Yes, an Apple TV 4K can play a Blu-ray-derived file with a Dolby TrueHD Atmos soundtrack through a reported software workaround—but it does not pass the original TrueHD bitstream to your receiver. A compatible tvOS player decodes the track, and the Apple TV sends the result as Dolby MAT or multichannel uncompressed PCM. Your receiver may still display “Atmos,” because that label describes the rendered output, not proof that untouched TrueHD arrived.
What the workaround actually does
Dolby TrueHD with Atmos is the lossless audio format commonly found on UHD Blu-ray discs. Dolby Digital Plus with Atmos is the compressed format used by many streaming services. The reported Apple TV method targets a local Blu-ray-derived file, not the physical disc itself.

The player performs the important step that Apple TV does not provide as a standard output mode: it decodes the TrueHD/Atmos soundtrack before handing audio to tvOS. Apple TV then places that decoded object-based audio into its supported HDMI audio pipeline, normally Dolby MAT or multichannel PCM. An Atmos-capable AV receiver or soundbar can render the height channels from that signal.
That is why an AVR can show an “Atmos” indicator while the transport is not TrueHD. The display identifies the program or output mode it has recognized; it is not a packet-level confirmation that the original lossless bitstream was forwarded unchanged.

TrueHD bitstreaming versus decoded Dolby MAT
| Requirement | UHD Blu-ray player | Apple TV 4K workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Source | Physical UHD Blu-ray disc or compatible disc playback | Blu-ray-derived local file opened by a tvOS player |
| Where TrueHD is decoded | Usually in the receiver or player, depending on configuration | Inside the playback application before output |
| Signal sent over HDMI | Can be the disc’s Dolby TrueHD Atmos bitstream | Dolby MAT and/or uncompressed multichannel PCM carrying the decoded result |
| What the receiver display proves | A TrueHD label can indicate direct bitstream reception | An “Atmos” label alone does not prove untouched TrueHD |
| Library convenience | Best for discs and direct-format fidelity | Convenient for a curated local-file library, subject to app support |
Apple’s documented Apple TV formats include Dolby Atmos and Dolby MAT, but do not list Dolby TrueHD bitstream output. Apple describes the device as decoding the best format for the connected equipment and sending uncompressed audio to the speakers. That wording fits the workaround: the audio can remain lossless in content, while the transport format changes before it reaches the receiver.
Equipment and wiring you need
Apple TV and playback software
You need an Apple TV 4K and a tvOS media player that can open your Blu-ray-derived file and decode its TrueHD/Atmos track. Codec support is application-specific, so confirm that the player supports both the container you use and Dolby TrueHD with Atmos. Local-file support is not automatically equivalent across every tvOS app.

Atmos playback hardware
The downstream AV receiver or soundbar must accept Dolby MAT or multichannel PCM over HDMI and be configured with an Atmos-capable speaker layout. A receiver that supports Atmos only from a particular input or mode may still reject the Apple TV’s PCM/MAT path, so check its input-format and speaker-configuration menus.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Apple’s supported arrangement is:
- Connect Apple TV 4K directly to an HDMI input on the Atmos-capable receiver or soundbar.
- Connect that receiver or soundbar’s HDMI output to the television.
- Select the receiver input used by Apple TV and verify that the receiver is set to accept bitstream/PCM or automatic audio input rather than forcing stereo.
Direct routing is the safest choice when the goal is high-bandwidth Atmos audio. Apple warns that its high-bandwidth Atmos form does not work over ordinary ARC connections. Second-generation and later Apple TV 4K models can use eARC to receive full-resolution audio from a compatible television or HDMI device, but eARC only works when the television and the rest of the chain support it. ARC and eARC are therefore not interchangeable troubleshooting assumptions.

