Qualcomm lists Elite CPU clocks up to 4.47 GHz, compared with up to 3.4 GHz for Gen 3, and claims higher CPU, GPU and AI performance. Those are platform-level, vendor-reported figures—not a guarantee that every Elite phone will outperform every Gen 3 phone by the same amount. Qualcomm says results vary with OEM implementation and other factors.
What is the difference between Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Snapdragon 8 Elite?
The main change is the CPU: Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 uses Qualcomm Kryo, while Snapdragon 8 Elite uses Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU. The Elite platform also moves to a newer listed manufacturing process, updates its Adreno GPU and connectivity systems, and adds Qualcomm-reported performance gains. The table summarizes Qualcomm’s platform specifications; it does not describe a matched test of retail phones.

Qualcomm’s launch article also reports that Elite delivered 62% better Chrome browsing responsiveness in Speedometer than Gen 3. That figure applies to the named browser workload and test; it should not be read as a general 62% speed advantage in apps, games, or everyday use. Qualcomm notes that synthetic tests can indicate potential, while real applications and games are the practical measure of device performance. Qualcomm’s October 21, 2024 launch article.
Qualcomm also claims up to 40% improved graphics performance and 40% better power efficiency for Elite’s GPU versus Gen 3, plus 45% faster AI performance. These remain vendor claims about the platforms; they do not promise a particular frame-rate increase or that every AI app will run faster on every Elite phone. How much faster is Snapdragon 8 Elite in a phone?
There is no single percentage that reliably predicts the difference between two phones. Qualcomm explicitly says performance results vary depending on OEM implementation and other factors. The processor’s exact configuration is one variable: Qualcomm lists Elite at up to 4.47 GHz, but also identifies a 4.32 GHz version and a seven-core version, and directs buyers to check OEM specifications for device clock speed. Gen 3 also has a six-core configuration.
Cooling, power policy, software, and the phone’s design affect sustained results. The cited Qualcomm material does not establish a matched independent comparison using the same phone design, software, cooling, and power settings. It therefore cannot support a universal Geekbench, AnTuTu, gaming, or battery-life score for one chipset against the other.

Is Snapdragon 8 Elite better for gaming?
Qualcomm’s stated GPU gains suggest Elite has more graphics potential at the platform level, but they do not establish how a particular game will run. Frame rate and stability depend on the phone’s cooling and power limits, the game, its graphics settings, and software. For a buying decision, look for repeatable tests of the exact phone models, including sustained performance after the device heats up—not just a chipset-level claim or a short peak result.
How to compare phones using these chipsets
Choose between actual handsets, not processor names in isolation. For the models you are considering, verify and compare:
- The exact chipset SKU, core configuration, and clock speed listed by the phone manufacturer.
- Sustained CPU and GPU results under repeatable tests, including temperature and throttling behavior.
- Battery drain under the same workload and conditions.
- Game-specific frame rates at the same settings.
- Software and update support, as well as display, camera, storage, price, and regional availability.
These are useful comparison criteria, not results established by Qualcomm’s platform pages. The sources cited here do not provide current handset availability or prices, or matched retail-phone testing. Verify each model’s regional configuration before buying.
