Soil Evidence Suggests Maya-Region Farmers Grew Maize by 6,000 Years Ago

Researchers report evidence that people cultivated plants—almost certainly maize—along wetland edges in what is now southern Belize by about 6,000 years ago. The finding points to early food production in the Maya-speaking region, not to the existence of Maya cities or to maize already being a dietary staple.

What the researchers found

A study co-led by researchers at the University of New Mexico reports evidence of extensive cultivation of C4 plants along wetland margins in southern Belize by approximately 6,000 years ago. The researchers interpret those plants as almost certainly maize. Their evidence comes from wetland and upland locations near the ancient city of Uxbenká.

The distinction in wording matters: the study supports early cultivation, while the crop identification is described as highly likely rather than certain for every sampled plot. The evidence also places farming before the emergence of large villages in the area.

The University of New Mexico announcement, published October 6, 2026, describes an interdisciplinary investigation combining soil chemistry and microscopic evidence with archaeological, isotope-ecology and paleoecological approaches, climate records, and knowledge shared by Mopan Maya-speaking farmer Jose Mes. The announcement does not provide sample totals, dating uncertainties or quantified effect sizes.

How farming practices changed over time

The university’s account describes a shift in cultivation settings as climate and population changed. After a dry interval that ended around 4,000 years ago, people began growing C4 crops in upland areas away from wetlands. Wetland-adjacent farming appears to have been largely abandoned when local populations peaked after 2,000 years ago. Upland fields, in contrast, were cultivated during the Maya Classic Period and are still farmed today.

This is a regional sequence summarized by the announcement, not evidence that every community changed its farming practices at the same time or in the same way.

Cultivating maize is not the same as relying on it as a staple

The new finding concerns cultivation, not how much maize people ate. A separate 2020 study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, using isotope evidence from human remains in Belize, reports that maize became a persistently used staple after 4,000 calibrated years BP. That later dietary evidence does not establish maize as a staple at the time the new study’s farming evidence first appears.

How this finding relates to earlier evidence

Earlier studies have pointed to maize cultivation in the Maya region using different evidence. A 2022 regional study summarizes paleoecological indications of increased burning and land clearance associated with maize cultivation after about 5,600 calibrated years BP. A separate review describes early microbotanical traces from archaeological contexts in the Maya area. These findings differ in material studied, location and inference: landscape change or plant traces are not identical to the new study’s soil-based evidence from wetland and upland settings.

Those differences help explain why the dates need not conflict. Evidence for cultivation, evidence that a particular plant was present, and evidence that maize became a dietary staple answer distinct questions. The new report’s specific claim is early cultivation near Uxbenká, with maize identified as the likely crop.
