Short answer: Standalone, grid-tied solar is usually the lower-cost way to reduce electricity purchases, but it normally shuts down when the utility grid fails. Solar-plus-storage costs more and can keep designated circuits running during an outage, provided the inverter, transfer equipment, battery power rating and load design support islanded operation. There is no universal winner: the right choice depends on your utility tariff, export compensation, outage risk, critical loads, site and financing.

What you are actually comparing

“Standalone solar” generally means a photovoltaic array connected to the utility through a grid-tied inverter, without a battery. While the grid is available, the array can serve household loads and send surplus production to the grid under the utility’s interconnection and export rules.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

“Solar-plus-storage” adds a battery system, controls and an inverter arrangement that can separate selected household circuits from the grid. It can store midday production for later use, reduce imports during expensive tariff periods and provide backup when the grid is down. A battery does not automatically make every solar installation a whole-home backup system.

A proposal can be attractive on one scorecard and poor on the other. A battery may improve resilience while lengthening the financial payback; a low-cost PV-only system may deliver strong bill savings but no outage protection.

Why panels alone normally go dark in an outage

Most residential PV systems are designed to disconnect when grid voltage disappears. This anti-islanding behavior protects utility workers and prevents an inverter from energizing lines thought to be de-energized. The result is counterintuitive: a sunny house with rooftop panels can lose power during a blackout.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar and Resilience Basics explains that independent operation requires a properly configured inverter and storage. A solar-plus-storage system detects grid loss, isolates the home or backed-up circuits and forms an islanded power system. The exact circuits that transfer depend on the installed switchgear, inverter controls and the installer’s design.

Some systems can continue producing solar power while islanded and use it to run loads or recharge the battery. Others curtail PV when the battery is full or household demand is low. Ask for the operating sequence in writing rather than assuming that panels will recharge any battery during every outage.

Battery specifications that determine usable backup

Two ratings matter, and they answer different questions:

  • Energy capacity (kWh): how much energy the battery can store. This relates primarily to duration.
  • Power capacity (kW): how quickly the battery can deliver energy. This determines whether it can run several appliances together and start motors.

The Department of Energy notes that storage is not lossless: charging, conversion and retrieval consume some energy. The nameplate kWh therefore is not the same as energy available at household outlets. Usable capacity, reserve settings, temperature, battery age and the inverter’s conversion efficiency all affect runtime.

Continuous and surge output

Refrigerators, well pumps, sump pumps, air-conditioners and other motors can draw a short starting surge several times higher than their running wattage. A battery with enough kWh for an overnight period can still trip if its inverter cannot supply that instantaneous surge. Request both continuous and surge output, the surge duration, and the largest motor load the installer has included in the design.

Essential-load versus whole-home backup

An essential-load panel may cover refrigeration, lighting, internet equipment, medical devices, a gas-furnace blower and selected outlets. Whole-home backup requires equipment and service capacity sized for the home’s simultaneous loads, often including electric cooking, water heating, heating or cooling and vehicle charging. “Whole home” on a sales sheet is not a technical specification; obtain a circuit schedule and maximum-load calculation.

How to estimate runtime without misleading yourself

Runtime is a load-profile question, not a simple promise based on battery size. A rough planning calculation is:

  • Uninterrupted Life. Online UPS with 0-ms transfer time, offering 24/7 protection for sensitive electrical devices against power disturbances or grid failure. All fans are off for the first half hour of outputting 2000W, giving you absolute silence for tranquility in everyday life.

estimated hours ≈ usable battery kWh × inverter and wiring efficiency ÷ average backed-up load kW

Use the actual backed-up circuits and include conversion losses and the battery reserve. For example, a hypothetical 10 kWh usable battery delivering 90% of that energy to loads has about 9 kWh available. At a measured 0.5 kW average load, that is roughly 18 hours; at 2 kW, it is roughly 4.5 hours. A refrigerator’s cycling, pump starts, weather, battery temperature and reserve policy can make real results different. This illustration is not a forecast for any particular home.

Ask the installer for at least three scenarios: overnight essential loads, a high-demand summer or winter period, and a prolonged outage with limited sunlight. Include whether the battery is allowed to discharge to its full nominal depth and whether solar recharge is expected.

