Age of Empires IV’s “Disconnected” message can mean an outage, a platform-service problem, an account restriction, a blocked connection, an outdated build, or a local network conflict. Check the in-game maintenance notice and Xbox or PlayStation Network status first. If services are online, update the game and Windows, enable cross-network play, verify multiplayer permissions, allow the game through your firewall, relog, synchronize your clock, and only then tune your network or investigate drivers.
What the “Disconnected” message means
The message is not a diagnosis by itself. Age of Empires IV uses game servers plus the service for your platform account, so the same wording can appear when servers are being maintained, Xbox Live or PlayStation Network is degraded, your account cannot join multiplayer, or your computer cannot complete a connection. The right fix depends on which scope is failing.

Age of Empires IV: Anniversary Edition is a Windows PC title with online player-versus-player, online co-op and cross-platform multiplayer. The Steam listing gives October 28, 2021 as the release date for that edition and lists 50 GB of available storage as a system requirement. Those product details do not indicate whether a server is currently operating.

1. Rule out a server or platform outage
Check the in-game maintenance notice
Open the game and read any banner or notice before changing Windows settings. During scheduled maintenance, online matchmaking and other online features for Age of Empires games are unavailable. A match already in progress can also be disrupted when servers go offline.
Campaign, Skirmish and Art of War single-player matches remain playable during maintenance. If those modes launch while multiplayer does not, that pattern points toward service availability rather than a damaged installation.
Check platform status
Check the current Xbox service status for Xbox consoles and the Xbox PC app, or the PlayStation Network status page for PlayStation. Ask other players on the same platform whether they can sign in. A platform outage requires waiting for restoration; local firewall or DNS changes will not bypass it.
Interpret a mixed result
- Everyone is disconnected: treat it as a game or platform incident and retry after the posted maintenance window.
- Only your account is affected: continue with privacy, sign-in and profile checks.
- Only one computer or home network is affected: continue with firewall, clock and network steps below.
2. Restore the game and account’s multiplayer eligibility
Install the current game build
- Close Age of Empires IV completely.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, then Updates and allow the latest update. In the Xbox PC app or Microsoft Store, open your library and select the available update for the game.
- On console, open the game-management screen and check for updates.
- Restart the platform after the update, then test a custom or quick-match lobby.
A player on an older build may fail to see current lobbies or may be removed after joining. Every participant should be on the same current release.

Enable crossplay or cross-network play
Open the game’s Settings and look for the multiplayer option labelled Crossplay or, on some platform interfaces, Allow Cross-Network Play. Enable it for every player who needs to meet across Steam, Xbox, Microsoft Store or console networks. If you intentionally restrict play to one network, all players must use that same network.
Confirm the account is online and permitted to play
- On Steam, set your profile to public and show your status as Online. An invisible or offline profile can prevent lobby discovery.
- In the Xbox PC app, launch the app itself, confirm the intended Microsoft account is signed in and verify that its presence is Online before launching the game.
- Review the platform’s privacy and family-safety controls. Multiplayer, cross-network play and communication must be allowed for the account; child-account restrictions can block joining even when the game starts normally.
- On console, confirm the account has an active multiplayer entitlement required by that platform and is not restricted by a family setting.
Sign out inside the game, close it, restart the platform app or console, and sign back in with the account that owns the game. This refreshes an expired authentication session without changing saved games.
3. Check Windows firewall and time synchronization
Allow the game through the firewall
A local, campus or company firewall can permit web browsing while blocking matchmaking. In Windows, open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Allow an app through firewall. Select the Age of Empires IV executable or launcher and allow it on the network types you actually use. If a third-party firewall is installed, create the equivalent allow rule there as well. Do not disable the firewall permanently; re-enable protection after a controlled test.

Synchronize the PC clock
Live-service authentication uses time-sensitive credentials. Official support warns that even a slightly incorrect clock can interfere with Live Services. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, turn on Set time automatically and Set time zone automatically when appropriate, then select Sync now. Restart the game after synchronization. Check the BIOS/UEFI clock or the Windows Time service if the time drifts again.
4. Reduce local network contention
Before changing a router, remove the simplest sources of packet loss and congestion:
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, browser tabs and other game launchers on the gaming PC.
- Ask other users to pause high-bandwidth activity temporarily, or test while fewer devices are connected.
- If possible, test near the router on a reliable wired connection; otherwise move closer to the wireless access point and avoid a congested band.
- Restart the modem/router once, then reconnect the PC or console and test a match.
Official optimization guidance lists TCP 8888, UDP 9999, and port 3478 plus port 5222 on both TCP and UDP for firewall or network-hardware configuration. These values are not a universal instruction to expose your network. If your router, managed network or security appliance requires port rules, follow its manufacturer’s procedure, open only the documented traffic, and remove experimental forwarding that does not help.

When a VPN, proxy or managed network is involved
School, office and hotel networks can filter game traffic even when ordinary websites work. Test from a permitted home connection if available and follow the network administrator’s policy. A VPN or proxy adds another connection layer; disable it temporarily for diagnosis unless your network requires it. Do not bypass an organization’s controls without authorization.

Age of Empires IV stores user files under Documents > My Games > Age of Empires IV. If OneDrive is synchronizing the Windows Documents folder, its file activity can interfere with gameplay and connection stability. Pause OneDrive synchronization temporarily, launch the game, and test again. If the problem disappears, configure OneDrive so the game’s folder is not actively synchronized, while keeping a separate backup of important saves and settings.
Do not delete the folder as a first step. Removing configuration or save files can erase local data and does not repair an active outage.

7. Inspect Windows and drivers only after service checks pass
Install pending Windows updates and reboot. If Age of Empires IV and other games consistently lose connectivity on the same PC, open Device Manager > Network adapters and note the adapter model. Obtain a current driver from the computer, motherboard or adapter manufacturer, then restart and retest. A chipset driver can matter when the system has broader USB, PCIe or networking instability.
Before replacing a working driver, record its current version and create a Windows restore point. If the new driver causes problems, use Device Manager’s driver properties to roll back or reinstall the previous package. Driver work cannot repair a server outage, an account restriction or a platform incident.
