What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The original Sonic the Hedgehog 3 soundtrack is the music heard in the 1994 Mega Drive/Genesis game. It is not the later MIDI-based music from Sonic & Knuckles Collection for PC, and it is not the adapted or recreated audio used in parts of Sonic Origins. Fan arrangements and modifications are separate community works, not Sega soundtrack releases.
The most important complication is authorship. Reporting has described involvement by Michael Jackson, keyboardist Brad Buxer and former Sega executive Roger Hector, but Sega has never officially confirmed the details, and Jackson is not credited on an officially released version. Treat that story as reported testimony rather than a confirmed, track-by-track Sega credit.

What is the original Sonic 3 soundtrack?
For comparison purposes, “original” means the audio generated by the 1994 Mega Drive/Genesis cartridge. That console version is the baseline against which later arrangements and recreations should be judged. A soundtrack album, a PC port, or a modern compilation can contain related music without containing the same original game audio.

Its music is part of the cartridge software and is produced through the console’s sound hardware. That distinction matters because later releases could preserve the melodies while changing the sequencing, samples, instrumentation or playback behavior.
#1 Best Overall
There is no reliable basis in the available reporting for claiming that Michael Jackson composed every Sonic 3 track, or for assigning a definitive author to each cue. The historical question is more complicated than a simple composer label.
What is established about the disputed authorship?
The Guardian reported statements from Brad Buxer, a keyboardist and Jackson collaborator, and from former Sega executive Roger Hector describing Jackson’s involvement. Buxer said, “Michael called me at the time for help on this project, and that’s what I did.” That is testimony about his participation, not an official Sega credit.
Exclaim! and other reporting have noted that Sega has not officially confirmed the story. Jackson is not credited in an officially released version of the game. The careful conclusion is therefore: people connected with the project have described Jackson-related work, but the public record does not establish a complete, official, track-by-track authorship list.

Why is the music different in Sonic Origins?
Sonic Origins, released in 2022, does not use an untouched copy of the Genesis soundtrack for every Sonic 3 passage. Sega’s Sonic social media manager Katie Chrzanowski explained in a video Q&A, as quoted by Exclaim!, that “we can’t use all of the original sounds from the Sega Genesis version of the game.” She said Jun Senoue adapted the original music and worked to reproduce it with the same sound chip, using his own digital audio tape collection to make the result as faithful as possible.
That wording describes an adaptation and recreation process, not simple file reuse. The practical result for players is that Sonic Origins contains arrangements or recreations in portions of Sonic 3. Even when a melody and overall structure are familiar, the sound of a passage can differ from the 1994 cartridge.
Why could Sega not simply copy all of the old audio?
GameSpot, quoting Sega creative officer Takashi Iizuka, reported the broader preservation problem: “When we’re going back and trying to recreate all these games from 30 plus years ago, you get a lot of old data that’s not really usable.” That statement helps explain why a modern compilation may require reconstruction rather than a direct transfer of every historical asset.
The public explanations do not provide a complete, authoritative track-by-track inventory of every changed cue. It is therefore more accurate to say that portions were replaced or recreated than to publish a definitive list that has not been established. Sonic Origins should be treated as a modern presentation with adapted music, not as a bit-perfect Genesis soundtrack.

What is Sonic & Knuckles Collection’s role?
The PC Sonic & Knuckles Collection used MIDI-based arrangements for some music. MIDI arrangements can reproduce a composition while changing the instruments and playback data, so they should not be conflated with the original Mega Drive/Genesis audio.

Retrospective reporting says that some of these PC arrangements later served as source material for replacements in Sonic Origins. That relationship explains why listeners may hear similarities between the two releases. It does not make the PC MIDI arrangements identical to the original console tracks, and it does not mean every Origins cue came from the PC collection.
How to identify the PC arrangement in a comparison
- Identify the release first: a PC collection is not the 1994 cartridge.
- Describe the material as a MIDI-based arrangement where that is what the release contains.
- Do not label a later arrangement “the original Genesis soundtrack” merely because the melody is unchanged.
- When discussing Origins, say that some replacement material has a relationship to the PC arrangements, while avoiding an unsupported claim that the relationship covers every track.
Did Michael Jackson compose Sonic 3 music?
The safest answer is that published reporting supports claims of Jackson-related involvement, but Sega has not officially confirmed the details. Brad Buxer’s statement and Roger Hector’s reported comments are evidence of testimony from people associated with the project. They are not the same as a formal Sega credit or a verified list of which person wrote which track.
Jackson is not credited in an officially released version of Sonic 3. That absence does not prove that the reported collaboration did not happen, but it does mean a reader should not be told that Sega officially credited Jackson, or that every piece of music was composed by him.

