There is no single “faster” or “cheaper” winner. Solana and Ethereum report different transaction milestones, price different resources, and behave differently under congestion. Solana exposes processed, confirmed, and finalized commitments. Ethereum separates block inclusion from checkpoint justification and finalization. A transaction can appear usable before either network reaches its strongest settlement state.
The practical comparison is therefore three questions: how quickly a transaction is included, when an application can safely show success, and when the result is difficult to reverse. Fees must be compared for the same operation, at the same network load, with the same priority choice—and any SOL-to-ETH or dollar conversion needs a timestamp.

What “transaction speed” actually measures
People use “speed” for several different events. Mixing them produces misleading Solana-versus-Ethereum claims.

Solana’s commitment levels and Ethereum’s checkpoint process use different terminology, so “confirmed on Solana” and “confirmed on Ethereum” are not automatically equivalent. A fair comparison names the chain, the status being measured, the workload, and the network conditions.

How Solana reports speed and settlement
Processed: the optimistic first status
Processed means a node has processed the transaction in its current view. It is an optimistic status: the block can still be rolled back. It can be suitable for flows that tolerate a temporary view of the chain, but it is not the right threshold for an irreversible external action.
Confirmed: the usual application threshold
Confirmed indicates a stronger level of validator support than processed. Solana’s documentation defines confirmation time as the wall-clock interval from a leader creating a tick entry to a confirmed block. That definition is useful for measuring protocol confirmation, but it is not a promise that every wallet, remote node, or end user observes the same end-to-end latency. Network path, RPC service, transaction construction, and application polling all add time outside that interval.
Solana’s migration guidance recommends confirmed for most production, user-facing transaction status. A payment interface can normally tell a user that the transaction has reached the application’s chosen confirmation threshold while still reserving stronger language for finality.

A Solana transaction is finalized when the block containing it becomes a root. The root is the point at which the network has advanced its strongest commitment over that block. Solana’s guidance recommends waiting for finalized before taking an irreversible off-chain action, such as releasing an external asset or recording a permanent business decision.
The three statuses are not competing speed claims; they are risk settings. Choosing processed gives the earliest signal and the greatest rollback exposure. Confirmed is the documented default for most user-facing production flows. Finalized provides the strongest settlement assurance and can take longer.
How Ethereum separates inclusion from finality
Slots and epochs
Ethereum proof-of-stake divides time into 12-second slots and groups 32 slots into an epoch. A validator may propose a block in a slot, but the existence of a block does not by itself mean that the block is finalized.

Inclusion comes first
When a transaction is included in an Ethereum block, it has been accepted into the chain’s current history. Wallets and applications may treat that inclusion as an initial success signal, especially for low-risk actions. The block can still be followed by additional consensus steps before the network reaches its strongest settlement state.

Justified and finalized checkpoints
Ethereum’s stronger settlement process works through checkpoint pairs. Validators vote on checkpoints, and the earlier checkpoint becomes finalized after a supermajority link supported by votes representing at least two-thirds of staked ETH. This means an included transaction can be useful well before its containing block is finalized.
The 12-second slot is therefore an opportunity for block production, not a finality promise. An application that needs irreversible settlement should wait for its own finality policy rather than assuming that one slot—or even one included block—has the same meaning as finalized consensus.

For a speed comparison, report the exact milestone: “time to inclusion,” “time to confirmed,” or “time to finalized.” Reporting only “transaction time” hides the risk threshold and makes otherwise reasonable measurements incomparable.
How Solana transaction fees are calculated
Solana’s documented fee has two parts:
- Base fee: charged per signature.
- Priority fee: optional, based on the compute units requested and the price offered per compute unit.
The transaction’s requested compute budget and priority price therefore affect the fee. A simple operation that needs little computation can have a different cost from a complex program call, even before congestion changes the priority market.
Priority is a choice, not a permanent surcharge. During lighter demand, an application may not need to bid aggressively. During contention, a higher priority setting can help a transaction compete for scheduling, while increasing its fee. The exact amount is transaction-specific; a SOL amount cannot be treated as a stable dollar price without a stated exchange rate and timestamp.

How Ethereum transaction fees are calculated
Ethereum charges for the gas a transaction consumes. The fee market has:
- Gas used: the computation and storage work actually consumed by the operation.
- Base fee: the network’s dynamic price component.
- Priority tip: an optional additional amount offered to the block proposer.
In simplified form, the payment is the gas consumed multiplied by the applicable gas price, with the dynamic base fee and any priority tip determining that price. A transaction that performs more computation or touches more state generally consumes more gas than a minimal transfer. When demand rises, the base fee and the tip needed for prompt inclusion can rise as well.
Ethereum’s fee is therefore not a single fixed “transaction charge.” It depends on the operation, gas consumed, current base fee, and the sender’s priority choice. Wallet estimates are snapshots, not guarantees for a transaction that remains pending while conditions change.
Why “Solana is cheaper” is not a complete claim
Solana and Ethereum meter different resources. Solana’s model combines signatures with requested compute units and an optional compute-unit price. Ethereum’s model charges for gas consumed at a dynamic price with an optional tip. A comparison that ignores the operation can make either chain look artificially expensive or cheap.
Operation size matters
A basic transfer, a token movement, a multi-step swap, and a contract interaction do not demand the same amount of execution. Compare the same action on both networks, not a simple transfer on one with a complex application call on the other.
Congestion matters
Priority settings become more important when many transactions compete for limited scheduling or block capacity. A low-priority transaction can cost less but wait longer; a higher-priority transaction can cost more in exchange for a better chance of prompt inclusion. Neither chain has a permanently fixed fee independent of demand.

