Spoilers for the core Solo Leveling story, its ending, and published side-story material follow. Sung Jinwoo begins as a hunter considered humanity’s weakest. After a near-fatal dungeon encounter, a mysterious System chooses him as its sole player, allowing him to level up when ordinary hunters cannot. His private struggle to survive grows into a war involving the Monarchs and Rulers. At the core story’s end, Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation to turn time back to before the gates appeared, then continues fighting in the dimensional gap rather than returning to a consequence-free ordinary life.
The ending is easiest to understand when the formats are kept separate. The Korean web novel came first, the webtoon adapted it visually, the anime is a television adaptation, and later comic volumes are labeled side stories. This guide explains the shared core premise and ending, then identifies what the official catalogs establish about each version.

What is Solo Leveling about?
Solo Leveling takes place in a world where gates connect Earth to another dimension. Monsters emerge through those gates, and people who awaken supernatural abilities become hunters responsible for fighting them. Jinwoo is an unusually weak hunter, so dungeon raids that are routine for stronger teams can become life-or-death ordeals for him.
The turning point is a deadly dungeon encounter. Jinwoo survives, but a mysterious System selects him as its sole player. Unlike ordinary hunters, whose abilities do not normally keep improving in the same way, he receives game-like tasks and can continue to level up. The System gives the story its central question: what happens when the person everyone calls the weakest is given a path to become stronger without an apparent ceiling?

Aniplex producer Sota Furuhashi described that premise’s appeal as “the emotional release of the lowest-ranked hunter gaining the power to level up and take down enemies that were previously out of his league.” The comment comes from an interview about the anime’s adaptation approach, not from Chugong explaining the ending or its intended meaning. Read the interview at Cocotame/Sony Music Group, published March 28, 2025.
How Jinwoo’s rise changes the story
From survival to controlled growth
At first, Jinwoo’s objective is practical: survive raids that stronger hunters take for granted. The System turns each fight into part of a continuing progression. He is no longer limited to the power level assigned when he awakens; victories, missions and increasingly dangerous encounters become steps in a deliberate climb.
That change also alters how Jinwoo approaches danger. A weak hunter normally has to depend on a party and avoid battles beyond his rank. A player with a leveling System can accept risks that would once have been irrational, provided he can survive long enough to gain the next improvement. The early dungeon story therefore establishes both the wish-fulfilment of steady progression and the cost of obtaining it.

Jinwoo’s growth eventually reaches beyond ordinary dungeon raids. His power makes him central to a conflict between the Monarchs and the Rulers, turning a personal survival story into a war over Earth and the forces connected to the gates. The escalation matters because the System is not merely a convenient training interface: it places Jinwoo in a position where his choices affect the fate of humanity.
The official summaries do not support reducing the finale to “Jinwoo becomes strong and wins.” The final movement involves a catastrophic attack on Earth, a time reversal using the Cup of Reincarnation, and a continuing campaign after the reset.

What happens at the end of Solo Leveling?
The attack and the decision to reverse time
After the Monarchs’ attack on Earth, Jinwoo uses the Cup of Reincarnation. The cup turns time back to a point before the gates appeared. This is the decisive ending mechanism: instead of trying to repair a ruined present, Jinwoo creates a timeline in which the gate crisis has not yet begun.
That reset should not be read as a simple undo button. The official licensed synopsis describes Jinwoo continuing the war in the dimensional gap after turning back time. In other words, he accepts the burden of fighting away from the ordinary human timeline so that people on Earth can have the chance to live without the original gate disaster.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does Jinwoo go back in time?
Yes. The Cup of Reincarnation sends the timeline back to before the gates appeared. The important qualification is what Jinwoo does afterward: he does not simply resume a normal life and forget the conflict. He continues fighting in the dimensional gap, carrying the war forward even though the reset changes Earth’s history.
Does the reset erase every consequence?
No. It removes the gate crisis from the revised Earth timeline, but it does not erase Jinwoo’s mission. The post-reset dimensional-gap battle remains part of the official ending description. Saying that “nothing happened” would therefore misrepresent the conclusion; the reset protects the world at the price of Jinwoo continuing the fight elsewhere.
What is the Cup of Reincarnation?
The Cup of Reincarnation is the artifact that enables the final time reversal. Its role is specific: Jinwoo uses it after the Monarchs’ attack to return the timeline to before the gates appeared. It is not presented in the official summary as a device that grants an ordinary resurrection or wipes away all memory and responsibility.

The word “reincarnation” can make the ending sound like Jinwoo starts over as a different person. The published description instead emphasizes a temporal reset and a continuing war in the dimensional gap. The safest reading is that the world’s history is rewritten while Jinwoo’s obligation to oppose the Monarchs continues.

