Keep cash and unstaked SOL for obligations that may arise soon, use native staking for the simplest long-horizon yield sleeve, and use liquid staking only for a controlled portion that genuinely needs transferability or DeFi utility. Liquid staking can add flexibility, but it also adds smart-contract, liquidity, governance and concentration risks.
What each treasury option actually does
Native SOL staking
Native staking delegates SOL to a validator through Solana’s protocol. The validator helps process and secure the network, while the delegating treasury receives staking rewards after validator commission and network conditions are taken into account. Solana describes delegation as a shared-risk, shared-reward model: validator uptime, commission, the amount of SOL staked across the network and inflation all affect the result.

Rewards are issued once per epoch, approximately every two days. Solana’s staking FAQ lists an initial annual inflation rate of 8%, a 15% year-over-year inflation decrease and a long-term annual inflation rate of 1.5%. Those figures describe the protocol’s inflation schedule, not a guaranteed return to a treasury. The effective reward rate changes with the active stake base, validator performance, commission and other network conditions.

Liquid staking
A Solana stake pool accepts SOL and issues an SPL staking derivative representing the pooled position. The derivative can generally be transferred or used in decentralized-finance applications while the underlying pool remains staked. This creates utility that native delegation does not provide, but it also introduces another asset, another protocol and a market price that can diverge from the value of the underlying SOL during stress.
Marinade offers both native staking and mSOL. Its native option does not require smart-contract interaction and does not issue mSOL. Its liquid option issues mSOL and delegates through a pool; the Marinade FAQ describes a pool of more than 100 high-performing validators. Treat that validator count as a description of the cited FAQ, not as a current guarantee.
JitoSOL combines ordinary staking rewards with MEV rewards. Jito’s documentation describes JitoSOL as non-custodial, usable in DeFi and built on Solana’s stake-pool program, and says the system has completed audits. Those properties can improve composability, but audits and a stake-pool design do not eliminate smart-contract, governance, validator-selection, market or liquidity risk.

Cash normally means fiat or cash equivalents and is intended to preserve nominal spending power. Unstaked SOL remains exposed to SOL’s market price even though it is immediately transferable. A policy should therefore distinguish the amount needed in cash from the amount that can safely remain in liquid SOL.
How the choices compare
| Criterion | Cash or unstaked SOL | Native staking | Liquid staking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Meet near-term obligations and preserve access | Earn protocol staking rewards on a long-horizon SOL reserve | Earn staking-related rewards while retaining a transferable token |
| Liquidity | Cash is most certain; unstaked SOL is transferable but price-volatile | Lower liquidity than an unstaked balance because the position must be made available before use | Derivative can usually be transferred or used in DeFi, but its market price and redemption liquidity can weaken |
| Reward source | None from Solana staking | Protocol inflation and staking rewards, net of validator commission | Staking rewards, plus any protocol-specific distribution such as MEV for JitoSOL |
| Additional technical risk | Little or none from staking protocols | Validator, delegation and custody risk | All native-staking risks plus smart-contract, pool, governance and derivative-market risk |
| Price exposure | Cash can avoid SOL exposure; unstaked SOL has full SOL exposure | Full SOL exposure | SOL exposure plus the possibility that the derivative trades below or above underlying value |
| Operational burden | Manage wallets, banking and approvals | Select validators, monitor commission and performance, and manage staking state | Manage the provider, derivative custody, liquidity venues, contract risk and redemption procedures |
| Best fit | Obligations due soon or a contingency reserve | Reserve with a long horizon and no expected need for immediate transfer | A limited sleeve with a documented need for transferability or DeFi composability |
Choose by liquidity horizon first
The first question is not which token has the highest advertised yield. It is when the treasury may need the assets and how certain the redemption path must be.
Near-term obligations
Match payroll, taxes, vendor invoices, debt service and collateral requirements with cash or readily transferable SOL. Do not count a liquid staking token at its full face value unless the policy has verified its market depth and redemption process. A stress event can create a discount precisely when the reserve is needed.

Long-horizon reserve
A reserve that is not expected to be spent for a long period can favor native staking. It avoids the extra derivative and smart-contract layer while still earning staking rewards. The treasury must still set validator-selection rules, custody controls and a process for making the balance available when circumstances change.

