Someone Could Have Opened an Account in Your Name—Here’s How to Check

If you suspect someone opened an account using your identity, contact the company’s fraud department and check the reporting system for that kind of account. For credit accounts, review all three credit reports; for a new checking account, request your free ChexSystems report. Then report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and use its recovery plan to guide the next steps. This guidance is for U.S. consumers.

What to do first

  1. Contact the company named on the account. Ask for its fraud department. Explain that the account is not yours and ask the company to close or freeze it. Request written confirmation that you are not liable and that the account has been removed from your credit report, if it was reported there. Keep dated notes of calls and copies of messages.
  2. Secure affected sign-ins. Change passwords and PINs for accounts involved. If you reused any exposed password or PIN elsewhere, change it there too.
  3. Check your credit reports. Get free reports from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com. The FTC says consumers can check reports weekly for free. Look for unfamiliar accounts and transactions.
  4. Place a fraud alert or credit freeze. These are free options that can make it harder for someone to open additional credit in your name; the differences are explained below.
  5. Report the identity theft. Use IdentityTheft.gov or call 1-877-438-4338. The FTC says the information you provide generates an Identity Theft Report and a personal recovery plan. If you do not create an account on the site, save or print both before leaving the page; the site warns they may not be accessible afterward.

Check the system that matches the account

Credit card, loan, or other credit account

Review all three nationwide credit reports and contact the creditor listed on the unfamiliar account. If the fraudulent information appears on a report, an FTC Identity Theft Report can support a request to have the bureaus block it. The FTC explains the process in its identity-theft rights guidance.

Checking account

Request a free report from ChexSystems and review it for unfamiliar activity. Contact each financial institution where a new account appears. The FTC’s checking-account identity-theft steps describe this process.

Phone or utility account

Contact the phone or utility provider’s fraud department. For phone-related accounts, the FTC’s recovery guidance also points to the National Consumer Telecom and Utilities Exchange (NCTUE) data report. If a provider does not resolve a telecom problem, the FTC guide identifies an FCC complaint route.

Fraud alert or credit freeze: which should you use?

Both are free, but they work differently. A fraud alert tells businesses to take extra steps to verify your identity before issuing new credit. A freeze restricts access to your credit report unless you lift or remove it.

Option Duration Who can use it Where to request it Effect on new credit applications
Initial fraud alert One year Available free to consumers Contact one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two Businesses must take extra steps to verify your identity before issuing credit
Extended fraud alert Seven years Identity-theft victims with an FTC Identity Theft Report Request it from a credit bureau Businesses must take extra steps to verify your identity before issuing credit
Credit freeze Until you lift or remove it Available free to anyone Request it separately from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus Restricts access to your credit report unless you lift or remove the freeze

If you apply for credit while a freeze is in place, you may need to lift it so a lender can access your report. The FTC’s recovery steps and rights guidance explain these tools.

SaiTech IT 5 Pack RFID Blocking Card for Credit Debit ID Card, Black
  • SECURE YOUR WALLET FROM e-PICKPOCKETING: Prevent potential identity and financial theft through your contactless cards. This is the simplest and most effective prevention solution! Block RFID and NFC signals, protect your personal information, and enjoy peace of mind wherever your travels or business take you.
  • JAMMING CHIP: An antenna and jamming chip makes up the main components of the card. The antenna will sense incoming radio waves and draw power for the chip to create a jamming signal. Lifetime usage as the card does not require battery.

  • ULTRA-THIN & COMPACT: At the size of a standard credit card and at only 0.03” thick, the card will fit into any wallet, purse or card case. Keep your wallet compact with no added bulk from this card. Best for travel, business, and everyday use.
  • TEST THE CARD: Test the card is working at your local supermarket. At the self-service checkout machines, combine the card and a contactless card on the payment reader. Payment with the contactless card will be blocked and an error message should occur on the reader.

Use your Identity Theft Report to dispute records and request evidence

Send the FTC Identity Theft Report, identification, and a clear description of the fraudulent information to a credit bureau when asking it to block that information. You can also ask the business involved for records related to the identity theft, such as applications or transaction records. The FTC provides sample letters for these requests. Keep copies of letters and notes of calls.

Secure the accounts the person might use next

Prioritize email, banking, and payment accounts. Use a unique, strong password for each account and enable two-factor authentication wherever it is offered. The FTC recommends authenticator apps or security keys over codes sent by text or email when those safer options are available. A password manager is one option the FTC identifies for generating and remembering unique passwords. See its guides to two-factor authentication and strong passwords and account protection.

A physical security key is optional, and only useful for accounts that support it. The FTC calls security keys the strongest method of two-factor authentication because they do not use credentials hackers can steal. A key can help protect compatible logins, but it will not identify who opened a fraudulent account, remove that account, or replace contacting the institution and filing reports.

What an unfamiliar account does—and does not—tell you

The FTC says that accounts in your name that you do not recognize could be a sign of identity theft. Treat one as a reason to investigate promptly, not as proof of who opened it or how it happened. Verify the account with the named company and check the relevant reports before drawing conclusions.