What happens after the reset?
The reset creates two simultaneous outcomes. On Earth, history returns to a point before the gates appeared. In the dimensional gap, Jinwoo keeps fighting. This split explains why the ending is both hopeful and costly: humanity receives a chance at a normal history, while Jinwoo remains occupied by a conflict that ordinary people no longer experience directly.
Netmarble’s official Solo Leveling: KARMA story synopsis revisits the dimensional-gap conflict after the reset. That page is evidence that an official licensed game explores this period; it is not proof that every game event belongs to the original novel’s ending. Treat the game as later franchise material, not as a replacement for the core novel or webtoon finale. The synopsis is available at Netmarble’s official story page.
Core ending versus epilogue and side stories
Catalog labels make an important distinction. Yen Press lists the principal English comic run through volume 13, then identifies volumes 14 and 15 as “Side Stories 1” and “Side Stories 2.” Tappytoon’s official comic page labels the epilogue as available. These are published follow-up materials, but they should not be folded into the core battle and time-reset ending as if they were the same section of the story.
The later material also introduces Sooho, the son of Jinwoo and Haein. That premise places the side stories beyond the core conclusion and shifts attention to a new generation. A reader who wants only the original rise, Monarch conflict and Cup of Reincarnation ending can stop at the core run; a reader who wants the aftermath should continue into the separately labeled side-story volumes.

Check the catalog structure on Yen Press’s Solo Leveling comic page and the epilogue label on Tappytoon’s official comic page. Neither page should be treated as evidence that all later licensed stories are part of the original ending.
Novel, webtoon and anime: what is the same and what is different?
| Format | What the official material establishes | How to use it when discussing the ending |
|---|---|---|
| Korean web novel | The original prose story that preceded the webtoon. | Use it as the source format for the core narrative; do not assume every later licensed adaptation detail is part of the novel. |
| Webtoon/comic | A popular illustrated adaptation; Yen Press lists the main comic through volume 13 and side stories in volumes 14 and 15. | The completed core comic can be discussed separately from its labeled epilogue and side stories. |
| Anime | A co-production of Aniplex and Crunchyroll, animated by A-1 Pictures, adapting the webtoon. | Its release endpoint may not match the completed print story. Do not claim the anime has shown the finale unless a specific episode or season has done so. |
| Later licensed material | Official game and side-story material revisit the post-reset period or introduce Sooho. | Label it as later franchise material rather than treating it as a scene-by-scene continuation of the original ending. |
The anime producers said they aimed to follow the webtoon closely while adding psychological depth for other characters. Their reason was practical: the source’s compact, protagonist-focused chapters could feel repetitive if transferred directly to television. Those additions are adaptation choices, not evidence that the ending’s Cup of Reincarnation outcome has been changed.
The creator credits also vary by format. Yen Press credits Chugong as author, DUBU of REDICE STUDIO as the novel artist, and DISCIPLES of REDICE STUDIO as the comic artist, with h-goon as adapter. The producer interview identifies Chugong as the original-story creator, DUBU of REDICE STUDIO as illustrator and h-goon as screenwriter. These credits describe different stages and editions, so they should not be collapsed into one generic “author” label.

The protagonist is called Sung Jinwoo in the overseas releases covered here. The Japanese webtoon version used the name Shun Mizushino. This is a localization distinction, not a second character or a different ending. Use the name associated with the edition under discussion; this explanation follows the overseas name Jinwoo.

How to read the ending without common misunderstandings
It is not only a power-fantasy victory
Jinwoo’s ability to level up supplies the emotional engine, but the finale is about responsibility as much as strength. He uses his advantage to alter history and accepts continued combat in the dimensional gap. The outcome protects Earth while separating him from the ordinary life his victory makes possible.

It is not an ordinary reset with no aftermath
The phrase “before the gates appeared” describes the revised starting point, not a declaration that Jinwoo’s work is finished. The official ending summary explicitly keeps the dimensional-gap war active.
It is not safe to claim scene-level identity across formats
The available publisher and producer materials establish the broad premise, credits, catalog labels and reset outcome. They do not provide a chapter-by-chapter comparison proving that the novel and webtoon finales are identical in every scene, nor do they provide a verified Chugong quotation explaining the ending’s intended symbolism. A careful explanation should therefore describe the shared outcome without inventing differences or declaring perfect identity.
Where to continue reading
Readers who want the illustrated version can follow the official English comic listings from Yen Press. The catalog separates the main run from Side Stories 1 and Side Stories 2, making it possible to stop at the core ending or continue into the aftermath.
Readers who prefer prose can use the official English novel series and its eight-novel collection/omnibus listings. The publisher’s catalog establishes the editions; availability, retailer stock and prices can change by region and date, so confirm those details with the seller before ordering.