Apple TV settings to check
- Open Settings on Apple TV.
- Go to Video and Audio (the exact wording can vary slightly by tvOS release).
- Leave Audio Format set to Auto unless compatibility testing shows that your receiver needs a manual selection.
- Turn on Dolby Atmos when that option appears.
- Enable Continuous Audio Connection if you want seamless transitions between compatible programs and your equipment handles it correctly.
Continuous Audio has an important diagnostic trap. Apple says older receivers might indicate an Atmos signal while the audio is actually playing in its original stereo, multichannel or Atmos form. Treat the receiver’s badge as a clue, not as a definitive identification of the underlying TrueHD transport.
How to test whether your setup is working
1. Confirm the file and track
Use a known Blu-ray-derived file with a Dolby TrueHD track that contains Atmos metadata. If the file has only a lossy Dolby Digital Plus track, you are testing a different format and cannot use the result to judge the TrueHD workaround.

2. Select the TrueHD/Atmos stream in the player
Some files contain multiple audio tracks. Choose the TrueHD/Atmos stream explicitly rather than leaving the player on a commentary, stereo or compatibility track. App menus and labels differ, so verify the selected codec in the player’s information panel where available.

Look for Dolby MAT, PCM, or an Atmos program indication, depending on the receiver. Seeing Atmos is consistent with successful object-based rendering, but it does not establish that TrueHD was bitstreamed unchanged. Seeing ordinary stereo or a reduced channel count points to a player, HDMI, receiver-input or speaker-layout problem.
4. Compare with a known-good Atmos source
Use another Atmos source that your receiver already handles correctly. This separates an installation problem from a limitation in the local-file player. If streaming Atmos works but the local TrueHD file does not, investigate the application’s decoder and output mode first.

- The receiver shows stereo: Recheck the selected audio track, leave Apple TV Audio Format on Auto, and make sure the receiver input accepts multichannel PCM/MAT.
- The receiver shows Atmos but playback sounds like stereo: Disable or test Continuous Audio Connection and verify the program’s channel information; Apple specifically warns that older receivers can display Atmos while the original audio is stereo or another format.
- No Atmos option appears on Apple TV: Confirm the receiver or soundbar is connected and recognized as Atmos-capable, and check the HDMI chain rather than relying on a television’s ordinary ARC return.
- Video works but audio drops out: Try direct Apple TV-to-receiver wiring, replace suspect HDMI cables with certified high-speed models, and test whether the receiver supports the Apple TV’s MAT/PCM output at the selected video mode.
- HDR or Dolby Vision stops working through the receiver: Some receivers or soundbars accept Atmos audio but not every HDR or Dolby Vision format. You may need to choose between routing Apple TV through the audio device for the simplest audio path and routing it through the display for video compatibility, using the display’s eARC path only when the full chain supports it.
- The app refuses the file or plays without Atmos: Codec and container handling vary by tvOS player. A different compatible player may be required, and the file must contain the original TrueHD/Atmos stream rather than a converted track.
Which approach is right for a Blu-ray library?
| If your priority is… | Choose… | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Direct, unchanged Dolby TrueHD Atmos from discs | A dedicated UHD Blu-ray player connected to the AVR | It can transmit the disc’s TrueHD Atmos bitstream over HDMI. |
| One interface for local files and streaming apps | Apple TV 4K with a compatible tvOS player | The decoded/MAT route is convenient, but app codec support varies. |
| Minimal HDMI uncertainty | Apple TV directly into the Atmos receiver or soundbar | This follows Apple’s documented high-bandwidth wiring recommendation. |
| Television-centered switching | Apple TV through a compatible eARC setup | Works only when the television, Apple TV generation and audio device all support the required eARC path. |
The practical conclusion is straightforward: the hack can make a local TrueHD Atmos file render through an Apple TV 4K, but it changes the transport to decoded Dolby MAT or multichannel PCM. If your non-negotiable requirement is untouched TrueHD bitstreaming from a disc, use a UHD Blu-ray player. If your priority is convenient access to a local library and you accept application-level decoding, the Apple TV route can be a useful alternative—provided the player, HDMI wiring and receiver all support the same output path.
