Start with hardware you already own. Samsung says some TVs, monitors, soundbars, Family Hub refrigerators, SmartThings Stations and earlier SmartThings hubs include SmartThings Hub functionality. If you need a separate unit, Samsung US currently lists the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, with Matter 1.5.0, Thread 1.4 and Zigbee 3.0 support. Check the exact model, radio protocols, regional availability and device certification before purchasing.
When do you actually need a SmartThings hub?
A SmartThings hub connects devices that cannot communicate directly with the SmartThings app or with your home network. The deciding factor is the device’s protocol, not simply whether its packaging says “SmartThings.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Compatible Wi-Fi devices: Samsung’s regional guidance says these can connect to the SmartThings app without a separate hub.
- Zigbee, Matter, Thread or Z-Wave devices: These require a hub that supports the relevant protocol. A hub that supports one protocol does not automatically support all of them.
- LAN integrations: Earlier SmartThings hub documentation includes local-network devices among supported integrations, but verify support for the exact current model and integration.
Buying a hub before checking your devices can leave you paying for radios you do not need—or missing one you do.

| Existing hardware | Potential benefit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Selected Samsung TVs and monitors | May operate as a SmartThings hub without another dedicated box | Exact model eligibility and whether a SmartThings Dongle is required for Zigbee or Thread |
| Selected Samsung soundbars | May provide hub functionality as part of the soundbar | Model-specific hub and radio support |
| Selected Family Hub refrigerators | May provide a built-in hub for compatible devices | Exact refrigerator model and supported protocols |
| SmartThings Stations | Compact Samsung hardware that can provide hub functionality on eligible models | Regional model, firmware and protocol support |
| SmartThings Hub v2 or v3 | Existing owners may continue using an earlier dedicated hub | Current support, condition, replacement availability and the integrations you need |
Samsung says some 2022-or-earlier products need the SmartThings Dongle VG-STDB10A for Thread and Zigbee, while most models released after 2023 have an integrated dongle. “Most” is not the same as “all”; consult the compatibility information for your exact model before buying the accessory. The dongle guidance does not establish that the accessory adds Z-Wave support.
Current dedicated option: Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2
Samsung US lists the Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 as a dedicated SmartThings hub. The listing identifies Matter 1.5.0, Thread 1.4 and Zigbee 3.0 support. Samsung’s displayed US price was $119.99 when accessed in October 2026; it is a volatile listing value, not a guaranteed price or worldwide offer.
This hub is the clearest fit when you need a standalone controller and your devices use the three protocols identified in the current listing. Before ordering, check whether every planned device uses Matter, Thread or Zigbee and whether the exact product is certified for SmartThings in your country.
Do not infer Z-Wave support from older SmartThings material. Samsung’s 2022 Matter announcement says SmartThings Hub v2, Hub v3 and the earlier Aeotec Smart Home Hub remained controllers for Matter while continuing to support Zigbee, Z-Wave and LAN devices. That announcement is useful historical context, but it is not a current specification for Hub 2. If Z-Wave is essential, confirm it in the current regional product specification or choose hardware whose current documentation explicitly lists it.
How the main options compare
| Option | Best fit | Documented protocol or capability | Important checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 | New buyer needing a dedicated hub | Matter 1.5.0, Thread 1.4 and Zigbee 3.0 in the Samsung US listing | Regional model and stock; exact device certification; Z-Wave requirement, which is not established by the current listing |
| SmartThings Hub v2/v3 or earlier Aeotec Smart Home Hub | Existing owner or carefully evaluated second-hand purchase | Samsung’s 2022 announcement identifies Matter controller operation and continued Zigbee, Z-Wave and LAN support | Support status, hardware condition, price, software lifecycle and required integrations |
| Samsung product with built-in hub | Households that already own an eligible TV, monitor, soundbar, refrigerator or Station | Built-in SmartThings Hub functionality on specified models | Exact model; integrated radios; whether a dongle is needed |
| SmartThings Dongle VG-STDB10A | Owners of specified Samsung products that require an accessory | Enables Thread and Zigbee on documented compatible models | Exact Samsung model and protocol eligibility; do not assume Z-Wave support |
Match the hub to your devices’ protocols
Matter
Matter is a device standard rather than a radio by itself. A Matter device may use Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, so check both the Matter requirement and the transport used by the device. Samsung identifies Hub v2, Hub v3 and the earlier Aeotec hub as Matter controllers in its 2022 announcement, while the current Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2 listing identifies Matter 1.5.0.

- Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
- Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
- Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
Thread
Thread is a low-power mesh network. A hub must include a Thread border-router function to bring Thread devices into your SmartThings installation. Samsung’s current Hub 2 listing identifies Thread 1.4. On Samsung TVs and other built-in-hub products, determine whether Thread is integrated or requires the VG-STDB10A dongle.
Zigbee
Zigbee devices need a Zigbee-capable hub or dongle. The Hub 2 listing identifies Zigbee 3.0. Samsung’s built-in-hub guidance says certain older products need the dongle for Zigbee, whereas most models after 2023 integrate the required hardware.

Z-Wave remains relevant if you already own locks, sensors or switches using it. Samsung’s 2022 announcement confirms continued Z-Wave support for the then-referenced Hub v2, Hub v3 and earlier Aeotec hub. The current Hub 2 listing summarized above does not establish Z-Wave support, so verify the exact regional specification before buying for a Z-Wave installation.
Wi-Fi and LAN
Wi-Fi devices can often be added directly, according to Samsung’s regional FAQ. LAN support is documented for the earlier hub generation in Samsung’s Matter announcement. In both cases, check the exact integration and supported functions rather than assuming every device on your network will appear in SmartThings.
Verify exact device compatibility before checkout
“Works with SmartThings” indicates certification, but Samsung warns that supported products and functions can vary by brand, country and time. A compatible device may expose only some of its features in SmartThings.

- Write down the exact model number, not just the product family or marketing name.
- Identify the protocol the device actually uses: Wi-Fi, Matter over Thread, Matter over Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave or another integration type.
- Open the SmartThings-compatible-device directory for your region and search for that model.
- Read the listed functions. Confirm that the sensor values, lock controls, scenes or other features you need are supported—not merely that pairing is possible.
- Check availability in your country. Samsung says catalogs can vary by country and change without notice.
- For Samsung hardware, verify whether the product has an integrated hub or needs the VG-STDB10A dongle.
Repeat this check for every device in a planned system. One unsupported lock or lighting bridge can determine which hub you should buy.

