Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Short answer: The ISP (image signal processor) normally handles the camera’s core image pipeline, converting sensor data into a usable preview or photograph. The NPU (neural processing unit) runs neural-network inference, such as recognizing a face, scene or document. In a modern phone, they often work together: the NPU identifies what is in the frame and the ISP applies image-processing settings suited to it.
“ISP versus NPU” is therefore a division of functions, not a universal choice between two physically separate chips. Both blocks are commonly integrated into one mobile system-on-chip, and the exact path depends on the processor, camera software and feature.

What does an ISP do in a phone camera?
The ISP is the camera’s image-signal pipeline. An image sensor does not output a finished JPEG; it measures incoming light as electrical data, usually through a Bayer color filter array or another sensor-specific arrangement. The ISP receives that data and reconstructs it into the preview and final image.

It also lists noise reduction, high dynamic range (HDR) and other processing stages that improve the resulting image. Those functions are the conventional heart of computational photography, even when no neural network is involved.

Typical ISP responsibilities
- Exposure control: selecting shutter speed, analog gain and other settings, or applying corrections after capture.
- Focus assistance: processing focus-detection data and helping the camera choose or track a subject.
- White balance and color: estimating the color of the illumination and converting sensor responses into believable colors.
- Demosaicing: reconstructing full-color pixels from the sensor’s filtered measurements.
- Noise reduction: suppressing random noise while preserving edges and texture.
- HDR processing: combining exposures or sensor readouts so bright and dark portions retain usable detail.
- Lens and sensor corrections: compensating for shading, defective pixels, distortion or color variation where the phone’s calibration data supports it.
- Preview and video processing: producing a low-latency viewfinder feed and applying many of the same operations continuously for video.
The ISP is optimized for predictable, high-throughput image operations. It can process every frame from a camera sensor with relatively consistent timing, which is essential for a responsive preview and stable video.
What does an NPU do for camera features?
An NPU is an accelerator for neural-network inference. A neural network is trained to recognize patterns, and inference is the act of applying that trained model to new data. In a camera, the model may classify a scene, detect a face, estimate depth, segment a person from the background or recognize text.
Samsung describes its NPU as supporting image analysis and recognition. Qualcomm’s description of its Hexagon NPU likewise focuses on accelerating on-device AI inference and coordinating AI work across heterogeneous processor resources. These are vendor descriptions of particular architectures, not a cross-vendor performance ranking.

- Face and eye detection: locating faces and facial landmarks for focus, exposure or portrait effects.
- Scene recognition: identifying categories such as food, foliage, night, snow or a sunset so software can select a suitable treatment.
- Subject segmentation: separating a person, pet or object from its background for portrait blur or editing.
- Depth estimation: inferring distance from one or more cameras when a dedicated depth sensor is not providing all the information.
- Text and document analysis: finding text, correcting perspective and preparing a document for recognition or sharing.
- Learned image enhancement: running a trained model that denoises, restores detail or maps one image representation to another.
The NPU does not automatically replace every conventional camera operation. A model might tell the camera where a face is, while a dedicated ISP still performs demosaicing, color conversion and much of the exposure and HDR pipeline.
How the ISP and NPU cooperate
A useful mental model is a four-part chain: the sensor captures light, the ISP builds an image, the NPU analyzes content, and camera software coordinates the result. The order is not fixed for every phone or feature. A preview may be analyzed while it is being produced, and a later neural result may change settings for subsequent frames.
Portrait example
For a portrait, an AI model can detect a face and estimate the boundary between the subject and the background. The camera application can use that information to place focus and exposure on the face and to generate a mask for background blur. The ISP then applies the selected exposure, white balance, noise reduction and other image operations. Samsung uses this recognition-guided optimization as an example of the two blocks working together.
Scene example
If the model recognizes a sunset, software may choose a scene-specific tone or exposure strategy. If it recognizes foliage, food or a night scene, it can select different processing parameters. Recognition does not guarantee a particular visual style on every phone; it only supplies information that the device’s camera pipeline may use.

