SoftBank said on June 11, 2025, that personal information associated with 137,156 records relating to its SoftBank and Y!mobile mobile services may have been exposed through contractor UF Japan. The company described two routes: a suspected USB connection at a UF Japan office and a file uploaded to a cloud service. The reported figure is a company estimate, not an independently verified final total; SoftBank had not established a final investigation result in the notice.

What information may have been exposed?

SoftBank said the potentially exposed fields included names, addresses, dates of birth, telephone numbers, sex, age, contract details such as rate plans, service-use information, and internal customer-management numbers. The company said credit-card data, bank-account data, and My Number Card information were not included. SoftBank’s June 11, 2025 announcement said it had not confirmed customer harm caused by use of the potentially leaked data at that time.

How many records did SoftBank report?

SoftBank’s June 11 announcement counted 137,156 potentially affected personal-data records. It attributed 135,022 records to the suspected USB incident and 2,134 to the cloud-file incident. These are the company’s reported figures, not a verified final count.

Separately, SoftBank found 161,132 internal customer-management numbers only. The company said those numbers could not identify individuals outside its internal systems. They are not an additional count of identified people and should not be added to the 137,156 personal-data records.

What were the two reported exposure routes?

Incident path Records attributed by SoftBank What the company reported What was not established
Suspected USB copying 135,022 SoftBank said surveillance footage confirmed that a former employee of a UF Japan subcontractor entered a UF Japan office without authorization in December 2024 and connected a USB memory device to an information-management terminal. The individual said he did not remember taking customer information. The announcement did not establish that all records attributed to this path were copied or misused.
Cloud-file exposure 2,134 SoftBank said a UF Japan subcontractor employee uploaded a file containing customer information to a cloud service, where three people not working on SoftBank’s business could view it. SoftBank said it found no evidence that the three people downloaded the information. The announcement did not establish that it was misused.

These are distinct paths: connecting a USB device does not by itself prove what was copied, while the cloud incident involved a file made viewable to people outside the SoftBank work. SoftBank’s reported figures and evidence should not be read as confirmation that every listed record was downloaded, misused, or tied to a known customer loss.

What did SoftBank say about UF Japan’s security practices?

SoftBank said its investigation found that UF Japan allowed outsiders to enter a floor where personal data was handled, assigned no security guards to that floor, and made false reports in response to SoftBank security audits. These are findings SoftBank reported in its announcement; they are not an independent adjudication.

The company also said it would conduct forensic examinations of all PCs UF Japan used for the work, interview relevant people, and continue checking whether information had leaked. These were announced next steps, not stated completed results.

Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission says in an FAQ framed for health insurance associations that a commissioning organization should receive prompt reporting when a contractor handling personal data has an incident, respond quickly and appropriately, establish reporting and communication arrangements, investigate causes, and take measures such as requiring improvements. This provides general regulator context, not a case-specific ruling on SoftBank’s legal obligations. Personal Information Protection Commission FAQ

Has a final investigation result been published?

The available SoftBank notice is dated June 11, 2025. It describes an investigation in progress and says the company would continue examining devices, interviewing people, and checking for further leakage. That notice does not establish a final outcome or a revised count. The customer inquiry number listed in it was 0800-111-6636, with hours of 10:00–19:00; because the contact information is from 2025, verify its current availability before relying on it.