Choose a dedicated Hub 2 when
- You do not own an eligible Samsung product with built-in hub functionality.
- Your planned devices use Matter, Thread or Zigbee, matching the protocols in the current Hub 2 listing.
- You want a new, dedicated controller rather than relying on second-hand Hub v2 or v3 hardware.
Use existing Samsung hardware when
- You already own a model Samsung lists as having built-in SmartThings Hub functionality.
- The model’s integrated radios cover your devices, or Samsung documents the required dongle for it.
- You have confirmed that the specific device functions you need are supported in your region.
Consider an earlier hub only when
- You already have one and its integrations continue to meet your needs.
- A used unit is inexpensive enough to justify its condition and uncertain support horizon.
- You specifically need a capability documented for that generation, such as the Z-Wave support cited in Samsung’s 2022 announcement.
Buy the dongle only when your model requires it
The VG-STDB10A is a conditional accessory, not a universal upgrade. Buy it beside a Samsung model whose documentation explicitly requires it for Zigbee or Thread. It is not evidence that every Samsung TV or monitor can become a full multi-protocol hub.
Setup checklist for a new hub
- Inventory devices. Record each model and protocol, separating Wi-Fi devices from hub-dependent devices.
- Confirm regional support. Check the Samsung catalog and compatibility directory for your country; US listings and prices should not be generalized globally.
- Prepare the controller. Place the dedicated hub or eligible Samsung product where it can communicate reliably with your network and mesh devices, then connect it according to the product instructions.
- Add the hub in SmartThings. In the SmartThings app, use the add-device flow and select the exact hub or Samsung host model. Complete account and network prompts shown for your region.
- Add one device at a time. Use the device’s documented pairing process, then assign it to the appropriate room. Pairing a device does not guarantee that every feature is supported.
- Test the functions you will automate. Trigger sensors, operate switches or locks, and verify status updates before building routines.
- Document the installation. Keep model numbers, firmware notes, the hub location and any dongle details. This makes later replacement or troubleshooting much easier.
When multiple hubs help: Hub Groups and backup
Samsung describes Hub Groups as a way to extend Zigbee and Thread networks across eligible hubs. Routines can run faster without an internet connection when devices are connected to the same Hub Group. Eligibility and setup rules apply, so adding a second hub solely for range is not automatically worthwhile.
Samsung also describes Hub Backup. A secondary hub can become primary after the primary goes offline, either manually or automatically after 10 minutes if no action is taken. This transfer feature is different from the automatic periodic backup of hub and device data to SmartThings Cloud.
Hub Replace cannot be used while hubs are in a Hub Group, and some hubs have special eligibility behavior. Treat multi-hub features as a deliberate design choice: confirm that your exact hubs qualify, decide whether you need coverage or failover, and read Samsung’s current instructions before rearranging an existing installation.

Common problems and fixes
“My Wi-Fi device works without a hub, so why does my sensor not?”
They may use different protocols. Wi-Fi devices can connect directly in Samsung’s regional guidance, while Zigbee, Matter, Thread and Z-Wave devices need a hub supporting the relevant protocol. Identify the sensor’s protocol and compare it with the hub’s documented radios.
“The app sees my Samsung TV, but Zigbee devices will not pair.”
The TV may be an eligible built-in hub that still requires the VG-STDB10A dongle, particularly on a 2022-or-earlier model. Verify the exact model and whether Samsung documents a dongle requirement.
“A device says Works with SmartThings but a feature is missing.”
Certification does not promise identical functionality across products or regions. Recheck the directory entry for the exact model and the specific function you need. Samsung can update supported products and functions.
“A second-hand Hub v2 or v3 is cheaper.”
Compare the saving with hardware condition, current support, regional availability and the integrations you require. Samsung’s Matter announcement is from 2022; do not treat it as a guarantee of present-day stock or support.
“My backup hub did not take over immediately.”
Automatic takeover is described as occurring after 10 minutes when no manual action is taken, and only eligible hubs participate. Confirm eligibility and whether the hubs are configured as a Hub Group, because Hub Replace has separate restrictions.
What to buy in common scenarios
| Your situation | Most sensible starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You need a new standalone controller for Matter, Thread and Zigbee devices | Aeotec Smart Home Hub 2, subject to local availability | Those protocols are identified in Samsung’s current US listing |
| You own an eligible Samsung TV, monitor, soundbar, refrigerator or Station | Use its built-in hub after model verification | You may avoid buying another controller |
| Your eligible Samsung product is documented as needing Zigbee or Thread support | SmartThings Dongle VG-STDB10A | It is intended for specified models and protocols |
| You rely on Z-Wave | Verify a hub whose current specification explicitly lists Z-Wave | Older Samsung documentation confirms Z-Wave for earlier hubs, but the current Hub 2 summary does not |
| You want extra mesh range or failover | Investigate an eligible Hub Group or backup arrangement | Samsung supports these features under specific eligibility and configuration rules |
The short version is simple: identify the protocols first, reuse eligible Samsung hardware second, and only then choose a dedicated hub. For a new standalone purchase, Hub 2 is the current Samsung-listed path for Matter, Thread and Zigbee; for Z-Wave or unusual integrations, require explicit model-level confirmation before spending money.
