Solana is geographically broad but not evenly distributed across stake or infrastructure. The Solana Foundation’s June 2025 Network Health Report counted 1,295 consensus validators active in 40 countries and reported a voting-power Nakamoto coefficient of 20, using stake data dated April 18, 2025. Those figures describe a published snapshot, not a live 2026 dashboard. They also measure different things: validator count, voting-power concentration, country distribution and hosting-provider concentration are related but not interchangeable.
The practical answer to “How decentralized is Solana, and where are its validators located?” is therefore multidimensional. Solana has substantial participation across countries and data-center providers, yet a large share of stake was concentrated in a few countries and hosts in the cited snapshot. Understanding that distinction is more informative than quoting one validator total or one decentralization score.

What decentralization means on Solana
Decentralization is not a single number. A network can have many validator identities while most voting power depends on a much smaller group. It can also have validators in dozens of countries while many of those machines rely on the same infrastructure company. A useful assessment separates at least three dimensions.

Stake concentration and consensus power
Solana validators process transactions and vote in consensus. Those votes are weighted by the amount of stake delegated to each validator, so a validator with a small identity footprint can carry less influence than one with substantial delegated stake. The official staking documentation explains that delegating stake increases a validator’s voting weight; delegation does not transfer token ownership to the validator.

This is why “1,295 validators” should not be read as 1,295 equally powerful participants or 1,295 independent operating organizations. The number is a count of consensus-validator identities in the Foundation’s 2025 snapshot.
Geographic distribution
Country distribution indicates how widely validators and their stake are spread across jurisdictions. A broader spread can reduce shared exposure to a regional internet outage, a natural disaster, a government order affecting local nodes or damage to regional infrastructure. Country labels are still only an attribution method in the report; they do not prove who operates a validator or identify every physical dependency.
Hosting-provider distribution
Data-center and cloud-provider distribution measures a different risk. One provider can host machines in several countries, so a country count can look healthy while a common company, network, power system or management plane remains a single point of failure. Conversely, validators in one country may use many unrelated providers. Geographic and provider diversity must therefore be examined separately.
How Solana’s voting power works
Consensus participation is stake-weighted. A validator’s influence comes primarily from the stake delegated to it, not simply from running a server or appearing as a distinct identity. Delegators can choose validators, and the resulting stake allocation changes the weight of those validators’ votes.
For readers evaluating decentralization, this creates two different populations:
- Validator identities: the visible set of consensus participants.
- Voting stake: the economic weight behind their consensus votes.
The two sets overlap but are not equivalent. A count-based metric is useful for measuring participation breadth; a stake-based metric is needed to estimate how quickly consensus influence could become concentrated.

What the June 2025 snapshot reported
The following figures come from the Solana Foundation’s June 2025 Network Health Report and related Foundation material. The report’s underlying stake-distribution data for the Nakamoto calculation was dated April 18, 2025.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Measure | Published value | What it indicates | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consensus validators | 1,295 | Number of validator identities in the June 2025 snapshot | Does not show equal voting power, independent ownership or provider independence |
| Voting-power Nakamoto coefficient | 20 | Minimum number of validators needed to reach approximately one-third of stake under the report’s method | Threshold metric, not a complete decentralization score; based on stake data dated April 18, 2025 |
| Countries with active validators | 40 | Jurisdictional breadth of active validator locations | Country count hides stake concentration and common providers |
| Data-center providers | More than 100 | Provider diversity reported by the Foundation | Provider attribution does not by itself reveal network, power or ownership independence |
Because these are dated snapshots, they should not be presented as live 2026 readings. Validator membership, delegated stake and hosting locations can change as operators join, leave, move infrastructure or receive new delegations.
Where Solana’s validator stake was located
The Foundation’s country table placed Germany first by stake share, followed by the United States and the Netherlands. The report gave these shares:
| Country | Share of stake | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | 23.55% | Largest country share in the cited June 2025 report snapshot |
| United States | 17.37% | Second-largest country share in that snapshot |
| Netherlands | 14.36% | Third-largest country share in that snapshot |
These three countries together accounted for more than half of the stake shown in those entries, even though validators were active in 40 countries overall. That contrast is the key lesson: geographic participation can be broad while voting stake remains clustered in a few locations.
The report also observed that validator locations had begun clustering around major data centers and low-latency cities, including Germany. A location table should therefore be read as a distribution of attributed stake and validator infrastructure, not as proof that every operator in a country is exposed to the same event or that every country has comparable influence.
Where Solana’s infrastructure was hosted
The provider table revealed concentration that a country count alone could not show:

