Smashtest offers a different way to author Selenium tests: write shared steps once, then indent alternatives beneath them to describe multiple possible paths. Its central idea is test permutations expressed as a tree, not a claim that tests run faster or are more reliable. The project documents Node.js-based setup, Selenium WebDriver for web UI testing, local and remote execution options, and branch-oriented reports. Whether that model fits your team depends on how readable and manageable the resulting branches are in your own suite.
What Smashtest is—and what this review can establish
Smashtest describes itself as “an open-source tool and language for rapidly generating tests,” according to its getting-started guide. Rather than expressing every test as a separate, conventional sequence of imperative code, you write steps in a tree-like format. Indented alternatives under a shared step represent different paths through a test.
The product documentation presents examples for web UI and API testing, with Selenium WebDriver used for its browser-based UI path. The defining feature is the authoring model: shared actions and alternative choices combine into generated branches. That may make scenario permutations easier to describe, but it does not by itself establish faster execution, greater reliability, or better results than another framework.
The project pages cited here do not provide a release-specific compatibility matrix or establish current maintenance status, independent comparative results, or adoption figures. Treat setup instructions as project documentation, not confirmation that a particular browser, driver, or Selenium version is currently compatible. No independent test run or benchmark is represented in this review.

How the tree-shaped test model works
Write common steps once
A Smashtest file uses indentation to show which actions share a path and which are alternatives. In the project’s examples, a browser is started and navigated to a page; beneath those shared actions, alternative clicks or inputs can be described. The common setup is not rewritten for every possible path.
Indent alternatives to create branches
Each alternative beneath a step represents a possible continuation. When alternatives appear at multiple points, the tool can combine them into a larger set of generated test cases. For example, browser choices and input values can form permutations of a scenario. The exact number of branches depends on the alternatives you describe and how they combine.
This approach is a natural fit to evaluate when a team thinks in scenarios and wants to see shared steps alongside their variations. As an editorial inference from the documented model, it may be less appealing if your team prefers ordinary imperative test code, depends on familiar patterns from another automation ecosystem, or needs very fine-grained control over a large generated branch set. Try representative tests before deciding that the visual structure is clear at your suite’s actual scale.

What the examples cover
The project’s UI testing capabilities page shows browser and input permutations. The documentation also includes API examples. These show the breadth of the documented authoring model; they are not independent evidence that the tool is a better fit than your current framework.

Install the documented prerequisites
The getting-started instructions call for Node.js, followed by Smashtest installed through npm. For web UI tests, they also call for Selenium WebDriver infrastructure. The documented Smashtest install command is:
npm install -g smashtest
That command installs Smashtest globally through npm. The cited pages do not identify a release-specific Node.js, Selenium, browser, or driver compatibility matrix, so check those versions against your own environment before relying on the instructions.

Choose how WebDriver is provided
The project documentation describes several ways to supply WebDriver for browser testing:
- WebDriver managers: The guide notes that a manager may require a separate process and that browser major-version updates can affect driver setup.
- Manual driver and server setup: This gives you direct responsibility for installing the required driver and server.
- Selenium Grid or a cloud endpoint: The documentation describes connecting to remote execution infrastructure instead of relying only on a local browser.
These choices trade setup and upkeep against the execution environment you need. Confirm browser and driver versions, how the WebDriver process is started, and whether your intended local, Grid, or cloud endpoint works with your project’s current Smashtest setup. The documentation’s existence of an execution option is not a compatibility guarantee for every provider or version.

The official docs describe command-line execution and a REPL for stepping through commands, plus configurable options, reports, screenshots, and an option to skip passed branches so successful branch state can carry across runs. They say the process exits with code 1 if any branch fails and 0 otherwise. Those exit codes are useful in a shell or CI workflow, but a passing exit code says only that the run had no failing branches under that execution; it is not a general reliability guarantee.

The documentation also describes rerunning failed branches as a way to mitigate environmental or Selenium flakiness. A retry can help distinguish an intermittent failure from a repeatable one, but it does not remove the underlying cause of flaky behavior.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Limits and behavior to account for
Report and concurrency ceilings
The project documentation states that reports are limited to 500 branches for each result category, such as passed or failed, and that currently running branches are limited to 20. These are documented product limits, not benchmark results. If your permutations could approach those limits, check how your run is divided and whether the resulting reports expose the cases your team needs to review.
Headless behavior varies
The docs note that headless behavior differs by browser. Do not assume a headless run reproduces a headed run identically across browsers; validate the browsers and execution mode you plan to use.

How to evaluate Smashtest for your team
A small trial should answer questions the product pages alone cannot settle about your codebase and environment. Compare a representative suite with your existing approach rather than treating generated branches as an automatic improvement.
- Choose a realistic scenario. Include shared setup and enough meaningful alternatives to reveal whether the tree is readable.
- Count and inspect generated branches. Confirm that the permutations match intended coverage and remain practical to run and review.
- Validate the dependency stack. Record Node.js, Smashtest, Selenium, browser, driver, and any Grid or cloud endpoint versions used; confirm setup and browser compatibility in that environment.
- Test the execution mode you need. Run locally and, if relevant, against your intended remote endpoint. Check how parallel work and the documented running-branch limit affect your suite.
- Review the debugging loop. Decide whether reports, screenshots, REPL stepping, and failed-branch reruns make it easier for your team to diagnose real failures.
- Assess ongoing fit. Verify project maintenance and ecosystem support from current sources, then compare the learning curve and upkeep with the approach you already use.
Or skip the browser setup
If your immediate task is to capture a website screenshot rather than build and run a Selenium test, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first. Its API returns an image or PDF from a single GET request; it is not a replacement for Smashtest’s test-authoring and branch-generation model.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of Stripe as WebP:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; and an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.

Verdict
Smashtest is worth evaluating if your team wants to describe test alternatives as indented, shared-step trees and inspect the generated paths. Its documented workflow includes Node.js installation, WebDriver choices for UI testing, branch reports, and command-line controls. The key adoption questions are whether the tree stays understandable at your suite’s scale and whether setup, compatibility, maintenance, and debugging fit your environment. The cited project pages do not establish independent performance advantages or current compatibility across specific versions.