Transferable or DeFi-enabled sleeve
Liquid staking is appropriate only when the additional utility has a measurable purpose, such as settling a position without fully exiting staking or using a defined DeFi strategy. If the treasury cannot explain why it needs that utility, native staking is usually the simpler choice.
A practical treasury policy framework
Write the policy before acquiring a staking position. It should address at least these eight dimensions:
- Liquidity horizon and certainty: list obligations by date, currency and maximum tolerable delay. Define the minimum cash and unstaked-SOL reserve that must remain available.
- SOL price exposure: decide whether the treasury’s liabilities are in fiat, SOL or another asset. A reserve that is liquid but still denominated in volatile SOL may not cover a fixed fiat bill after a price decline.
- Reward source and variability: document that native rewards depend on inflation, active stake, validator uptime and commission. For liquid staking, document any additional MEV or protocol-specific rewards without treating them as fixed APY.
- Protocol and smart-contract risk: identify the stake-pool program, contracts, upgrade authority, audit history and emergency procedures. An audit is evidence about a review, not a guarantee against future defects.
- Validator and provider concentration: impose limits on any one validator, stake pool or governance group. Review concentration periodically rather than assuming a large provider is diversified.
- Custody and governance: specify who controls signing keys, who can change validators or protocols, approval thresholds, transaction monitoring and the recovery process for lost or compromised credentials.
- Accounting and tax treatment: obtain advice for the company’s jurisdiction and reporting basis. Staking rewards, derivative-token transactions, impairment and unrealized gains can be treated differently depending on local rules and accounting policy.
- Operational complexity: assign owners for monitoring, reconciliations, redemptions, validator changes, incident response and board or investment-committee reporting.
How much SOL should remain liquid?
There is no universal percentage. Set the floor from a cash-flow forecast rather than from a market yield target.
- List committed payments, expected payroll, taxes, debt service, collateral calls and a contingency allowance over the policy’s liquidity horizon.
- Convert those obligations into the currency in which they must be paid. If an obligation is in fiat, model a SOL price decline rather than assuming today’s SOL value.
- Hold the required fiat or cash-equivalent amount separately from the unstaked-SOL amount needed for on-chain settlement and operational flexibility.
- Add a haircut to any liquid staking token. The haircut should reflect observed trading depth, redemption mechanics, settlement time and the possibility of a discount during stress.
- Only the balance left after those reserves are funded should be considered for native or liquid staking.
Recalculate the reserve after a material change in obligations, SOL price, validator performance, protocol terms or the treasury’s risk tolerance. A reserve policy should also state who can override the normal allocation and what evidence is required.

Native staking: implementation and controls
Before delegation
- Confirm the wallet, signer permissions and recovery backups.
- Define approved validators using objective criteria such as uptime history, commission policy, identity transparency and concentration limits.
- Set a maximum allocation per validator and a review schedule for commission or performance changes.
- Record the expected process for changing delegation or returning the balance to an unstaked state.
During the position
- Reconcile the wallet and staking account to the general ledger at each reporting period.
- Track rewards by epoch and record validator commission and any changes in effective yield.
- Monitor validator outages, commission changes, governance events and network conditions.
- Keep enough unstaked liquidity that an operational decision does not depend on an immediate unstaking outcome.
When exiting
- Confirm the amount required and the destination wallet or exchange account through an independent approval channel.
- Request the change from the staking account according to the wallet’s documented process.
- Wait for the protocol’s applicable state transition before treating the balance as spendable; do not promise an exact timing unless the current network documentation has been checked.
- Transfer or liquidate only after a second signer verifies the amount, destination and resulting reserve level.
Liquid staking: additional due diligence
A liquid staking token is not simply native staking with faster access. The treasury owns a derivative whose value depends on the underlying stake pool, its contracts, its governance and the market in which the token trades.
Questions to answer before buying
- What exactly does one token represent, and how is its exchange rate calculated?
- Can the token be redeemed directly for SOL, and what conditions, queues or fees apply?
- Which contracts can be upgraded, paused or administered, and who controls those powers?
- How are validators selected, removed and weighted?
- Where is the token traded, and what liquidity remains if several holders exit at once?
- What is the documented response to a contract exploit, oracle failure, validator problem or governance dispute?
- What haircut will the treasury apply for internal liquidity reporting and collateral calculations?
mSOL and JitoSOL are not interchangeable descriptions
mSOL is Marinade’s liquid staking token. Marinade also offers a native staking route that does not issue mSOL. JitoSOL is associated with Jito’s pool and combines staking rewards with MEV rewards. Jito’s documentation describes it as non-custodial, DeFi-compatible and built on Solana’s stake-pool program, with completed audits. These design differences affect reward sources and operational dependencies; neither token should be treated as risk-free cash.
Concentration deserves a hard limit
A Marinade Finance SEC filing states that, as of July 2025, Lido, Marinade Finance and Jito together controlled approximately 93.5% of SOL staked. That is a dated filing figure, not a current market statistic. It nevertheless illustrates why a treasury should avoid assuming that several products are independent simply because their token names differ.