Cost comparison: use local, same-scope bids

No current, nationally generalizable residential installed-price figure establishes what a homeowner should pay. Local labor, permitting, service upgrades, roof conditions, equipment and financing can move a bid substantially. Request three itemized designs with the same PV size and assumptions:

  1. PV-only, grid-tied.
  2. New PV with storage, showing battery energy and power ratings.
  3. Storage added to existing PV, if you already have an array.

For each, separate equipment, labor, permits, interconnection, sales tax, financing fees, monitoring, service upgrades and any incentive. Compare cash price with financed total, not just the advertised monthly payment. Ask what replacement assumptions are included for the inverter and battery and whether labor is covered.

What published benchmarks can and cannot tell you

NREL’s U.S. Solar Photovoltaic System and Energy Storage Cost Benchmarks: Q1 2020 (published 2021) modeled residential configurations rather than reporting current consumer transactions. Its modeled more-resilient DC-coupled case was $35,591, or $9,438 (36%), above the report’s less-resilient DC-coupled system. The report’s AC-coupled more-resilient case was $37,909, or $9,538 (34%), above that DC-coupled less-resilient battery comparison.

The National Laboratory of the Rockies’ 2024 Annual Technology Baseline emphasizes that residential battery cost depends on both power capacity and energy capacity. A proposal that lists only dollars per kWh omits a major part of the system’s cost and capability.

DOE’s 2019 Solar-Plus-Storage 101 reported modeled utility-scale results in which co-located DC-coupled PV-plus-storage was 8% lower cost than a separately sited comparison, and co-located AC-coupled storage was 7% lower. Those figures describe a particular utility-scale model; they should not be applied to a rooftop bid.

Bill savings and payback: the inputs that change the answer

Solar reduces purchases from the utility. A battery can increase self-consumption by moving solar energy from a sunny period into evening demand, but every cycle has losses and operating limits. Whether that shift has financial value depends on the tariff:

  • Battery charging rules and limits on exporting stored energy.

For example, generous export credits can make a battery less valuable for bill reduction, while low export compensation and a large evening load can improve the value of self-consumption. A battery bought mainly for outages may never achieve the shortest financial payback; resilience is a separate benefit.

A practical bid-comparison worksheet

Item PV-only bid PV-plus-storage bid
PV size and expected annual production Record the same units and assumptions Record the same units and assumptions
Gross installed price Include permits and service work Include battery, controls and transfer equipment
Financing total and fees Record cash and financed totals Record cash and financed totals
Battery usable kWh / continuous and surge kW Not applicable Require nameplate and usable values
Backed-up circuits Normally none during grid loss Attach a circuit list and load calculation
Expected annual bill under your tariff Use utility-specific export rules Model charging, discharging and losses
Warranty and replacement assumptions List PV, inverter and labor coverage List battery throughput, capacity retention and labor coverage

Have every bidder use the same annual consumption data, utility rate sheet, roof shading assumptions and outage-load list. Otherwise a lower “payback” may simply reflect more favorable assumptions.

AC-coupled and DC-coupled designs

In a DC-coupled system, PV and the battery share a DC-side architecture before power is inverted for household use. In an AC-coupled system, PV and battery commonly have separate inverters on the AC side. The choice affects conversion paths, retrofit compatibility, control behavior and equipment replacement.

Neither label alone proves that one design is cheaper or more reliable for your house. New construction, an existing PV inverter, planned battery expansion, outage operation and the utility’s interconnection requirements all matter. Ask the installer to show the one-line diagram, identify which inverter forms the island, and explain what happens when the battery reaches full charge or minimum reserve.

Federal tax-credit timing for a 2026 decision

The IRS FAQ covering Public Law 119-21 states that the residential clean energy credit under section 25D is not allowed for expenditures made after December 31, 2025. That cutoff is material for expenditures in 2026. Older pages describing a 30% residential credit reflect earlier rules and should not be used as current post-cutoff guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not subtract a federal credit from a 2026 proposal unless your tax professional confirms that the specific expenditure qualifies under a currently applicable provision. State, local and utility incentives remain location-specific and may have their own equipment, application and deadline rules.