Document example
A document mode can use a neural model to locate the page, identify its corners and distinguish text from the surrounding table or floor. The image pipeline can then correct perspective, even out illumination and sharpen edges. On another implementation, some of those transformations may themselves be learned operations executed on an NPU.
The vendor’s concise explanation
Samsung Semiconductor states: “Combined with the image recognition capability of the NPU, ISPs can deliver even more precise photo optimization based on the objects in the frame.” That sentence describes cooperation rather than an either/or choice.
Are the ISP and NPU separate chips?
Not necessarily. In a smartphone, “ISP” and “NPU” usually identify functional blocks inside a larger mobile SoC. They may have separate hardware datapaths and memory interfaces, but they can share system memory, scheduling logic and software frameworks. Samsung notes that the actual components vary by processor.
This distinction matters when reading specifications. A phone can advertise an NPU without exposing which camera features use it. It can also have a sophisticated ISP while using little neural processing in the stock camera application. The labels describe capabilities; they do not reveal the complete per-feature schedule.
Can learned image processing run on an NPU?
Yes, in some designs. A conventional ISP is built from specialized stages with fixed or configurable operations. A learned image-signal-processing pipeline uses neural networks for one or more of those stages. For example, a model might learn to reduce noise, reconstruct detail or map a raw sensor image toward a finished image.
A 2021 CVPR Mobile AI workshop report studied learned image-signal-processing pipelines running on mobile NPUs. That work demonstrates that imaging workloads can be expressed as neural-network inference; it does not establish that a particular current phone routes its production camera pipeline through an NPU in the same way.
The practical boundary is therefore implementation-dependent. A phone may use the ISP for the regular sensor path, the NPU for recognition, and a mixture of both for a computational feature. Another phone may move a learned enhancement stage onto an AI accelerator while retaining conventional ISP stages around it.

A camera frame’s path from sensor to saved photo
The following sequence is a conceptual model, not a universal wiring diagram. Individual processors can combine, reorder or repeat stages.
- Light reaches the sensor. The lens projects the scene onto photosites, which produce electrical measurements.
- The sensor delivers raw data. Readout timing, gain and sensor mode determine the information available to downstream processing.
- The ISP prepares the image stream. It applies sensor-specific corrections, demosaicing, color processing and other foundational operations while also producing the preview.
- Camera software requests or adjusts capture settings. Exposure, focus and white balance can change as the scene and subject change.
- The NPU analyzes content when a feature requires it. A model may detect faces, classify a scene, estimate depth or create a segmentation mask.
- Results flow back into the pipeline. The camera can use detections to select exposure, focus, tone, blur or other parameters for the current or next frame.
- Multiple frames may be combined. HDR, night and motion-related features can merge information from several exposures, with both conventional and learned processing involved.
- The ISP and software finish the output. Sharpening, color rendering, compression and metadata handling produce the preview, video frame or still image that the user saves.
Because this work happens quickly and repeatedly, the phone may analyze a preview frame before the shutter is pressed and then apply a related decision to the captured frames.
Does the NPU process the photo itself?
Sometimes, but “process” can mean two different things. The NPU may analyze an image and return information such as “a face is here” or “this is a document.” It may also transform image data by running a learned denoising, segmentation or enhancement model. Those are distinct uses.
In many camera pipelines, the ISP remains responsible for the regular pixel operations and the NPU supplies recognition or a specialized neural stage. A phone’s marketing material may call the overall result “AI photography” even when only one part of the pipeline is neural. Conversely, an AI accelerator may be involved in a substantial image transformation without the user seeing an NPU label in the camera interface.
Only model-specific documentation or testing can establish the route for a particular feature. Generic statements about an NPU do not prove that the stock camera uses it for every saved photograph, and an ISP specification does not prove that no neural processing occurs.

| Camera function | Typical ISP role | Possible NPU role | What can be concluded without model-specific documentation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic preview and capture | Sensor correction, demosaicing, color, exposure, focus support, noise reduction and output formatting | Optional analysis of faces, scenes or motion | The ISP is central; NPU involvement is implementation-dependent. |
| Face-aware exposure or focus | Applies exposure and focus decisions to the image stream | Detects faces or facial landmarks | Cooperation is a common architecture pattern. |
| Portrait blur | Renders the image and applies the blur or compositing stage | Generates a subject mask or depth estimate | Neural segmentation or depth is plausible, but the exact route is not stated generically. |
| Scene optimization | Applies selected color, tone and noise parameters | Classifies the scene | Recognition can guide ISP settings; the visual result depends on tuning. |
| Night and HDR modes | Aligns, merges and renders multiple exposures or sensor readouts | May estimate motion, denoise or enhance details | Both conventional and learned stages may be present. |
| Document scanning | Corrects color, contrast and output geometry | Finds page boundaries, text or layout | AI assistance is common, but hardware assignment remains implementation-dependent. |
How should you compare phones or chipsets?
If your goal is better photographs, compare the implemented camera system rather than treating an NPU number as a camera-quality score. The following checklist keeps the comparison tied to observable behavior.
1. Examine the camera hardware
Check the sensor size and generation, lens aperture and focal lengths, stabilization, autofocus system and the data path supported by the processor. A powerful AI block cannot recover information that a small, noisy sensor or poor lens never captured.