Best Value
Stress tests every treasury should run
Forced-sale stress
Assume an obligation arrives while SOL falls sharply and a liquid staking token trades below its underlying value. Test whether cash, unstaked SOL and the approved haircut still cover the payment without an emergency sale.
Protocol outage stress
Assume the liquid staking interface, a redemption route or a DeFi venue is unavailable. The treasury should still know how to pay obligations from its reserve sleeve and how to prevent an operator from bypassing approval controls.
Validator-performance stress
Assume a selected validator suffers extended downtime or changes commission. The policy should specify the monitoring trigger, who can redelegate and how concentration limits are restored.
Key-management stress
Assume one signer is unavailable or a credential is suspected to be compromised. Test recovery, alternate signers, transaction limits and the ability to freeze further movements while preserving access to required funds.
Can a company stake its Solana treasury?
Yes. A company can generally delegate SOL or use a staking pool, subject to its jurisdiction, governing documents, custody arrangements, accounting policy, tax obligations and internal risk controls. The board or investment committee should approve the policy, not merely a wallet transaction. The approval should identify permitted protocols, concentration caps, reserve floors, signer controls, reporting frequency and emergency authority.
Corporate status does not change the underlying risks. A company still has SOL price exposure, validator or pool dependence, possible liquidity discounts and operational obligations. Before implementation, obtain legal, tax and accounting advice specific to the company’s jurisdiction and reporting framework.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Chasing the highest displayed yield: Replace a single APY comparison with a written account of reward sources, fees, volatility and liquidity assumptions. No single current APY is established here; rates vary by epoch, inflation, active stake, validator uptime, fees, MEV and market conditions.
- Calling an LST cash: Report the token separately, apply a liquidity haircut and document the redemption path.
- Staking the entire treasury: Fund the obligation reserve first and retain a separate unstaked balance for operational needs.
- Assuming many validators means no concentration: Check ownership, delegation controls and governance relationships, not only the validator count.
- Ignoring custody: Use segregated approvals, transaction limits, backups and independent verification of every destination address.
- Promising a fixed exit date: Treat unstaking and pool redemptions as processes with conditions; confirm current terms before committing to a payment date.
- Mixing accounting and treasury decisions: Have finance determine recognition, valuation and tax treatment before the first reward or derivative transaction.
A decision rule for the three-way choice
| If the treasury’s priority is… | Default starting point | Required safeguard |
|---|---|---|
| Paying obligations soon with high certainty | Cash, supplemented by a measured unstaked-SOL balance | Maintain a documented reserve floor and currency-matched forecast |
| Earning on a reserve that can remain invested | Native SOL staking | Validator caps, commission and uptime monitoring, custody controls |
| Keeping a staked position transferable or usable in DeFi | A limited liquid-staking sleeve | Provider and protocol caps, token haircut, redemption plan and stress tests |
| Maximizing simplicity and minimizing new dependencies | Native staking or cash, depending on the liquidity horizon | Do not introduce an LST without a documented operational purpose |
The result is usually a layered treasury: cash for fixed near-term spending, unstaked SOL for on-chain flexibility, native staking for the long-horizon core, and liquid staking only where its transferability or DeFi use justifies the added risks. Review that allocation whenever obligations, market conditions, protocol design or concentration data changes.
