If Snip & Sketch freezes in Windows 10, start with the app’s built-in repair action. Go to Settings → Apps → Apps & features → Snip & Sketch → Advanced options, select Terminate if it is available, and then choose Repair. If the freeze continues, return to the same page and select Reset. Repair is the least disruptive option; Reset clears the app’s data and settings.
First, identify what is actually freezing
“Snip and Sketch freezes” can describe several different failures. The app window may stop responding, the capture overlay may never appear, or the entire desktop may become sluggish after you select an area. The quickest fix depends on which component fails.

- App-window failure: Snip & Sketch will not open, opens to a blank or frozen window, or stops responding while you browse saved captures.
- Capture failure: the app opens normally, but selecting an area causes the overlay to hang or the capture never appears.
- Shortcut failure:
Win+Shift+Sdoes nothing, while opening Snip & Sketch from the Start menu still works. - System-wide failure: File Explorer, the taskbar, or other programs also stop responding. That points beyond one Store app and requires Windows-level troubleshooting.
Test the app from the Start menu as well as the keyboard shortcut. Record your Windows 10 version and build, the Snip & Sketch app version, and whether only the shortcut fails. Those details make it easier to separate an app problem from a shell, graphics, or operating-system problem.
Use Repair, then Reset
Microsoft’s Windows app controls provide two escalating actions. Repair attempts to correct the installation while normally preserving app data. Reset is more invasive: it returns the app to a clean state and can remove its local settings and stored data.

- Save work in other programs and restart Windows.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Find Snip & Sketch in the list and select it.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Terminate if the button is available. This closes a stuck background process.
- Select Repair and wait for Windows to finish.
- Open Snip & Sketch and test both a normal capture and
Win+Shift+S. - If the freeze remains, return to Advanced options and select Reset. Confirm the prompt, then launch the app again.
If the Advanced options page does not show Repair, or Repair does not fix the problem, Microsoft’s guidance is to select Reset. Reset may remove preferences and other app-local information, so use it only after trying Repair.
Install Store and Windows updates
A damaged or outdated Store package can leave Snip & Sketch unresponsive. Update the app before moving to a full reinstall.
Update Snip & Sketch from Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Open the Store’s Library or Downloads and updates area, depending on the Windows 10 Store layout.
- Select Get updates and allow Snip & Sketch and related components to install any available updates.
- Restart Windows after the update finishes.
Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, restart when prompted, and check again until Windows reports that it is up to date.
After restarting, test the app window and the shortcut separately. If only the shortcut is still broken, continue with the shortcut-specific checks rather than repeatedly resetting the app.

When Win+Shift+S does nothing
The Win + Shift + S shortcut invokes Windows’ screen-snipping interface. It can fail independently of the Snip & Sketch window. Microsoft Community reports a Windows 10 issue in which the shortcut could prevent capture or fail to open the snipping interface.
Check whether the app itself works
- Open Start and launch Snip & Sketch directly.
- Use the app’s New button to start a capture.
- If a capture works from the app but not from
Win+Shift+S, the installation is probably not the only issue. Continue with updates, restart Windows, and run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter.
Check for shortcut interference
- Try the shortcut after a clean restart, before launching keyboard-remapping or overlay software.
- If you use a compact keyboard, confirm that the Windows key is enabled and that the keyboard sends the expected keys.
- Test the shortcut in a different user account if one is available. A profile-specific failure points to user settings rather than the app package.
Do not treat a working app window and a failed shortcut as identical symptoms. Repairing or resetting the app can help, but a shortcut-only failure may require Windows shell or input troubleshooting.
Reinstall Snip & Sketch when reset is not enough
If Repair, Reset, and updates do not stop the freeze, uninstall and reinstall the app. Reinstallation replaces the package rather than merely clearing its data.

- Open Settings → Apps → Apps & features.
- Select Snip & Sketch and choose Uninstall. Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Microsoft Store, search for Snip & Sketch, and install it again.
- Restart once more, then test a normal capture and
Win+Shift+S.
If Uninstall is unavailable, use the Advanced options page first and apply Reset. Store apps can expose different controls depending on the Windows 10 build.
Run the Windows Store Apps troubleshooter
Windows includes a troubleshooter for problems affecting Store-delivered applications. Its exact location varies by Windows 10 release, so use Settings search for Windows Store Apps troubleshooter if the menu is not where expected.
- Open Settings and search for Troubleshoot.
- Open the troubleshooting settings and locate Windows Store Apps.
- Run the troubleshooter and apply any recommended fix.
- Restart Windows and test Snip & Sketch again.
This step is most useful when more than one Microsoft Store app has launch or update problems. If only Snip & Sketch is affected, the app-level Repair, Reset, update, and reinstall sequence remains the more targeted path.

Repair Windows system files when other components misbehave
When File Explorer, the taskbar, Windows Settings, or several apps also freeze, treat Snip & Sketch as a symptom of possible system-file damage. Microsoft Q&A guidance points to repairing broken operating-system files after app-level steps.
Run System File Checker
- Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
- Run
sfc /scannowand wait for verification to reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows, then test Snip & Sketch.
Use DISM if SFC cannot repair files
- Open an elevated Command Prompt again.
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. - After DISM completes, run
sfc /scannowagain. - Restart Windows and retest the app and shortcut.
System-file repair can take time and may appear to pause. Do not close the window while a command is running. If the entire desktop remains unresponsive or repairs report errors they cannot correct, back up important files before attempting more invasive Windows recovery work.

What to record before seeking further help
- Your Windows 10 edition, version, and build number.
- The Snip & Sketch version shown in its Store listing or app settings.
- Whether the app opens from Start.
- Whether
Win+Shift+Sworks. - Whether the freeze occurs before selecting an area, while selecting it, or after the image is captured.
- Whether other Store apps, the taskbar, or File Explorer also stop responding.
- What happened after Terminate, Repair, Reset, updates, reinstall, and system-file checks.
These observations narrow the fault without assuming one universal cause. A shortcut-only problem, a single frozen app, and a desktop-wide lockup require different levels of intervention.

Windows 10 support ended after October 14, 2025
Microsoft ended free Windows 10 software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes after October 14, 2025. The steps above can restore Snip & Sketch in the short term, but they do not extend Windows 10 support. If freezes persist after app repair, updates, reinstall, and system checks, weigh the time spent troubleshooting against moving the device to a supported Windows release, provided its hardware and software requirements are met.
There is no authoritative prevalence or success-rate statistic for Snip & Sketch freezes, so a fix cannot be promised for every installation. Start with Repair, escalate only as far as the symptoms justify, and treat repeated system-wide failures as a Windows maintenance issue rather than an isolated screenshot-app problem.
