Choose the Smeg AFC01 if you want one 7.3-litre cooking chamber and a straightforward single-basket workflow. Choose a Ninja AF400UK if you regularly cook two foods, quantities or timings at once and can use two 4.75-litre drawers. The smaller Ninja AF300 provides the same dual-zone idea in two 3.8-litre drawers (7.6 litres total).
Those are layout decisions, not claims that one brand produces better food. The available specifications do not include a controlled Smeg-versus-Ninja cooking test, matched current prices, or comparable energy and noise measurements. AF400UK product data and AF400EU/AF300EU support information are not proof that every country receives the same controls, accessories, dimensions or warranty. One basket or two zones?
What the Smeg layout changes
With the AFC01, everything goes into one continuous 7.3-litre basket. That is convenient when a meal is one food or when you want to shake, turn or inspect a single batch without coordinating separate drawers. A single chamber also gives you one interior footprint to measure against a dish, loaf tin or other accessory.
The trade-off is that foods with different cooking temperatures or times share the same session. You may need to cook one item first, remove it to rest, then cook the second, or accept a compromise setting. The product listing presents the AFC01 as a single-basket appliance; it does not establish that its two named modes remove the need to manage different foods separately.
What two Ninja drawers enable
The AF400UK and AF300 split the appliance into two cooking zones. You can assign each drawer its own food, quantity and setting rather than mixing foods that need different treatment. This is useful for combinations such as a main and a side, or a fresh item and a frozen item, provided each portion fits its drawer and your local model’s controls support the schedule you want.

Conversely, two small portions can be easier to keep separate than they would be in one crowded basket. The dual-zone concept is therefore a workflow benefit, not a guarantee of simultaneous completion or superior browning; confirm the exact timing and synchronisation features in your local manual.

Questions to ask about your meals
- Do you usually cook one large batch of the same food, or two different foods?
- Would separating vegetarian and meat items, or fresh and frozen items, be useful?
- Are your regular foods wide or tall enough that a divided drawer would force cutting or stacking?
- Do you have counter and storage space for the appliance’s full footprint and for opening two drawers?
Capacity: why 7.3, 7.6 and 9.5 litres are not interchangeable
Smeg Australia lists 7.3 L for the AFC01. Ninja lists 9.5 L for the AF400UK, explicitly made up of two 4.75 L drawers, and Ninja’s support information lists 7.6 L for the AF300, made up of two 3.8 L drawers. The AF400 is described by Ninja’s support page as cooking up to 25% more than the AF300. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement, and it does not describe how much of a particular food can be spread in a single layer.
Think of total capacity as a planning number and drawer capacity as a fit constraint. In the AF400UK, one drawer is 4.75 L, not 9.5 L. In the AF300, one drawer is 3.8 L, not 7.6 L. If you need to cook a single very wide item, the AFC01’s uninterrupted basket may be easier even though its stated total is lower than the AF400’s. If you cook two modest portions, the Ninja drawers can use the available volume more flexibly.
A practical capacity check before buying
- List the three foods you cook most often and note whether each is one large piece, several small pieces or a loose food that needs tossing.
- Measure the widest and tallest item, including any dish or mould you actually use.
- Compare those measurements with the internal dimensions and maximum-fill guidance in the exact local manual; the headline litre figure does not provide those dimensions.
- Decide whether the food must remain in one layer. If it does, usable surface area may matter more than volume.
- Leave clearance around the appliance and room to pull a drawer or basket fully open without hitting a wall or another appliance.
Cooking modes and what they do—and do not—tell you
Smeg AFC01 modes and programs
Smeg’s listing promotes two cooking modes: Crispy and Juicy+Crispy. Smeg describes the latter with the product copy, “Dual cooking modes go beyond crisp alone – Crispy and Juicy+Crispy – for golden results on the outside and tenderness within.” That is the manufacturer’s description, not a laboratory result or an independent taste assessment.

