Yes. JackTulli’s fan-made Halo 64 brings Halo: Combat Evolved multiplayer to Nintendo 64 hardware, including its maps, weapons, physics, vehicles, HUD and game modes. It is a locally built project using your own Xbox game files—not a downloadable copy of the retail game—and its main release is multiplayer rather than the complete campaign.
What Halo 64 actually is
Halo 64 uses the halo-ce-universal decompilation for core gameplay systems, then adds an N64 renderer, menus, HUD and sound layer through libdragon and tiny3d. This is more than a cosmetic demake. The port carries over Halo objects, collision, weapons, physics, first-person weapon models, pathfinding and game rules, while converting map data from the owner’s Xbox copy during the build.

The project targets both emulation and original Nintendo 64 consoles. On real hardware, it requires the Expansion Pak, which raises system memory to 8 MB. A compatible flash cartridge loads the resulting .z64 image; the project documents the ares emulator as its software option.

- XBOX PLAY ANYWHERE — Play across XBOX Series X|S and Windows PCs at no additional cost, with shared progress and achievements across supported devices.
Bots can fill matches at four skill levels. The pause scoreboard can track as many as 12 participants, which is useful when human players and AI opponents share a match. Firefight adds wave-based encounters on the multiplayer maps: Grunts, Jackals and Elites attack one to four players, who share a pool of lives across four difficulty settings.
Familiar Halo presentation
The port preserves shields, health, ammunition and motion-sensor elements in the HUD, along with weapon and vehicle sounds, menu music, multiple control schemes and N64 Rumble Pak support. Settings are stored through the console’s EEPROM. These details make the project feel like a functioning Halo ruleset rather than a short technology demonstration.
The campaign exists, but it is not finished
The headline needs an important qualification: the principal release is multiplayer. The repository also documents a separate campaign cartridge built around the “Halo” level. It includes Marines and Covenant with simplified AI, checkpoints, four difficulty levels and the Warthog.

That campaign build is explicitly incomplete. It has no cutscenes or scripted sequences, and the level’s second BSP section has not yet been included. Anyone expecting the full Xbox story, mission progression and cinematic presentation should treat this as an early technical preview rather than a complete campaign replacement.
How an Xbox game fits on N64 hardware
| System | CPU | Memory |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 with Expansion Pak | 93.75 MHz VR4300 | 8 MB |
| Original Xbox | 733 MHz | 64 MB |
Those figures, recorded in the project’s 2026 repository documentation, show why this port requires substantial engineering. Halo 64 converts map data to a big-endian format, streams models, textures and animations from the cartridge, and uses reduced texture formats. Simulation work is trimmed or scheduled: Halo’s game logic still advances at 30 ticks per second, but distant or inactive objects and AI update less often to preserve processing time.
Performance is not a single fixed number. It changes with the map, the number of split-screen views and the bot count. The project includes an FPS-counter setting instead of publishing one universal benchmark, so claims about a constant frame rate should be treated cautiously.

- Control a character during massive firefights as you eliminate as many Covenant soldiers as possible
- Engage in guerilla warfare against the enemy, using whatever is at your disposal on the station
- Use your tactics skills to command squads and eliminate the enemy
- Role-based team & multiplayer combat with over 25 characters onscreen at a time
- A wide variety of vehicles & locations designed in perfect detail
A renderer rebuilt for the console
The N64 renderer uses tiny3d batches, baked lighting, culling and per-view HUD recording. A platform layer supplies N64-specific input, rendering, particles, sound, animation streaming, menus and exception behavior required by the decompiled game code. Together, those systems replace Xbox assumptions while retaining Halo’s recognizable interactions.

What you need to build and play it
| Requirement | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
| Your own Xbox copy or image of Halo: Combat Evolved | The builder converts the maps locally; retail game data is not included in the repository. |
| Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak | Original-console play uses the project’s 8 MB memory target. |
| Compatible N64 flash cartridge or accurate emulator | Loads the built .z64 ROM; ares is the documented emulator. |
| Build environment | The project provides a Windows ROM Builder and Linux/WSL build instructions. |
The source build produces a ROM of roughly 63 MB, so storage and flash-cartridge compatibility matter. The practical workflow is to supply your own legally obtained game files, generate the image locally and run that image. The project’s README says the resulting ROM should be kept by the person who built it rather than redistributed as a prepacked retail-game download.
Build workflow
- Prepare the game data. Start with your own Xbox copy or image of Halo: Combat Evolved; the repository does not provide the retail assets.
- Choose a build route. Windows users can use the supplied ROM Builder. Linux users can follow the project’s Linux or WSL instructions.
- Convert the maps. The build process transforms the Xbox map data into the N64-oriented format and packages streamed models, textures and animations.
- Build the ROM. The source build outputs an approximately 63 MB
.z64image. - Run it. Open the image in ares or load it through a compatible N64 flash cartridge. Real-console use requires the Expansion Pak.
What this port proves—and what it does not
Halo launched on Xbox with substantially more CPU speed and memory than the N64. Getting recognizable multiplayer onto the older machine therefore depends on streaming assets, lowering or adapting render detail, and reducing update frequency for less important objects and bots. The result is a technically ambitious, playable N64 multiplayer port, not a one-for-one Xbox conversion.

- Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
- This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.
It also is not evidence that the complete original campaign now runs on N64. The separate campaign cartridge demonstrates the direction of the work, but its missing cutscenes, scripts and second BSP section define its current limits.

Can Halo: Combat Evolved run on an actual Nintendo 64?
Halo 64 is designed to run on original hardware with an Expansion Pak and a way to load the built ROM. You still need to create that ROM from your own Xbox game files.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs this the full Halo campaign?
No. The main release is multiplayer. A separate, incomplete campaign cartridge contains the “Halo” level with simplified AI, checkpoints, four difficulties and the Warthog, but no cutscenes or scripts and no second BSP section.
Best Value
- Master Chief can now wield two weapons at once, board Covenant vehicles and steal Covenant weapons like the incredible double energy sword
- Lead an all-new unit of super-soldiers, the ODST -- tougher, badder and deadlier versions of your old comrades
- New enemies, allies and surprises around every corner - intense combat action with enhanced AI and real-time lighting
- Immense single-player action with maassive landscapes and huge cities to explore and defend - destructible and interactive environments
- Take the action online with your Xbox Live and switch sides, to become a Covenant Elite!
Does it support four-player multiplayer?
Yes. Multiplayer supports one to four players in split screen, each using a separate controller. Bots can occupy additional slots, with four selectable skill levels.
Is there an official prebuilt ROM to download?
The project’s documented workflow is to build locally from your own Xbox files. Its README says retail game data is absent from the repository and that builders should keep the ROM they create to themselves.