Use precise language when discussing the controversy: “reporting describes Jackson’s involvement” is supportable; “Jackson composed the entire soundtrack” is not. The same qualification applies to attempts to assign individual cues without an official documentation trail.

Which Sonic 3 version has the original music?
Choose the Mega Drive/Genesis game when “original music” means the 1994 console audio. Sonic Origins is not the right answer if your requirement is that every Sonic 3 sound remain unchanged. The PC Sonic & Knuckles Collection is also not the original audio because its relevant material is MIDI-based.
Decision guide
- Authentic 1994 sound: use the original Mega Drive/Genesis release.
- Modern official compilation: Sonic Origins provides a current Sega package, but portions of its Sonic 3 music are adaptations or recreations.
- Interest in historical PC arrangements: examine Sonic & Knuckles Collection as a separate MIDI-based version.
- Alternative interpretations: fan arrangements or modifications may offer new mixes, but their contents and licensing must be checked project by project.
Because no complete, authoritative track-by-track change list is established here, a claim that one modern release contains “all” original cues should be treated cautiously unless the edition’s own documentation proves it.

There is a related physical arranged album listed as Sonic & Knuckles / Sonic the Hedgehog 3, catalog number ALCA-5015. A specialist discography listing identifies it as an arranged release. That listing does not establish that the disc contains the original Genesis game audio, nor does it establish current retailer availability.
Consequently, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3 soundtrack CD” can refer to an arranged album rather than a CD transfer of the cartridge soundtrack. Check the exact edition, catalog number and track listing before buying. Do not assume that a disc bearing Sonic 3 in its title is the same thing as the original in-game music.

What counts as a fan-made Sonic 3 soundtrack?
Fan work can mean several different things: a standalone arrangement, a remix, a mod that changes the game’s music, or a broader game modification. These categories should not be collapsed into “the soundtrack,” because each may use different files, permissions and distribution terms.
No specific fan project’s release status, licensing or complete track contents are established here. If you are evaluating one, read the project’s own release notes and determine whether it is an audio arrangement, a mod requiring the original game, or a modified game build. A community upload is not an official Sega release, even when it recreates the Genesis sound closely.
Questions to ask before using a fan version
- Does the creator identify it as an arrangement, remix, mod or game modification?
- Does it require legally obtained original game data?
- Are the release notes clear about which tracks were changed?
- Does the project provide permission for listening, redistribution or commercial use?
- Is the download an audio release or software that modifies a game?
Avoid treating unauthorized music files as archival proof of what an official release contains. For historical comparison, document the fan project separately from the Genesis, PC and Origins versions.

- Name the platform and edition. Record whether you are discussing the 1994 Mega Drive/Genesis game, the PC Sonic & Knuckles Collection, Sonic Origins or a community project.
- State the audio lineage. Use “original console audio,” “MIDI-based arrangement,” “Jun Senoue adaptation/recreation” or “fan arrangement” rather than the vague word “remastered.”
- Separate confirmed changes from impressions. The available reporting supports changes to portions of Sonic 3 in Origins, but not a complete public inventory of every altered track.
- Keep authorship claims qualified. Report Jackson and Buxer’s described involvement while noting Sega’s lack of official confirmation.
- Check physical-media identity. If a listing mentions ALCA-5015, treat it as the arranged album entry and verify the edition rather than calling it the original game soundtrack.
Bottom line for listeners and collectors
The 1994 Mega Drive/Genesis release is the answer when “original Sonic 3 soundtrack” means the console’s actual game audio. Sonic & Knuckles Collection presents MIDI-based arrangements, and Sonic Origins presents a modern Sega version in which portions were adapted or recreated by Jun Senoue. Fan projects are independent interpretations whose contents and legal status must be checked individually.
Michael Jackson’s reported connection remains an attribution dispute, not an officially confirmed Sega credit. The related ALCA-5015 disc is an arranged album listing, not proof of an original-audio CD. Keeping those distinctions clear prevents the most common mix-ups between composition, arrangement, game version and physical release.
