If Hitman 3 opens and immediately closes, never gets past Steam or Epic’s launch message, or shows a black screen, work through the launcher-specific checks first: confirm the PC meets the requirements, update Windows and the graphics driver, verify the game installation, remove overlays, and update HITMAN World of Assassination. Epic installations also need launcher-cache and service checks. These steps resolve many startup failures without reinstalling Windows or the entire game.
Hitman 3 is now distributed as HITMAN World of Assassination. The older search name and the current name refer to the same PC release, so use the current title when checking updates and support articles.

First identify where startup fails
Before changing files, note the exact stage of failure. Open Steam or Epic Games Launcher and record whether the launcher itself opens, whether a HITMAN process appears in Task Manager, and whether the result is a silent exit, a black screen, an error dialog, or a crash after the logo. Also note whether the problem began after a Windows, graphics-driver, or game update. The pattern determines which branch below is most useful.
- Launcher does not open: repair the launcher and its cache before touching game files.
- Game process appears briefly then exits: prioritize requirements, drivers, file verification, overlays, and crash logs.
- Black screen or crash after the logo: test overlays, local shader/cache data, and the graphics driver.
- Only one account or save fails: preserve the save data and report the account-specific symptom rather than repeatedly deleting local files.
Check the PC requirements before deeper repairs
A computer at or below the minimum specification can fail during immediate startup, especially when DirectX 12 or available storage is marginal. Steam’s current listing gives the following baseline; Square Enix publishes the same processor, memory, graphics and DirectX classes but lists a larger Windows-storage requirement.

The 60 GB and 80 GB figures are a storefront/version difference, not a contradiction to ignore. Keep additional free space for updates, shader compilation and Windows temporary files. To check your hardware, press Windows-R, enter dxdiag, and review the System and Display tabs. In Task Manager’s Performance tab, confirm installed memory and the active GPU.
Apply Steam’s official first-line sequence
Steam describes immediate exits as crashes that can have several self-solvable causes. Follow this order so that a changed driver or file can be correlated with the result.

Install Windows updates
Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install pending quality or feature updates, and restart even if Windows does not insist on it. A restart completes driver and DirectX component updates that remain pending after download.

Update the graphics driver
Install the current driver for the GPU in the PC from its manufacturer’s official support channel. If the installer offers a clean-install option, use it only when a normal update does not help; record the old version first so you can roll back if the new driver introduces the crash.

Verify the game files
In Steam, open Library, right-click HITMAN World of Assassination, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces missing or damaged files. Do not interrupt the process, and allow it to finish before launching.

Disable non-essential software and overlays
Exit recording tools, hardware-monitoring utilities, RGB controllers, third-party launchers and overlays. In particular, disable Steam Overlay for the game and temporarily turn off other in-game overlays such as chat, capture or performance widgets. Reboot and test with only Steam and the game running.

Re-check requirements and storage
Steam specifically directs users to check system requirements when a title remains stuck at “Preparing to Launch.” Confirm that the game is installed on a drive with ample free space and that Windows is using the intended dedicated GPU rather than an integrated adapter.

If the game launches after one step, re-enable background applications one at a time. The first program that reproduces the failure is a useful conflict lead.
Repair the Epic Games Launcher path
Epic installations can fail before the game executable receives control. Epic’s troubleshooting guidance treats launcher crashes, titles that do not launch and service outages as related launcher-level problems.

Check Epic service status
Look at Epic’s public service-status page before changing local files. An outage affecting authentication, ownership checks or downloads can prevent a correctly installed game from starting. Wait for the service to recover if the status page reports an incident.

Update and restart the launcher
Exit Epic Games Launcher from its system-tray menu, start it again, and allow any self-update to complete. Restart Windows afterward so no old launcher process remains in memory.

