She found several foods cooked well, while homemade chips took 47 minutes and still disappointed, and roast chicken browned unevenly. The “healthiest-cooking” description is a personal impression, not a comparative health finding: the available product information and review provide no health study or calorie-reduction evidence for this model.
What “Dual Flavour” means on the Smeg AFC01
“Dual Flavour” does not mean two baskets. The AFC01 has one removable basket and offers two cooking approaches: standard hot-air cooking, labelled Crispy, and Juicy+Crispy, which combines hot air with moisture introduced from a built-in water tank. SMEG says, “The water tank enables the Juicy+Crispy mode, which introduces moisture during cooking to help keep food tender and juicy.” That is the manufacturer’s description, not independent proof of a health benefit or guaranteed result.

Helen McCue reports that moisture-assisted cooking is built into selected presets rather than offered as a separate manual mode. Manual mode provides standard air frying. The seven presets listed by SMEG are chicken wings/legs, meat, fish, shrimps, chips, vegetables and roast chicken.

Check the model code for the market where you plan to use the appliance. SMEG’s UK listing is for AFC01WHMUK; its EU listing is AFC01WHMEU. Their published capacity figures differ.

SMEG lists a basket and grill rack, seven customizable programs and manual setting for the UK model. It describes the basket and rack as having a PFAS-free ceramic coating and as dishwasher-safe; the UK product page says all components are dishwasher-safe. Those are manufacturer statements about materials and cleaning, not independent assessments of health outcomes. Confirm the exact product code and plug before buying rather than assuming regional models are electrically interchangeable.
How it performed in Helen McCue’s tests
Ideal Home published McCue’s review on 27 September 2026. The following timings and observations are her individual tests of the unit, not results from a controlled comparison across air fryers.

The spread matters more than any single timing: McCue reported useful results with fish, salmon, halloumi, vegetables and chicken thighs, but weaker performance with chips and uneven browning on chicken. The review does not establish how the appliance performs across all foods, batch sizes or kitchens.
Fit, access and controls
McCue found the appliance attractive and said it did not take up a large worktop footprint. The flip-open body gives access to the removable basket and rack, and the viewing window has a light. Allow for the rear vent and the space needed above and behind the hinged lid when choosing a position.

In her account of the tested unit and manual, temperature adjusts from 40–200°C in 5-degree increments, and the timer runs from 1 to 60 minutes in one-minute increments. She also reports a delayed start adjustable from 5 minutes to 24 hours. These control details are her description of the tested model, while SMEG’s regional product pages give the broader temperature range and 60 ml tank specification.
Is the AFC01 one of the healthiest air fryers?
There is not enough evidence here to rank the AFC01 as the “healthiest” air fryer. SMEG promotes hot-air cooking with little to no oil and describes the basket coating as PFAS-free ceramic. The cited product information and hands-on review provide no named health study, calorie-reduction figure or comparative health statistic for this model. Cooking with less added oil may suit some recipes, but that does not establish that this appliance produces healthier food than other air fryers or cooking methods.

Should you buy the Smeg AFC01?
It is most compelling if you value its unusual Smeg styling, viewing window, flip-open access and Juicy+Crispy option—and are comfortable with McCue’s reported inconsistency. If fast, even browning of chips or a whole roast chicken is your priority, her results are a reason to be cautious rather than assume the presets will deliver.

Ideal Home names the Ninja MAX PRO AF180UK as an alternative and reports positive roast-chicken results in its own testing. At the date of McCue’s review, Ideal Home described that 6.2-litre model as about £70 cheaper and said its reviewer roasted a 1.5 kg chicken with excellent results. Those are that publisher’s comparison and test observations, and the price and availability may have changed.