Currency conversion matters
SOL and ETH prices move independently. Even if a transaction uses fewer native tokens, its dollar cost cannot be inferred without recording the conversion source and time. Quote the native fee first, then identify the exchange-rate timestamp and method if a fiat comparison is needed.

“Transactions per second” is meaningful only when the workload and counting rules are defined. Ethereum documentation describes block gas targets and limits. Solana documentation describes compute-unit limits and a broader scheduler cost model. Those capacity measures are not interchangeable units.
A credible throughput comparison must specify:
- the type and complexity of each transaction;
- whether the figure is a short peak, a sustained interval, or an average;
- how failed transactions are counted;
- whether network-generated or system traffic is included;
- the block, gas, or compute limits in force; and
- the congestion and priority settings used.
Without those definitions, a larger TPS number does not prove that a particular swap, payment, or application workflow will complete faster. The useful question is how the exact workload performs from submission through the status the application actually needs.
Where Ethereum rollups change the comparison
“Ethereum” can mean Ethereum mainnet or an Ethereum-based rollup. Rollups process transactions outside mainnet and post information back to Ethereum for settlement. They can lower user fees and increase effective throughput, but their confirmation and finality path depends on the rollup’s design and on posting and acceptance by Ethereum.
A rollup transaction should therefore be described with its layer. “Cheaper than Solana” is not a meaningful statement unless it identifies the specific rollup, operation, fee conditions, and settlement threshold. Likewise, a rollup’s user-facing confirmation may occur before the corresponding data or state is accepted and finalized on Ethereum mainnet.

Choosing a confirmation policy for an application
Low-risk user interfaces
For a notification, draft state, or other action that can be corrected, an early status may be acceptable. On Solana, processed can serve flows that explicitly tolerate rollback. On Ethereum, inclusion can be an initial acknowledgement. The interface should label the state accurately instead of calling it final.
Ordinary production actions
Solana’s guidance points to confirmed for most production user-facing status. The application should continue tracking the signature and handle a later status change rather than discarding the transaction record after the first optimistic response. Ethereum applications should likewise define how much post-inclusion evidence their workflow requires instead of relying on a vague “confirmed” label.
Irreversible off-chain actions
Use the strongest settlement state your risk model requires. On Solana, wait for finalized before releasing an external asset or making a permanent off-chain record. On Ethereum, wait for finalized checkpoint treatment when irreversible settlement is the requirement. The extra wait is a deliberate trade-off for stronger consensus assurance.

A practical checklist for comparing two transactions
- Identify the layer. Record Solana, Ethereum mainnet, or a particular Ethereum rollup.
- Describe the operation. Use equivalent actions, such as the same type of transfer or application call.
- Record the status threshold. Note inclusion, processed, confirmed, finalized, justified, or finalized checkpoint.
- Capture network conditions. Include the observation time, congestion, and priority settings.
- Record the native fee. Keep SOL and ETH amounts separate before any currency conversion.
- State the conversion method. If quoting dollars, include the rate source and timestamp.
- Check for rollback exposure. Do not trigger an irreversible external action on an optimistic status unless the workflow is designed for that risk.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Equating inclusion with finality
A transaction in a block is not automatically irreversible. Use the network’s strongest status when the action cannot be undone.
Calling a 12-second Ethereum slot a finality guarantee
The slot schedule describes proposal opportunities. Checkpoint finality requires the two-thirds-stake supermajority link and can occur later.
Comparing an early Solana status with Ethereum finality
Processed, confirmed, and finalized are distinct Solana commitments. Compare equivalent risk levels rather than selecting whichever label produces the smaller time.
Using a fixed fee in a variable market
Both networks’ costs vary with the operation and demand. State the transaction, fee components, priority choice, and observation time.
Using TPS as a substitute for user experience
Capacity figures do not tell you how long a specific transaction waits, whether it fails, or when your application may safely act. Measure the complete path and define the workload.
Bottom-line comparison
Solana can provide an earlier user-facing status through its processed and confirmed commitments, while its finalized status is the appropriate threshold for irreversible actions. Ethereum’s 12-second slots support regular block production, but inclusion is followed by checkpoint justification and finalization backed by a two-thirds stake supermajority. Neither chain’s fee is constant: Solana combines per-signature and optional compute-unit priority charges, while Ethereum prices gas with a dynamic base fee and optional tip. The honest answer to “which is faster or cheaper?” is always conditional on the layer, workload, congestion, priority setting, and finality threshold.
