a press and hold.” (Sonos Community announcement)

What you need before you start
- A Sonos Ace Ultra that is already set up in the Sonos app. The app runs on iOS or Android, and the headphones must be connected to the phone during setup.
- At least one compatible Sonos product connected to the same Sonos system. The list is in the compatibility section below.
- A working Wi-Fi connection in the home. Sonos requires Wi-Fi for linking.
- A Sonos system below the 32-product limit. A system at that limit cannot set up the link.
If you are not sure the headphones are set up yet, Sonos’s Set up your Sonos Ace Ultra guide covers that step first.
How to link Ace Ultra to your system
- In the Sonos app on iOS or Android, confirm that Ace Ultra is set up and connected to your phone.
- Open Settings.
- In the Headphones section, select Ace Ultra.
- Choose System > Link to your system, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- If the app detects a compatible soundbar, the setup flow also includes TV Audio Swap setup. TV Audio Swap is covered in its own section below.
Full setup steps are in Sonos’s “Set up headphone linking” article.
Moving audio between a speaker and your headphones
Once linking is set up, you can start a handoff from either side. The headphones can also be chosen as an output directly in the app.

Pulling audio to the headphones
Press and hold the Content Key on Ace Ultra. Sonos says a press of up to five seconds triggers the swap, and that the nearest compatible product is the one targeted. Audio stops on the Sonos product and begins playing through the headphones. If you start the swap from the app instead, selecting Ace Ultra as the output from an active Sonos product, the app-initiated swap may take up to five seconds.

What plays and what does not
The feature moves audio that originates inside the Sonos system. Sonos documents the following eligibility rules.
| Audio source | Eligible for headphone linking? | Notes from Sonos documentation |
|---|---|---|
| Music started in the Sonos app | Yes | The main use case for the feature. |
| Line-in | Yes | Audio from a device connected to a Sonos product’s line-in. |
| Local music library | Yes | Music stored on a local network source. |
| Sonos Voice Control playback | Yes | Playback started with Sonos’s own voice control. |
| Bluetooth | No | Not eligible. |
| AirPlay | No | Not eligible. |
| Music-service playback started through direct control | No | Not eligible. |
| Audio started by Alexa or Google Assistant | No | Not eligible. |
Because voice assistant support is disabled once a linked session begins, use the Sonos app or the Content Key to control playback during a session. Details are in Sonos’s known limitations article.

Those products are not supported as rear surrounds in a home theater setup. Check the asterisks in Sonos’s setup guide before you plan a home theater layout around the feature.
Limits to know
- One active session at a time. A single Ace Ultra can have one active headphone link session.
- A compatible product must stay active. If every compatible product drops out, the session ends.
- Wi-Fi is required. Weak Wi-Fi can cause audio dropouts.
- Lossy stereo only. Linking uses lossy stereo compression. It does not support lossless audio or Spatial Audio.
- No linked-content display on iOS. The iOS Live Activity does not show the content being linked.
- No voice assistant control. Voice assistant support is disabled once a session begins.
- Product limit. A system at the 32-product limit cannot set up the link.
Sonos documents these limits on its known limitations page. Because the feature is in Early Access, its behavior may change in a future update.

TV Audio Swap is related but is not headphone linking. It routes home theater audio from a compatible Sonos soundbar to Ace or Ace Ultra. Sonos documents the following soundbars for this feature: Arc, Arc SL, Arc Ultra, Beam (Gen 1), Beam (Gen 2), Beam Ultra, and Ray.
- Up to two Sonos headphone sets can join one TV Audio Swap session.
- Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking settings are available.
- Dynamic Head Tracking is disabled while two headphones are connected and is re-enabled when one disconnects.

Wired listening is a different path
If you want to listen to a wired analog source, Sonos’s wired audio guide covers that setup. The Sonos Ace Aux Cable is the accessory for wired listening, but it does not enable headphone linking.
Is it worth using?
For listeners who already run music through a compatible Sonos speaker, the feature removes the step of finding a song again when you leave the room with your headphones on. The trade-offs are the ones Sonos lists: lossy stereo, a dependence on Wi-Fi, and a short list of supported products. If your listening is mostly Spatial Audio or lossless, or your speakers are outside the supported list, the feature is not a fit.
Sonos’s support pages reflect behavior as of October 7, 2026. Check the setup and limitations pages before you rely on the feature for a specific setup.
