The practical model is to let AI prepare drafts and move information between connected systems while the owner reviews customer-facing actions, handles exceptions, and tests the workflow as a customer would.
What AI handled in this one-person business
In an essay published by The AI Journal on August 21, 2026, consultant Jacob King describes using AI across email, invoicing, customer records, meeting preparation, and first drafts of published material. He says he connected AI to his existing inbox, calendar, payment system, and customer list. These are his descriptions of his own operations, not an independent audit of the business or its results.

Some tasks involved moving information rather than generating new content. King says that moving a customer card to “won” on a pipeline board prompted a follow-up confirmation. In another example, he asked by text for 35 contact records to be checked against a live database and reported that all 35 matched. Those examples illustrate the kind of administrative work he delegated; they do not establish how reliably another system or business would perform.

Why the approval step matters
King’s operating rule is “AI drafts, I approve.” In his setup, the system could prepare an email but was technically blocked from sending it until he reviewed and approved it. He says he used the same gate for invoices and other customer-visible actions. That safeguard reflects a choice in his setup, not a standard guarantee of AI software: an owner needs to verify that an approval gate is actually enforced in the tools and workflow being used.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Review is also more than proofreading. A useful check asks whether the output is accurate, appropriate for the customer, and safe to act on—and whether the workflow is doing what the owner intended. AI can prepare a task, but the owner remains accountable for what reaches a customer or changes a record or payment.
What the reported time saving does—and doesn’t—show
King recounts one insurance employee’s estimate: assembling quote comparisons manually took about three and a half hours, while a system he configured produced a comparison in about five minutes, followed by the employee’s review. The timings are attributed to that employee’s own account in King’s 2026 essay. They are a single client example, not a controlled comparison or evidence of a typical saving; the review step is part of the reported process.

The essay also reports that the U.S. Chamber of Commerce found 40% of small businesses used generative AI, nearly twice the year before, and that Stanford’s 2025 AI Index put organizational AI use at 78%. Those are figures as reported by King; the underlying publications were not independently verified here. They should not be treated as independently established statistics on the strength of the essay alone.

What broke, and what those failures reveal
King describes several problems that put limits on the idea of an unattended business. During a client setup, a website login wall blocked an automation. An adversarial review of billing code found a bug that could have processed a payment twice. He also says his own site sent would-be customers in a loop through a payment route because he had reviewed it like its builder instead of testing it as a stranger would.

King says AI wrote and caught the billing bug, with the catch depending on adversarial review being part of the process. The episode is a reminder that generating code and checking it are separate tasks: a risk can remain unless the review process actively looks for failure cases. These incidents are his account, not a measured failure rate or proof that a particular safeguard will prevent similar problems elsewhere.
Together, the examples show why automating a workflow does not remove operational work. A login restriction can interrupt a task; a billing error can create real costs; and a path that seems obvious to its builder can confuse a customer. Time spent typing may fall while the need to check outputs, test edge cases, and examine the experience from outside increases.

How to apply the approach to a solo business
King’s recommendation is to begin with one recurring workflow the owner dislikes, automate it end to end, and keep the owner as the approval step. Expand only after that workflow works reliably. A cautious rollout can turn that advice into a practical sequence:
- Choose a recurring, bounded task. Pick work with a clear start and finish, such as preparing a routine follow-up draft or organizing customer information, rather than handing over an entire business process at once.
- Define what the system may do. Specify which records or tools it can access, what it may prepare or change, and which actions must wait for approval. Do not assume a review gate exists; confirm that the workflow prevents an unapproved customer-facing action.
- Review every output while learning. Check facts, recipients, amounts, and the effect of any record changes before approving. Keep the human check in place as an operating control, not merely as an initial setup step.
- Test failures and the customer path. Try the workflow with a blocked login, missing or unexpected information, and a customer journey from the beginning. Confirm that errors are visible and that customers can reach the intended next step.
- Expand gradually. Add another workflow only after the first has behaved reliably in ordinary use and in the edge cases that matter to the business.
King frames AI as an operations worker that needs training, supervision, and guardrails—not as an infallible expert. In his account, the tools were only part of the change: judgment remained necessary to decide what to delegate, inspect the result, and catch problems before they reached customers.
