That clock difference alone does not show how much faster a finished phone will be. Qualcomm has also announced the higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, but no named Gen 6 retail phone or independent Gen 6-versus-Gen 5 test is established in the available information.
What is actually new in Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6?
The confirmed headline is a new premium mobile platform announced by Qualcomm in September 2026, alongside the higher-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Qualcomm says the Gen 6 Oryon CPU can reach up to 5 GHz. Its product information does not, however, provide a full set of comparable Gen 6 specifications in the available material.

That means the announcement establishes the platform and one CPU headline figure, not a device-by-device performance result or a complete list of improvements over Gen 5. Qualcomm positions Gen 6 for next-generation premium smartphones; the announcement does not identify a confirmed retail handset or market-specific availability.

| Specification or claim | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 | Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Peak CPU speed | Oryon CPU up to 5 GHz, according to Qualcomm’s 2026 product page; this is a vendor specification, not an independent measurement. Qualcomm product page | Two prime cores up to 4.74 GHz and six performance cores up to 3.62 GHz in Qualcomm’s 2026 product brief. The brief also notes an alternate 4.6 GHz platform version and says the maximum varies by platform version; check the phone maker’s specifications. Qualcomm product brief |
| GPU, AI, imaging and connectivity comparison | Not stated in the available Gen 6 product information. | Qualcomm documents platform features, but the cited brief’s improvement figures compare Gen 5 with the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite, not Gen 6. Qualcomm product brief |
| Retail phone and regional availability | No named Gen 6 retail phone or regional availability confirmed by the cited September 2026 announcement. Qualcomm announcement | Qualcomm announced Gen 5 on September 24, 2025. It later said the Gen 5 for Galaxy would power Galaxy S26 Ultra globally and Galaxy S26+ and S26 in select regions. | Independent Gen 6 vs Gen 5 benchmark or battery result | Not established. | Not established. |
The CPU figures are not perfectly like-for-like: Gen 5’s brief gives speeds for separate core groups, while the available Gen 6 information gives a maximum Oryon CPU speed. Even as a peak-clock comparison, 5 GHz versus 4.74 GHz does not establish a percentage gain in overall phone performance. Workloads, sustained speeds and power use depend on more than the maximum clock.

Why Qualcomm’s Gen 5 performance claims do not predict Gen 6 gains
Qualcomm’s Gen 5 brief advertises a 20% enhanced CPU, a 37% faster Hexagon NPU, 23% higher GPU performance and 20% lower GPU power consumption. Those are Qualcomm’s vendor-published Gen 5 comparisons with the previous Snapdragon 8 Elite—not measurements of Gen 6 over Gen 5. Qualcomm also cautions that results vary by OEM implementation and other factors.
The brief’s caveat matters because a processor is only part of a phone’s performance. Cooling, power limits, memory, software and device configuration can affect real-world and sustained results. Qualcomm specifically advises consulting OEM specifications for device CPU speed.

What remains unknown about the Gen 6-versus-Gen 5 comparison
The available Gen 6 information does not establish whether Gen 6 improves on Gen 5 in GPU performance, gaming, AI workloads, camera or video capabilities, modem or Wi-Fi features, or efficiency. Gen 5’s documented features cannot be treated as proof of a Gen 6 change. Qualcomm’s Gen 5 brief, for example, calls Gen 5 “The first mobile platform to record in Advanced Professional Video (APV) Codec”; that claim does not confirm Gen 6 support.
A proper comparison on these dimensions needs full platform specifications and tests on retail phones. For a useful device-level comparison, look for sustained rather than just peak performance, frame rates and thermal behavior in games, AI workload performance and power use, camera hardware and software, connectivity in the relevant market, and battery-life testing under disclosed conditions.

Should you buy a Gen 5 phone or wait for Gen 6?
There is not yet enough device-level evidence to recommend waiting solely for a claimed Gen 6 performance advantage. If you are choosing a phone now, compare the actual models available to you: price, regional chipset variant, sustained performance, battery life, camera implementation and software support. Qualcomm’s Gen 5 for Galaxy announcement illustrates why region and device matter: the chipset’s named Galaxy models differed by market.
If a future Gen 6 phone interests you, wait until its maker confirms the model, release timing and regional version, then look for credible tests of that specific device. No particular Gen 6 handset, price, listing or availability is confirmed by the cited announcements.
