Solana vs. Sui: Transaction Finality, Speed, and Developer Trade-offs

Short answer: Sui documents typical end-to-end finality of 400–700 milliseconds, measured from user submission until a full node returns a finality confirmation. Solana does not have one equivalent “final” timer: its RPC exposes processed, confirmed, and finalized commitments, each with a different rollback risk and freshness. A fair comparison therefore has to name the exact confirmation milestone, transaction type, endpoint, and workload.

For builders, the larger decision is architectural. Solana uses stateless programs with mutable state in separate accounts and schedules non-conflicting account accesses in parallel. Sui uses Move, an object-centric state model, and programmable transaction blocks; transactions touching different shared objects can run in parallel. Neither chain is universally easier or faster for every application. Your state-access pattern, acceptable settlement risk, language experience, and production RPC design matter more than a single headline TPS number.

The practical answer in one view

Question Solana Sui
What does the client observe? RPC commitment levels: processed, confirmed, or finalized. Certified transaction effects, or a certified checkpoint when the effects acknowledgements are not yet available.
What is the strongest settlement signal? finalized, the strongest commitment level in Solana’s RPC documentation. A full effects digest paired with quorum acknowledgements; Sui describes this as proof of settlement finality.
Published timing evidence The confirmation guide discusses relative lag and rollback risk rather than one universal finality time. Typical end-to-end finality of 400–700 ms, from submission to full-node finality confirmation.
Published throughput evidence No matched Solana-versus-Sui live-mainnet figure is established here. Mysticeti benchmarks report 300,000 TPS before latency crosses one second in a controlled 10-node environment and about 0.5 seconds average consensus commitment at sustained 200,000 TPS. Sui says these are not production metrics.
Programming model Programs are executable accounts; mutable state is held in separate data accounts supplied to instructions. Move objects, ownership and shared-object rules, plus programmable transaction blocks (PTBs) for composing calls.

These rows are not interchangeable measurements. Sui’s 400–700 ms figure is an end-to-end lifecycle measurement. Solana’s labels identify commitment states, and the time to reach each state varies with cluster conditions, submission path, RPC endpoint and transaction behavior.

What “finality” means on each network

Solana has three commitment levels

Solana RPC documentation defines processed as the node’s newest processed block. It is the freshest view, but that block can still be rolled back if the cluster adopts another fork. confirmed means the block received a direct vote from a supermajority of active stake. finalized is the strongest commitment state and carries the maximum lockout described by Solana’s confirmation model.

  • [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.

Calling all three states “final” hides a product decision. A wallet balance display may tolerate a short-lived rollback and use processed or confirmed. A withdrawal service, exchange credit or irreversible business action generally needs the risk profile of finalized. The client should record which commitment it waited for rather than exposing an unqualified “success” label.

Sui treats certified effects as settlement proof

Sui’s consensus documentation describes Mysticeti as a directed-acyclic-graph consensus protocol. Once a transaction’s full effects digest is paired with quorum acknowledgements, those certified effects prove settlement finality and the transaction is irreversible. If the acknowledgements are not immediately available, a full node can wait for inclusion in a certified checkpoint and use that checkpoint as the finality proof.

This is a different mental model from Solana’s three RPC labels. The useful client question on Sui is whether the effects have been certified (or included in a certified checkpoint), not whether an account has reached a Solana-style commitment name.

Solana confirmation: freshness versus confidence

Why applications often use confirmed

Solana’s transaction-confirmation guide recommends confirmed for many RPC requests. It is usually only a few slots behind processed while having a very low chance of belonging to a dropped fork. That makes it a practical compromise when an application needs responsive feedback without acting on the newest, least-stable view.

What waiting for finalized costs

The same guide says the newest finalized block is typically at least 32 slots behind the newest confirmed block. It also estimates that roughly 5% of blocks do not become finalized. Those are guide estimates, not permanent network constants; cluster conditions can change them. Selecting a finalized blockhash lowers dropped-fork risk, but the guide says it can reduce the remaining transaction-expiration window by about 13 seconds because the blockhash is older.

This creates a real operational trade-off. A service that waits too long to choose or submit against a finalized blockhash can approach expiration, while a service that uses a very fresh processed blockhash can face a higher chance of building on an abandoned fork. Confirmation policy, blockhash selection and retry logic have to be designed together.

