A bank loan is usually the closer fit when your business has a defined funding need, can afford scheduled repayments and wants to retain ownership. A grant may suit a project that matches a specific programme, while investment funding may suit a business willing to share ownership or take on a debt-and-equity deal. “Growth fund” can mean any of these, so compare the structure and terms—not just the label.
What does “growth fund” mean?
There is no single financing product called a growth fund. The phrase may refer to a grant, a government-backed loan or an investment fund providing debt, equity or a combination. Those options create different obligations, so identify the actual structure before comparing it with a bank loan.

- Grant: money awarded for a defined purpose, usually subject to eligibility and spending rules. It generally does not involve a loan repayment schedule, but award terms may require reporting or permit repayment if conditions are breached.
- Government-backed loan: borrowing made through a lender, sometimes supported by a public guarantee. The business still has a debt to repay; the guarantee is not a grant to the borrower.
- Investment fund: a fund may lend, buy an ownership stake, or combine debt and equity. Equity exchanges capital for ownership and can bring governance or control implications.
The UK and US examples below illustrate how these choices work in particular jurisdictions; they are not universal terms. Programmes, eligibility and availability can change.

How the financing options compare
| Decision factor | Bank or term loan | Grant or public funding | Equity or investment fund |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repayment and cash flow | Repay principal and interest on the agreed schedule. Fixed or variable rates affect payment certainty; assess affordability against forecasts and weaker-revenue scenarios. | A grant normally has no scheduled loan repayments. Check award terms for eligible costs, reporting obligations and any repayment or clawback conditions. | Equity has no scheduled loan repayment, but gives an investor an ownership share. A mixed deal may also include debt obligations. |
| Ownership and control | Usually does not dilute ownership, though security and loan covenants may constrain the business. | Typically does not exchange ownership, subject to the scheme’s rules. | May dilute ownership and affect governance or control; the deal’s rights and exit provisions matter. |
| Access | Lenders assess creditworthiness, ability to repay and their own requirements; collateral may be required. | The business, location, sector and project must meet the particular award’s criteria. | Fund criteria may depend on the business’s stage, sector, location, size and growth prospects. |
| Permitted use | Depends on the product and lender. Some programmes allow a range of eligible business purposes. | Restricted to the award’s stated purpose and eligible costs. | Depends on the investor and negotiated deal. |
| Key terms to examine | Total cost including fees, rate type, term, security, guarantees and default consequences. | Eligibility, deadline, match funding, eligible costs, reporting and repayment triggers. | Ownership share, governance rights, investor involvement, return expectations and exit terms. |
These are structural differences, not a recommendation for a particular business. In the UK, government guidance advises borrowers to account for repayments in cash-flow forecasts and warns that assets provided as security may be at risk if repayments are missed.

When each option may fit
A loan for a defined need and manageable repayments
A loan may be worth comparing when you can identify what the money will fund and how the business will repay it from expected cash flow. It can preserve ownership, but that does not make it low-risk: interest, fees, security and payment timing all affect the real cost and consequences. There is no stable universal rate comparison; pricing depends on the provider, borrower and agreed terms.
A grant for an eligible project
A grant can reduce the need to borrow when a programme’s purpose matches your project. It is not unrestricted money: applications take time, eligible spending is limited, and reporting may be required. Check the award document for conditions that could require funds to be returned.

Do not assume a public agency offers general-purpose grants to businesses. The US Small Business Administration (SBA) says it does not provide grants for ordinary business startup or expansion; its listed grant activity is limited to specific areas such as research, exporting, manufacturing support and intermediary activities.
Investment for a business prepared to share ownership
Equity funding may be relevant when the business accepts dilution and investor involvement in exchange for capital without scheduled loan payments. A fund’s investment criteria and deal terms vary. If financing combines debt and equity, assess both the repayment obligations and the ownership and governance consequences.

What official programmes illustrate
The figures below are programme examples, not general market limits or promises of approval. They are specific to the named programmes and sources.
| Example | Published figure and scope | What it means for a business |
|---|---|---|
| US SBA 7(a) loans | The SBA 7(a) loans page, accessed in 2026, lists a maximum loan amount of $5 million. | Eligible uses listed include working capital, machinery and equipment, real estate and certain debt refinancing. Eligibility includes being a US-based, for-profit, operating small business and demonstrating creditworthiness and reasonable ability to repay. The SBA provides a guarantee to lenders; applicants work with a participating lender rather than borrowing directly from the SBA. |
| US Small Business Investment Companies (SBICs) | The SBA Investment capital page, accessed in 2026, states typical ranges of $250,000 to $10 million for loans, $100,000 to $5 million for equity investments, and $250,000 to $10 million for mixed debt-and-equity investments. | These are typical programme-page ranges, not guaranteed terms. Individual SBIC profiles and target businesses vary. |
| UK Growth Guarantee Scheme | The UK Office of the Small Business Commissioner’s funding-options page, accessed in 2026, describes a 70% guarantee for participating lenders. | This is a lender guarantee, not a 70% grant to the business. Check current scheme status, lender participation and borrower terms with the administrator or lender. |
The SBA’s 7(a) maximum is not a general ceiling for US bank loans, and the SBIC ranges should not be treated as universal investment-fund terms. The examples show why country, programme and product details must accompany any headline figure.

How to choose and prepare
- Define the requirement. Write down the amount, timing and specific use of funds. A project grant, equipment loan and equity investment are not interchangeable just because each might support growth.
- Test repayment capacity. Build a cash-flow forecast that includes the payment schedule, interest and fees, then model a lower-revenue case. For loans, compare written offers on total cost and consequences of default, not rate alone.
- Check conditions before applying. For grants, verify geography, sector, business stage, project eligibility, deadlines, match funding, permitted costs and reporting. For loans, establish whether collateral or guarantees are required and what assets are at risk.
- Evaluate ownership terms. For investment, understand the proposed ownership share, governance rights, expected return, investor role and exit provisions. Ask how those terms interact with any debt in a combined deal.
- Confirm the programme is current. Obtain current terms from the official administrator or lender before committing time or relying on an advertised figure.
Where to check in the UK and US
United Kingdom
The GOV.UK finance and support directory can be filtered by region and support type, including finance, grants and equity. A directory listing is a starting point, not confirmation that a scheme is open or that a particular business qualifies; check the programme’s current rules with its administrator.