Ninja AF400UK functions
Ninja lists six functions for the AF400UK: Max Crisp, Air Fry, Dehydrate, Roast, Bake and Reheat. The names describe intended operating modes, but the function count is not a quality score. A six-function appliance is not automatically better or worse than one with two promoted modes and seven food labels because the labels group features differently.
The cited material does not establish a complete AF300 function list. Treat AF400UK controls as AF400UK information, not as a promise that every AF300 regional variant has identical programmes, temperatures or accessories.
Counter space, dimensions and electrical details
Smeg Australia’s page gives the AFC01 dimensions as 322 × 310 × 310 mm. A Ninja German support page for the AF400EU gives 32.5 × 41.5 × 27 cm. These figures come from different regions and different model suffixes, and the source pages do not use a common orientation convention in the comparison material. Convert neither into a universal local measurement without checking the manual and retailer specification for your exact appliance.
Before purchase, measure the counter depth from the wall to the front edge, the width available with neighbouring appliances in place, and the vertical clearance beneath cabinets. Also check the space needed to pull a basket or drawer out and to vent hot air. A machine that fits when closed may not be usable if a drawer cannot open fully.

Smeg Australia’s listing specifies 1,450 W and 220–240 V for the AFC01. Comparable power data was not established for the Ninja models here, so do not estimate electricity cost or circuit requirements from the Smeg figure. Use the electrical rating on the local Ninja label or manual, and plug each appliance into an outlet that meets local safety requirements.
Accessories, warranty and what is actually documented
The Smeg Australia listing includes a basket and grill rack and states a two-year parts-and-labour warranty. Those are Australian listing details; package contents and warranty terms can differ by country, retailer and model suffix. Confirm them in writing if a rack or a particular warranty period affects your decision.
No comparable Ninja accessory package or warranty value was established in the cited material. Do not treat the absence of a stated item as proof that it is excluded, and do not assume that an AF400UK package matches an AF400EU or AF300EU package. Open the local product page and manual and check the box contents, replacement-part process and warranty exclusions.
Which model suits common kitchen workflows?
Choose the Smeg AFC01 when one continuous basket is the priority
- You normally cook one food or several foods that share a temperature and finish time.
- Your regular item is broad and benefits from an uninterrupted basket rather than two smaller drawers.
- You prefer one set of controls and one basket to shake, inspect and wash.
- The Australian-listed 7.3-L format, included rack and stated warranty match your local package after verification.
This choice is about simplicity and the physical shape of the cooking space. It is not evidence that the AFC01 is faster, quieter, easier to clean or tastier; the available sources do not provide a controlled comparison for those outcomes.

Choose the Ninja AF400UK when separate zones solve a daily problem
- You often cook two foods with different settings or quantities.
- You want 4.75 L available in each of two drawers and can use the larger 9.5-L total without overcrowding either drawer.
- The six listed functions—Max Crisp, Air Fry, Dehydrate, Roast, Bake and Reheat—cover the modes you actually use.
- Your counter can accommodate the local AF400 footprint and drawer-opening clearance.
The AF400’s “up to 25% more than AF300” statement is useful for understanding Ninja’s own product positioning, but it is not a test result and should not be converted into a promise about servings or cooking speed.
Choose the Ninja AF300 when you want dual-zone control in a smaller capacity

Price: how to interpret the available number
T3 reported a UK price of £199.95 for the Smeg AFC01 in an October 9, 2026 review. That is a dated editorial snapshot, not a current price guarantee or a universal price for other countries. No matched current Ninja price was established alongside it, so a fair price verdict cannot be calculated from these figures.
When checking prices, compare the same currency, tax treatment, delivery charge, return policy and model suffix. Verify whether a listing is a temporary promotion and whether it includes the rack, trays or warranty service you expect. A lower headline price for a different regional variant is not a like-for-like saving.
A decision process you can use in five minutes
- Start with the layout: select one basket if your meals are usually one batch; select two zones if separate foods or timings are routine.
- Check the largest food: measure it and compare it with the local basket or drawer dimensions, not just litres.

- A larger AF400 total does not prove every dish fits better. Each AF400 portion still occupies one 4.75-L drawer.
