Choose Mario Kart World if you want connected courses, a world to explore in Free Roam, Nintendo characters, and online races for up to 24 players—and have or plan to buy a Nintendo Switch 2.
The key difference is what each game puts at the center: CrossWorlds changes the setting during a race, while Mario Kart World links its courses across a larger world. These are feature-based recommendations, not claims about which game handles or performs better.

How the races are structured
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds shifts worlds mid-race
CrossWorlds uses Travel Rings to send racers into another world during a race. SEGA describes the game as racing “across land, sea, air, and space”; the Travel Rings make that change of setting part of the race concept. SEGA’s CrossWorlds announcement outlines the feature.
Mario Kart World connects courses with roads
Mario Kart World takes a connected-world approach: roads link courses across the game’s larger world. Nintendo’s product listing frames the idea as “The whole world is your racetrack.” Nintendo’s Mario Kart World listing describes the game and its modes.

What you can do beyond a standard race
CrossWorlds emphasizes racing modes and customization
Nintendo lists Grand Prix, Race Park, World Match, and Time Trials for CrossWorlds. Its listing also describes 45 unique original vehicles and 70 different gadgets, giving customization a prominent role. Nintendo’s CrossWorlds listing provides these feature details.
Mario Kart World adds Free Roam
Nintendo lists Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam. Free Roam gives players an option to explore at their own pace rather than treating every session as a race. It is the clearer fit if roaming around a connected game world is part of what you want from a kart racer.

Online play: compare the listed player caps, not quality
Nintendo lists CrossWorlds World Match for up to 12 players and Mario Kart World online play for up to 24. Those are stated player-cap figures, not evidence that one game’s online experience is more enjoyable, stable, or competitive. Nintendo says Mario Kart World requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features; check the current terms for your country before subscribing. CrossWorlds’ listing and Mario Kart World’s listing describe their respective online offerings and requirements.

CrossWorlds is available across more platform families
SEGA announced CrossWorlds for PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Nintendo also lists a Nintendo Switch 2 edition. SEGA announced the Switch 2 physical edition for March 26, 2026; that announcement is specific to that edition, so check local availability and the package edition when buying. SEGA’s Switch 2 physical-edition announcement gives that date, while SEGA’s game announcement lists the broader platform release.

Mario Kart World requires Nintendo Switch 2
Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo lists a June 5, 2025 release date and TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes on the system. If you do not own a Switch 2, the console is part of the decision—not an optional platform choice.
Mario Kart World’s current content includes a post-launch update
Nintendo’s September 9, 2026 notice says version 1.8.0 added ten courses inspired by Super Mario Kart to certain modes and two additional Knockout Tour routes. The notice describes additions to specified modes, not a blanket claim that every course is available in every mode. See Nintendo’s update notice for the details.
