Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is the more capable platform on Qualcomm’s published specifications. It offers a faster prime core, an additional performance core, LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0 support, newer wireless standards, a faster theoretical 5G downlink, higher-resolution display support and Quick Charge 5. Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is a lower-cost 4 nm design aimed at phones that prioritize value while retaining modern 5G, 200 MP photography, 4K-class video and on-device AI.

That does not make every 7 Gen 4 phone faster in every situation. Cooling, RAM, storage, camera hardware, software tuning and battery capacity can outweigh the processor badge. The practical choice is simple: buy the 7 Gen 4 when the price premium is reasonable and you want more gaming, display and connectivity headroom; choose the 7s Gen 3 when the phone is substantially cheaper and your use is mostly everyday apps and FHD gaming.

Snapdragon 7s Gen 3

Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 on August 20, 2024. The “s” model is positioned for more mid-tier devices: it keeps selected 7-series features, including on-device AI, while using a narrower set of memory, display and wireless options. Xiaomi was identified as the initial adopter, with Realme, Samsung and Sharp named as companies expected to announce adoption.

Launch timing does not make the newer 7s Gen 3 faster than the older 7 Gen 4. They are different tiers, not successive versions of the same exact design. A 2025 phone with the 7 Gen 4 can therefore be the stronger choice than a later 7s Gen 3 phone if the rest of the hardware is comparable.

CPU architecture: why the 7 Gen 4 should feel quicker

The 7 Gen 4 combines one prime core running as high as 2.8 GHz with four performance cores and three efficiency cores. The 7s Gen 3 uses a 2.5 GHz prime core, three performance cores and four efficiency cores. Both chips list the performance cores at up to 2.4 GHz and the efficiency cores at up to 1.8 GHz.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical difference is not simply the 300 MHz peak. A prime core handles bursty foreground work such as opening an app, applying a filter or completing a short JavaScript task. The extra performance core gives the 7 Gen 4 more room for parallel workloads: exporting photos while other apps remain open, compiling or unpacking game assets, and keeping a busy browser session responsive. The 7s Gen 3’s additional efficiency core favors a layout that can handle background tasks without waking the larger cores as often.

Clock rates are maximums, not constant operating speeds. A phone may lower frequency when its skin temperature rises, when the battery is low or when the manufacturer chooses a conservative thermal profile. Two phones using the same chip can consequently deliver different sustained benchmark and gaming results.

Memory and storage: the hidden difference in responsiveness

Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 supports LPDDR5X memory at up to 4200 MHz, as well as LPDDR5. Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 supports LPDDR5 at up to 3200 MHz and LPDDR4X. The platform specification does not guarantee that every 7 Gen 4 handset uses LPDDR5X; manufacturers can select a lower-cost memory configuration.

Higher memory bandwidth helps when several demanding tasks compete for data. It can reduce stalls while a game streams textures, while a camera application processes a large image, or while many browser tabs are restored. It will not make a phone with too little RAM behave like one with more RAM, so check the actual capacity and memory-management policy in the handset’s specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The storage distinction is more straightforward. The 7 Gen 4 can be paired with UFS 4.0, UFS 3.1 or UFS 2, while the 7s Gen 3 lists UFS 3.1. UFS 4.0 offers a newer interface with more headroom for sequential transfers and queue-heavy workloads, but a phone using UFS 3.1 can still feel fast when its software is well optimized. Storage capacity, free space and the quality of the flash package also influence installation and loading times.

Graphics, displays and gaming

Resolution headroom

The 7 Gen 4 supports WQHD+ displays at up to 144 Hz. The 7s Gen 3 supports FHD+ at up to 144 Hz. A 144 Hz panel can make scrolling and supported games look smoother on either platform, but the 7 Gen 4’s WQHD+ capability gives manufacturers the option of a sharper, higher-resolution screen.