Clear the launcher web cache
Close the launcher completely. Press Windows-R, enter
%localappdata%, openEpicGamesLauncheru005cSaved, and move folders whose names begin withwebcacheto a temporary backup location. Do not delete the backup until the game has launched successfully. Start Epic again; it will recreate the cache. Folder names can vary slightly between launcher versions. -
Verify the Epic installation
Open Library, click the three-dot menu beside HITMAN World of Assassination, choose Manage, then Verify. Wait for the scan and replacement download to complete before pressing Launch.

Test without overlays or elevated conflicts
Disable Epic’s overlay and close other capture, chat and monitoring overlays. Avoid running one launcher as administrator while the other runs normally; mismatched permissions can interfere with files and authentication. If an organization-managed PC blocks the game, ask its administrator rather than changing security policy blindly.
Update HITMAN World of Assassination itself
Use the newest build offered by your launcher. IO Interactive’s January 2023 notes for the rebranded game included crash and stability fixes, and later patch notes document a fix for a Steam and Epic issue that caused the game to crash upon launch. Game Update 3.280, published in August 2026, fixed a PC crash affecting users with AMD graphics cards and explicitly advises installing fully up-to-date drivers. If your failure began after an update, compare the game build and driver version with those notes and install all pending updates before testing older workarounds.

Do not copy executable files from another installation or download unofficial “fix” DLLs. A mismatched build can fail signature checks and make later support diagnosis harder.
Use cache deletion only as a reversible diagnostic
A 2026 Hitman Forum report describes an immediate crash where deleting local pipeline and shader cache files, together with disabling overlays, helped the affected player. This is community evidence, not an official guaranteed cure. Back up the local HITMAN3 data folder first, then locate and remove only these files if they exist:

Use File Explorer’s search within the local HITMAN3 data area rather than deleting an entire profile folder. Launch the game once after removal; the first start may take longer while caches are rebuilt. If the crash remains unchanged, restore the backup and move to event-log diagnosis instead of repeating the deletion.

When the process disappears without a message, Windows usually records a faulting module or exception code.
- Press Windows-R, enter
eventvwr.msc, and open Windows Logs > Application. - Find an Error at the time of the failed launch. Record the application name, faulting module, exception code and timestamp.
- Open Reliability Monitor by pressing Windows-R and entering
perfmon /rel. Select the red X for HITMAN or the graphics driver to see whether failures began after a specific update. - Use Task Manager to check whether memory, disk or GPU usage is already saturated by another process before launching.
A module associated with a graphics driver points toward a clean driver reinstall or rollback; a launcher module points toward cache, service or authentication troubleshooting. Do not remove a system DLL solely because it appears in the event; identify the owning software first.

Additional controlled tests
Run a clean background test
Use System Configuration (msconfig) to hide Microsoft services, disable the remaining non-essential services, restart, and test. Re-enable services in groups afterward. This isolates conflicts without permanently uninstalling software.
Try a different display path
Disconnect unnecessary monitors and capture devices, set the primary display to its normal refresh rate, and test. A black screen limited to one monitor or refresh mode is a display-path problem rather than proof that game files are corrupt.
Check permissions and security software carefully
Ensure your Windows account can read and write the game’s installation and local-data folders. If security software reports a blocked file, use its event log and restore the file only when you trust the source; do not permanently disable protection as a substitute for verification.

Stop changing several variables at once and prepare a support report. Include:
- Steam or Epic, the launcher version and whether the launcher opens normally.
- Windows edition and build, CPU, GPU, installed RAM and free storage.
- GPU driver version, game build and the date the problem started.
- Whether the process exits silently, shows a black screen, or displays an error.
- Event Viewer’s faulting module and exception code, plus the Reliability Monitor entry.
- Which updates, verification, overlay tests and cache steps you completed.
Send that packet through the relevant Steam or Epic support route and IO Interactive’s support channel. A precise timeline and log excerpt are more useful than repeatedly reinstalling the game, and they let support distinguish a launcher outage, corrupted installation, driver regression, AMD-specific crash or hardware fault.
