Some retailers are stepping back from selling Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses over privacy concerns, but the product has not been broadly withdrawn or banned. On 2 October 2026, Dutch eyewear chain Hans Anders suspended sales in the Netherlands and Belgium. Other retailers continue to sell or demonstrate the glasses, leaving availability dependent on the retailer and country.
Why are stores stopping sales of Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
The immediate concern is covert recording. Because the glasses have a camera but look like ordinary eyewear, people nearby may not realize when the wearer is capturing images or video.
Hans Anders said it suspended sales in the Netherlands and Belgium because of growing privacy concerns. Separately, online-abuse group Offlimits urged Meta and Ray-Ban owner EssilorLuxottica to remove the glasses voluntarily until surreptitious recording can be made impossible, according to Reuters.
The withdrawal is selective, not evidence of a general retail collapse. Meta lists Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Ray-Ban stores and other outlets among its sales channels. Best Buy said in June 2026 that demonstrations at its Meta Lab locations would expand to more than 50 stores. EssilorLuxottica’s distribution document lists optical locations across the US, UK, Europe, Canada, Australia and other markets.

Can smart glasses record people without them knowing?
They can create that risk: a wearer may record from face level without holding up a phone, and bystanders may not notice. Meta says the glasses have a capture LED and describes it as one of several privacy measures. A visible indicator is a safeguard, not proof that everyone nearby has noticed or agreed to being recorded.
Ray-Ban says photos and videos captured while using AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history, to protect people around the wearer. That is a manufacturer statement about conversation history, not a guarantee that recording is impossible or that every use is lawful. Ray-Ban also describes settings and support for authorized prescription lenses in its FAQ.

Privacy concerns have also reached lawmakers. In 2026, California’s governor vetoed a bill that would have penalized secretly recording people with smart glasses and required a recording indicator on covered wearables from 2028. The veto letter, as reported by the Associated Press, said the bill’s definition was too broad; existing California law already restricts recording without consent in private settings. The veto did not establish a blanket permission to record: applicable laws depend on the setting and circumstances.
Asked about the issue, Meta told AP: “We’re still in the early days of building this technology and we’re committed to continuing prioritizing privacy as we build.”

Are Ray-Ban Meta glasses banned or just restricted in some stores?
The information available points to a retailer decision in two countries, not a general ban. Hans Anders suspended sales in the Netherlands and Belgium; the cited announcement does not establish a wider withdrawal. Other named retailers and optical outlets continue to offer or demonstrate the glasses, though a chain’s policy in one market does not guarantee availability at every branch or in every country.
The scale of sales and distribution helps explain why a single retailer’s decision should not be mistaken for a market-wide exit. AP reported that more than 7 million Meta Ray-Ban AI glasses were sold in 2025. EssilorLuxottica reported €28.5 billion in consolidated revenue in 2025 and said it operates 18,000 stores. Those figures describe the product’s reported sales and the company’s overall business; they do not show how many stores currently stock the glasses.

Where can I buy prescription Ray-Ban Meta glasses?
Ray-Ban says the glasses are sold through Ray-Ban.com, official Ray-Ban stores and certified dealers. Meta has also named Amazon and major optical retailers as sales channels. Retail availability and prescription-lens options vary by country, retailer and model, so check the local product listing or ask an authorized optical provider before ordering.
For prescription lenses, confirm that the seller is authorized to fit the chosen model and that the specific prescription and lens type are supported. Ray-Ban describes authorized prescription-lens support in its FAQ. Buying from an authorized channel also makes it easier to confirm local warranty and support terms; those terms should be checked with the seller rather than assumed from availability elsewhere.

What to check before buying or wearing camera glasses
- Privacy signal: Check how the capture indicator works and whether people around you can see it. Do not treat the indicator as a substitute for consent.
- Local rules and venue policies: Recording-consent laws vary by jurisdiction and setting, and venues may impose their own restrictions. Ask before recording in sensitive or private spaces.
- Retail and support: Confirm the retailer currently sells the product in your location, whether it is an authorized dealer, and what warranty and support apply.
- Prescription fit: Ask whether an authorized optical provider can fit your prescription to the exact model and lens configuration.
- Device fit: Compare camera and audio functions, battery life, and phone and app compatibility against the manufacturer’s specifications for the model you plan to buy.