Driving more pixels costs rendering power and energy. A phone maker may ship a 7 Gen 4 device with an FHD+ panel to control price or battery consumption, in which case the display advantage exists in the platform brief but not in that particular product. Conversely, an FHD+ 7s Gen 3 phone can be easier to drive at high frame rates than a high-resolution handset.

Gaming expectations

Both platforms advertise selected Snapdragon Elite Gaming features. That label does not specify a universal frame rate or graphics preset: the game, driver, thermal design, resolution and manufacturer’s performance mode determine the result. The 7 Gen 4’s stronger CPU arrangement, newer memory options and higher-tier graphics capability make it the safer choice for demanding 3D games, longer sessions and future titles.

The 7s Gen 3 is a sensible fit for FHD gaming, competitive titles that scale well to mid-range hardware and players who are comfortable reducing effects or frame-rate targets in the most demanding games. Look for independent tests of the exact phone if sustained performance matters, because a larger vapor chamber can let a lower-tier chip maintain speed while a thin flagship-style design throttles.

Camera, video and on-device AI

Imaging capabilities

Both chipsets support photo capture up to 200 MP and 4K-class video. The 7 Gen 4 specification lists 4K capture at 60 frames per second with HDR and three 12-bit image signal processors. The 7s Gen 3 lists a triple ISP and 4K HDR video, without the same 60 fps qualification in the published brief.

These are processor ceilings, not promises about a phone’s camera. A handset may use a lower-resolution sensor, limit video frame rates, omit HDR modes or reserve high-resolution capture for good lighting. Lens quality, sensor size, stabilization, autofocus, tuning and the camera application generally matter more to finished photos than the 200 MP number.

AI processing

Both platforms include Qualcomm Hexagon NPU capabilities for on-device AI. Typical uses can include image segmentation, voice features, generative editing functions and other workloads that run without sending data to a server, but the exact features depend on the phone’s software and memory. Qualcomm’s feature lists should therefore be read as hardware enablement rather than a guarantee that every AI function appears in every handset.

Connectivity and modem differences

Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0, while Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4. Wi-Fi 7 can provide newer channel and multi-link capabilities when the router, regional spectrum rules and phone antennas support them. A 7 Gen 4 phone that omits the necessary antenna configuration will not deliver every Wi-Fi 7 benefit.

The 7 Gen 4 brief also lists 3GPP Release 17 5G and a peak downlink of 4.2 Gbps. The 7s Gen 3 lists a 2.9 Gbps peak. These figures describe the modem’s theoretical ceiling under ideal network conditions. Carrier spectrum, signal strength, congestion, plan limits, aggregation and regional firmware are normally the limiting factors, so a user is unlikely to see the full difference in an ordinary speed test.

Charging, battery life and thermal behavior

Qualcomm lists Quick Charge 5 for the 7 Gen 4 and Quick Charge 4+ for the 7s Gen 3. Quick Charge is a platform capability; the phone maker chooses the charging circuit, battery size, adapter, cable and software limits. A 7s Gen 3 phone with a larger battery or a higher-wattage proprietary system can recharge faster in practice than a 7 Gen 4 phone that ships with a modest adapter.

The equal 4 nm process class does not establish equal battery life. Endurance depends on screen resolution and brightness, modem activity, refresh-rate policy, application mix, battery capacity, cooling and background software. The 7s Gen 3’s efficiency-core balance may be advantageous for light background work, while the 7 Gen 4 can complete heavy tasks faster and return to a low-power state sooner. Without controlled tests of two specific phones, neither chip deserves a blanket battery-life winner.

How to interpret Qualcomm’s performance claims

Qualcomm reports a 27% CPU-performance increase, 30% faster GPU graphic renderings and a 65% AI-performance improvement for Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 compared with Snapdragon 7 Gen 3. Those figures are Qualcomm’s generational claims; they are not direct measurements against Snapdragon 7s Gen 3.

For Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, Qualcomm reports nearly 20% better CPU performance, up to 40% faster GPU performance, more than 30% better AI performance and 12% overall power savings compared with Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. These are also comparisons with the preceding “s” model, not with 7 Gen 4.

Because the reference phones, software versions, power limits and test methods differ, you should not subtract or combine those percentages to estimate a 7 Gen 4-versus-7s Gen 3 result. Use them to understand each chip’s claimed generational progress, then consult independent tests for the exact handsets you are considering.

When the 7s Gen 3 is the smarter buy

Choose a 7s Gen 3 phone when it is substantially cheaper and your workload is routine: social apps, web browsing, video streaming, navigation, photography in good light and FHD gaming. Put the savings toward more RAM, a larger battery, better cameras or longer software support; those characteristics can improve daily use more than a faster processor on paper.

What phones use these platforms?

Qualcomm’s May 15, 2025 announcement named HONOR and vivo as initial Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 adopters. Its August 20, 2024 announcement named Xiaomi as the initial Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 adopter and said Realme, Samsung and Sharp were expected to announce devices. These statements identify partner plans, not a complete worldwide retail list.

Availability varies by country, launch window and carrier. A processor may be paired with different RAM, storage, cameras and charging hardware in different regions. Check the exact model number and local specification sheet before buying, especially if WQHD+, UFS 4.0, Wi-Fi 7 or a particular 5G band is important to you.

How to compare two actual phones

  1. Confirm the exact chipset. Check the manufacturer’s specification page or the phone’s system-information screen; similar names can be listed differently in retailer databases.
  2. Check RAM and storage type. A 7 Gen 4 device with LPDDR5 and UFS 3.1 may not realize the full advantage available to a model with LPDDR5X and UFS 4.0.
  3. Inspect the display. Record resolution, refresh-rate modes, brightness and whether high refresh is available at the resolution you intend to use.
  4. Review cooling and gaming modes. Look for sustained-performance tests of the exact phone, not just a chipset benchmark from a different design.
  5. Verify camera hardware. Compare sensor sizes, stabilization, autofocus and video modes rather than relying on the maximum megapixel figure.
  6. Check charging equipment. Confirm the included adapter, supported wattage and whether the advertised Quick Charge mode requires a separately purchased charger.
  7. Compare software support and battery capacity. Update policy, battery size and background-management behavior often have a larger long-term effect than a modest processor difference.
  8. Check regional connectivity. Confirm the 5G bands, Wi-Fi features and carrier certification for your country; platform support alone does not guarantee availability.

Common misconceptions

“The newer 7s model must be faster.”

The “s” suffix identifies a different tier, not a universal speed ranking. The mainline 7 Gen 4 has the stronger published CPU, memory, display and connectivity specification even though the 7s Gen 3 was announced earlier in the product cycle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A 200 MP phone will take better photos.”

Megapixel support describes what the image pipeline can accept. Exposure, dynamic range, noise control, focus, stabilization and software processing determine whether the resulting photo is better.

“The maximum modem speed is my expected download speed.”

Peak downlink numbers are theoretical limits. Network deployment and signal conditions determine the speed you actually receive.

“Quick Charge 5 guarantees a faster refill.”

The phone, charger and battery-management system must all support the desired charging mode. The standard alone does not specify the real-world charging time of a particular handset.

Final verdict

On Qualcomm’s published specifications, Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is the clear technical winner: it has the stronger CPU arrangement, faster memory options, optional UFS 4.0 storage, WQHD+ support, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, a higher theoretical 5G ceiling and Quick Charge 5. Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 remains a capable 4 nm mid-range platform for buyers who value price and mainstream performance.

For a purchase decision, compare complete phones rather than chip names alone. If two models are similarly priced and similarly equipped, the 7 Gen 4 is the better long-term performance choice. If the 7s Gen 3 phone costs considerably less, has more RAM or a larger battery, and you mainly use everyday apps or FHD gaming, it can deliver the better overall value.