Use the commitment level as part of the API contract

  1. Define the business event. Decide whether the user needs “seen by a node,” “voted by a supermajority,” or the strongest available settlement state.
  2. Choose the corresponding commitment. Use processed only when freshness is more valuable than rollback resistance; use confirmed for many interactive flows; reserve finalized for actions that cannot be reversed safely.
  3. Surface intermediate states. Show submitted, confirmed and finalized as distinct states instead of collapsing them into one spinner or success message.
  4. Handle expiry and fork changes. Re-check the transaction and blockhash through the same operational path your production service will use. A timeout is not proof that the transaction failed, and a processed result is not proof that it will finalize.
  5. Use production-grade RPC. Solana’s RPC overview says shared public endpoints are not intended for production applications. Rate limits, latency and inconsistent node views can otherwise dominate the user-visible timing.

Sui finality and the meaning of 400–700 ms

Sui’s lifecycle documentation reports that end-to-end finality typically takes 400–700 ms, measured from the moment the user submits the transaction until the full node returns a finality confirmation. “Typically” and the measurement endpoints are essential qualifications: this is a documented range, not a universal guarantee for every transaction, region, client or network condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The timing includes the client-to-node submission path and the node’s return of the finality signal. It should not be compared directly with a block-production interval, a validator-to-validator consensus delay, or a Solana timestamp measured at a different point in the lifecycle.

When a client should accept Sui settlement

  • Accept certified effects when the full effects digest has quorum acknowledgements.
  • If those acknowledgements are not yet returned, wait for the transaction to appear in a certified checkpoint, which Sui documentation identifies as an alternative proof of finality.
  • Keep submission, effects certification and checkpoint inclusion as separate telemetry fields so a latency dashboard explains where time was spent.

Throughput claims: what the Sui benchmarks do and do not prove

Sui’s consensus documentation reports that Mysticeti reached 300,000 transactions per second before latency crossed one second in a controlled 10-node environment. The same page reports about 0.5 seconds average consensus commitment at sustained 200,000 TPS in benchmark testing. Sui explicitly labels these controlled results as benchmarks rather than production metrics.

A benchmark ceiling is not the number a mainnet application will observe. Production throughput depends on validator hardware and placement, transaction sizes, signatures, object access, failures, client submission rates, retries and the proportion of transactions that contend for shared state. A claim such as “Sui handles 300,000 TPS” is therefore misleading unless it includes the controlled setup and the latency threshold.

Why there is no honest single TPS winner here

No matched live-mainnet dataset with identical hardware, workload, submission path and confirmation definition has been established for Solana and Sui. Without those controls, a Solana live-TPS number and a Sui Mysticeti benchmark number would measure different things.

For an apples-to-apples test, publish all of the following:

  • the start event, such as client submission or node receipt;
  • the end event, such as Solana confirmed, Solana finalized, Sui certified effects or certified-checkpoint inclusion;
  • transaction type, payload size, signature count and success criteria;
  • client, RPC and geographic submission path;
  • sample period, validator conditions and network congestion;
  • whether failed, expired or dropped transactions count in the denominator; and
  • latency percentiles as well as throughput, so a high rate does not hide unacceptable tail delay.

Until those conditions are met, use the documented semantics and clearly separated measurements rather than declaring one chain categorically faster.

Developer trade-offs: accounts versus objects

Area Solana Sui What it means for a project
Where code runs Programs are executable accounts and are stateless. Move packages define code that operates on objects. The team must learn a different way to represent ownership, references and state transitions.
Where mutable state lives Separate data accounts are passed to instructions. Solana documentation summarizes this as: “Programs are stateless. All mutable state lives in separate data accounts passed via instructions.” State is represented by owned, shared and other Move objects that transactions reference. Data layout, authorization and transaction construction follow different rules.
Common development approaches Rust-based approaches including Anchor, Pinocchio and native Rust. Move, with TypeScript SDK construction commonly used for programmable transaction blocks. Existing Rust experience can reduce Solana ramp-up; Sui requires learning Move and its object semantics. Neither fact proves universal productivity.
Composing operations Transactions compose instructions and can invoke other programs. PTBs compose calls and can pass outputs between calls. Map the workflow’s atomicity, data flow and transaction-size constraints before choosing.
Parallel execution Non-conflicting account accesses can be scheduled in parallel; accounts must be declared for scheduling. Transactions touching different shared objects can be parallelized. Independent state scales better on both systems; a hot writable account or object can become the bottleneck.
Operational integration Commitment selection, blockhash freshness, retries and RPC behavior directly affect confirmation. Clients consume certified effects or certified checkpoints through Sui full nodes. Consensus design does not remove the need for reliable node access, observability and failure handling.