| Hosting provider | Share of stake | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| TeraSwitch Networks | 24.28% | The largest named provider share in the cited snapshot |
| Latitude.sh | 21.42% | A second large provider concentration, independent of country totals |
| Amazon AWS | 5.98% | A material but smaller named provider share in the same table |
The report said validators were active across more than 100 data-center providers, but the largest providers still held substantial portions of stake. This is not a contradiction. Many small providers can coexist with heavy stake concentration at a few large hosts.
Provider concentration creates correlated operational risk. If a hosting company suffers a control-plane failure, network outage, policy change or security incident, validators in multiple countries could be affected simultaneously. Geographic dispersion reduces some regional risks; it does not eliminate dependence on a shared provider.
Why geography and provider diversity matter
The Foundation describes several failure scenarios that illustrate the difference between the two dimensions:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- An underwater-cable attack could disrupt connectivity between regions.
- A government could order nodes in its jurisdiction to shut down.
- A disaster could disable a region or data center.
- A data-center company could compromise, suspend or accidentally interrupt infrastructure used by many validators.
In the first three cases, country and regional spread can reduce correlated exposure. In the fourth, provider diversity matters even when machines are distributed across countries. The Solana Foundation summarized the principle this way: “A healthy blockchain needs both geographical and data center distribution of stake and validators.”
What the Nakamoto coefficient of 20 tells you
The voting-power Nakamoto coefficient in the report was 20. Under the Foundation’s definition, it is approximately the minimum number of validators whose combined stake reaches the one-third threshold associated with censoring transactions or stopping consensus. It is calculated from the stake distribution dated April 18, 2025, and was published in June 2025.
A lower number would mean that fewer validators control the specified threshold; a higher number would mean stake is spread across more validators. The metric is valuable because it converts a complex stake distribution into a concrete threshold question: how many validators would an adversary need to compromise to reach that level of voting power?

It is not a complete decentralization score. It does not, by itself, tell you:
- Whether the validators are operated by independent organizations.
- Whether they share a hosting provider, network carrier, power source or management system.
- How many countries contain the stake.
- How resilient the network would be to a regional outage below the one-third threshold.
- Whether the distribution changed after April 18, 2025.
Two networks could have the same coefficient while having very different country and provider profiles. Conversely, a network could have many countries and providers but a low threshold coefficient if stake is concentrated among a small set of validators.
Why low latency can pull validators together
The report links recent clustering to the economics and performance of consensus. Timely vote credits can favor lower-latency placement, encouraging operators to locate near major connectivity hubs. The report also points to economic opportunities associated with Jito-related block-engine locations as a reason some infrastructure has gathered around particular centers.
This creates a performance-versus-resilience tradeoff. Concentrating near efficient network routes can improve communication and help validators earn timely vote credits, but it can increase shared exposure to a city, facility or provider. Spreading machines farther apart can improve geographic resilience while adding latency or bandwidth costs.
The report expected DoubleZero to provide more bandwidth and lower latency, potentially allowing validators to spread geographically without suffering the same timely-vote-credit penalties. That was an expectation stated at publication, not a confirmed outcome. It should not be treated as proof that geographic concentration has already been solved.

1. Check the stake threshold
Record the Nakamoto coefficient, the threshold it represents and the date of the underlying stake data. Confirm whether the calculation concerns one-third stake, another threshold or a different definition. Do not compare coefficients across networks until those definitions and dates match.
2. Check geography by stake, not only by country count
Start with the number of countries, then inspect how much stake sits in the largest countries. A 40-country footprint can still be top-heavy if a few countries hold most of the stake. Also distinguish validator count from stake share; a country with many small validators may have less consensus influence than one with fewer, heavily delegated validators.
3. Check hosting concentration independently
Look for the largest provider shares and the total number of providers. Ask whether providers operate in multiple countries and whether several validators depend on the same network, facility or management platform. A broad provider count does not automatically mean low correlated risk.

The Foundation’s own cross-chain table is a comparison made under that report’s methodology. It should not be treated as a universal ranking unless the compared networks use equivalent identity attribution, stake dates, thresholds and provider definitions.
How delegators affect decentralization
Delegators influence the distribution of voting power by choosing where their stake is assigned. Solana’s staking documentation states that delegation increases a validator’s voting weight while the token holder retains ownership. A delegator can therefore affect concentration without operating a validator.
Stake pools can bundle many participants’ stake and issue pool tokens, according to the official stake-program documentation. That mechanism can make participation easier, but the decentralization effect depends on how the pool distributes stake among validators. A pool that spreads stake broadly has a different concentration profile from one that delegates heavily to a small set.
A hardware wallet such as a Ledger Nano is named in Solana’s staking documentation as one tool for stake operations. That is a key-management choice, not a measure of validator geography and not evidence that a hardware wallet improves network decentralization.

For a current assessment, collect all three categories on the same date:
- Obtain the latest validator and stake distribution, recording the publication date and the date on which stake was measured.
- Calculate or verify the voting-power threshold metric using the stated one-third definition and validator identities used by the publisher.
- Separate validator count from stake-weighted count so small and large participants are not treated as equivalent.
- Review country shares, including the largest countries and the cumulative share of the top few.
- Review hosting-provider shares and identify whether one provider spans several countries.
- Note network-carrier, facility and power dependencies when that information is available; provider labels alone cannot establish full independence.
- Recheck the figures after major changes in staking, validator participation, hosting infrastructure or consensus networking.
This approach avoids presenting a historical snapshot as a live measurement and makes clear which resilience question each statistic answers.