Reliability questions to put in the contract

  • Which circuits are backed up, and is the transfer automatic?
  • What are the battery’s usable kWh, continuous kW and surge kW at the stated temperature and state of charge?
  • What reserve percentage is held for outage protection?
  • Can PV recharge the battery while islanded? Under what sunlight and state-of-charge conditions?
  • What happens when the battery is full, empty or offline?
  • Can the system start the largest pump, compressor or HVAC motor?
  • What is the expected transfer time, and which sensitive devices need an uninterruptible power supply?
  • What happens during several cloudy days or an outage longer than the modeled duration?
  • Which components require internet access for monitoring or controls, and does backup operation continue if the internet is unavailable?

Require diagrams, load calculations and commissioning results, not only a battery capacity headline.

When standalone solar is the better fit

  • Your primary goal is lowering annual electricity purchases and the grid is generally reliable.
  • Your utility provides strong export compensation or your daytime load already matches solar production.
  • Your budget cannot support storage without excessive financing cost.
  • You have no critical loads that justify backup equipment.
  • You expect to add storage later and the initial inverter and roof design will remain compatible.

Plan the future option before signing: inverter type, spare capacity, conduit, interconnection limits and warranty terms can affect the cost of a later retrofit.

When solar-plus-storage is worth considering

  • Outages are frequent, lengthy or costly for medical, heating, water, refrigeration or communications needs.
  • Your tariff makes evening imports expensive and export credits are low.
  • You can identify a modest essential-load panel rather than attempting to back up every appliance.
  • You value resilience enough to accept a potentially longer financial payback.
  • The site and utility allow a design that can island safely and recharge from PV.

For limited, portable needs, DOE identifies portable power units with solar charging as a smaller-scale application. They can run selected small loads, but they are not equivalent to a professionally installed, grid-connected home battery and should not be represented as whole-home backup.

Common comparison mistakes and fixes

Using battery kWh as a runtime promise

Fix: calculate from measured backed-up loads, usable energy, power limits, reserve and conversion losses.

Assuming panels work in every blackout

Fix: verify islanding hardware, backed-up circuits and the solar-recharge sequence in the design documents.

Comparing unlike bids

Fix: normalize PV size, production assumptions, roof work, service upgrades, warranties, financing and tariff model.

Treating a historical benchmark as today’s price

Fix: use NREL figures only to understand modeled cost components; use same-date local quotes for a purchase decision.

Counting an outdated federal credit

Fix: for 2026 expenditures, check the IRS’s current section 25D guidance and obtain tax advice for your situation.

A decision process that produces an answer for your home

  1. Collect 12–24 months of bills and the utility’s current rate, export and interconnection documents.
  2. List critical loads, their running watts, motor-starting requirements and desired outage duration.
  3. Get three same-scope designs: PV-only, new PV-plus-storage and a retrofit where relevant.
  4. Verify the electrical design: one-line diagram, islanding method, transfer equipment, circuit list and continuous/surge ratings.
  5. Model bill effects using your tariff, export rules, battery losses and degradation assumptions.
  6. Price resilience separately: decide what outage capability is worth to you, rather than hiding it inside a payback number.
  7. Review warranties and service: capacity retention, throughput limits, labor, monitoring, replacement and end-of-life handling.
  8. Check incentives and taxes for your location and contract date, with a qualified professional where necessary.
  9. Choose only after commissioning terms are clear, including verification that the system islands and restores the specified circuits safely.

Bottom line for the comparison

Choose standalone solar when your priority is lower upfront cost and bill reduction, and you can tolerate the grid being unavailable during outages. Choose solar-plus-storage when specified backup circuits, power capability and recharge behavior solve a real resilience need or when your tariff rewards shifting energy enough to justify the added equipment. The decisive evidence is an itemized local bid tied to your utility rules and measured loads—not a national average, a battery kWh headline or an old tax-credit assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a battery keep my entire house running automatically?

Not necessarily. Backup may be limited to an essential-load panel, and whole-home operation requires equipment and wiring sized for the home’s simultaneous running and starting loads.

Can rooftop solar charge a battery during a blackout?

Some inverter and control designs can operate PV while islanded and recharge the battery; others curtail production under certain conditions. The installer must document the exact operating mode.