How state access determines realized speed

Solana account contention

Solana’s scheduler can execute transactions in parallel when their declared account reads and writes do not conflict. A workload that updates separate user accounts can expose more parallelism than one that repeatedly writes a single global account. Account declarations are therefore both a correctness requirement and a performance design choice.

Sui object contention

Sui documentation describes parallel execution for transactions that touch different shared objects. The same principle applies: if many transactions require the same shared object, that object introduces serialization or coordination pressure. Object ownership and transfer patterns should be designed around the application’s hottest paths, not added after performance problems appear.

Model the workload before choosing a chain

  1. List every object or account each transaction reads and writes.
  2. Mark which resources are shared, globally writable or updated on every request.
  3. Separate independent user operations from workflows that require a common counter, order book, pool or registry.
  4. Estimate conflict rates under realistic bursts, not just average traffic.
  5. Measure end-to-end confirmation with the commitment milestone your product will actually use.

Choosing Solana or Sui by application requirement

Choose Solana when its account model and Rust path fit the team

Solana is a natural candidate when the team is comfortable with Rust-oriented tooling, can make account reads and writes explicit, and needs an ecosystem built around instruction composition and program-to-program calls. Its confirmation levels let the product choose between fresher feedback and stronger rollback resistance, but the client must implement that distinction deliberately.

Choose Sui when object ownership and Move match the domain

Sui is a strong candidate when an object-centric design makes ownership and transfers clearer, when Move is an acceptable language investment, and when PTBs fit multi-step atomic workflows. The documented 400–700 ms typical finality range can be attractive for interactive products, provided the team measures its own submission path and does not treat benchmark TPS as a production promise.

When neither headline metric decides it

If the application has a highly contended global state, both systems can encounter a bottleneck despite different consensus designs. If the team lacks reliable RPC operations, either chain can produce poor user experience. If regulatory, wallet, indexing or custody integrations dominate the schedule, evaluate those dependencies directly rather than inferring them from finality claims.

A measurement plan for a defensible selection

  1. Define two completion events. For Solana, record both confirmed and finalized where relevant. For Sui, record certified effects and certified-checkpoint fallback.
  2. Use the same workload shape. Keep payload size, signature count, read/write set, success rate and transaction mix equivalent across trials.
  3. Use comparable submission paths. Run clients from the same regions and record the RPC or full-node endpoint, retries and queueing.
  4. Capture distributions. Report median, p95 and p99 latency, sustainable throughput and error or expiry rates.
  5. Stress contention separately. Test independent accounts or objects, then repeat with a deliberately hot shared resource.
  6. Repeat under load changes. A chain that looks good at a quiet baseline may behave differently during bursts, retries or partial failures.
  7. Document the date and software versions. Protocol behavior, RPC guidance and benchmark results can change; a dated result is more useful than an evergreen-sounding number.

Comparing Sui benchmark TPS with a live Solana number

The 300,000 TPS and 200,000 TPS figures come from controlled Mysticeti tests, not observed production traffic. Put benchmark and production measurements in separate sections and include their conditions.

Quoting 400–700 ms without endpoints

The Sui range starts at user submission and ends when a full node returns finality confirmation. Omitting those endpoints makes the number sound like a validator or block interval.

Assuming parallel execution eliminates contention

Parallelism depends on independent state. A hot account on Solana or hot shared object on Sui can limit throughput even when the protocol supports parallel execution in principle.

Ignoring RPC operations

Public shared endpoints are not intended for Solana production applications, and any chain’s node latency, rate limits, retries and indexing path can dominate perceived speed. Treat infrastructure as part of the architecture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for builders

Sui offers a clearly documented typical end-to-end finality range of 400–700 ms and benchmark evidence for very high Mysticeti throughput under controlled conditions. Solana offers a tiered confirmation model in which processed, confirmed and finalized answer different risk and freshness requirements; its guide estimates finalized blocks can lag confirmed blocks by at least 32 slots and notes that roughly 5% of blocks may not finalize under the guide’s stated conditions.

Select the chain whose state model, language, transaction composition and operational tooling fit your application. Then test the actual account or object conflicts and measure the exact settlement event your users need. That approach produces a useful engineering decision; a single TPS headline does not.