2. Identify the ISP’s supported pipeline
Look for documentation about sensor modes, HDR, video formats, noise reduction, autofocus and the number of camera streams supported for the specific processor. An ISP name by itself does not tell you how the phone configures it.
3. Ask what the neural model actually does
“AI camera” is too broad to be useful. Determine whether the claim refers to scene classification, face detection, segmentation, depth, denoising, super-resolution or an editing feature. Also check whether the work is performed on-device and whether it applies to stills, video, preview or only a special mode.

4. Compare matched output
Use the same scene, lighting, subject movement and camera settings when evaluating phones. Inspect low-light noise, motion blur, skin tones, HDR highlight retention, text edges and video consistency. A credible quality ranking requires controlled testing; component labels alone cannot provide one.
5. Check software support
The camera application, operating-system version, driver and model weights determine how hardware is used. A processor may support a feature that a particular handset does not enable, or a software update may change the processing path and output.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a larger AI specification does not guarantee better photos
NPU throughput is an AI-compute capability, not a universal image-quality measurement. Camera quality also depends on the sensor and optics, calibration data, ISP algorithms, model quality, memory bandwidth, shutter timing and the manufacturer’s tuning choices.
Two phones with similar sensors and NPUs can produce different results if one has better motion handling or color calibration. Two phones with different NPUs can look similar if their camera software uses comparable models and parameters. Vendor specifications are useful for understanding what a platform can accelerate, but they do not establish a cross-phone ranking.
Performance, power and latency considerations
Camera processing is a real-time workload. The preview must remain responsive, video must maintain its target frame rate and the shutter should not wait unnecessarily for a model to finish. Dedicated ISP circuits are efficient for repetitive image operations, while an NPU is designed to execute neural-network layers efficiently compared with a general-purpose CPU.
Best Value
Moving data between blocks also has a cost. A feature may need to resize a frame, place it in shared memory, run inference and send a mask or enhanced image back to the rendering pipeline. Engineers balance model size, precision, memory traffic, thermal limits and latency. A smaller model that runs reliably in every frame can be more useful than a larger model that forces delays or drains the battery.
These trade-offs are why a phone may use a low-resolution preview for recognition, trigger a more detailed model only after the shutter press, or process selected frames instead of every frame. The behavior is a design choice, not evidence that one block is “better” in all circumstances.
Common misconceptions about ISP and NPU camera work
“The NPU takes the photo.”
The sensor and image pipeline still acquire and render the photograph. The NPU may analyze the frame or perform one learned stage, but that does not make it the sole camera processor.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

“The ISP cannot do AI.”
An ISP can include configurable or learned functions, and the overall SoC can route neural work through different accelerators. The term ISP describes an imaging role, not a rule that neural methods are forbidden.
“Every AI camera feature uses the NPU.”
Some features use conventional algorithms, GPU compute, CPU code or dedicated accelerator blocks. A product page that mentions an NPU does not identify the hardware used by every camera mode.
“More NPU TOPS means a better camera.”
Without a specific model, precision, memory and software workload, a throughput figure is not a photo-quality score. It also says nothing about lens quality, sensor performance or tuning.
“ISP and NPU are always two separate chips.”
In phones they are commonly functional blocks integrated into one SoC. Their physical organization and shared resources vary by processor.
What current documentation can and cannot tell you
Official explanations are strongest when they describe a particular function. Samsung’s ISP material details exposure, focus, white balance, noise reduction and HDR, while its AI-camera explanation gives a concrete example of NPU recognition guiding ISP optimization. Qualcomm’s Hexagon material explains on-device AI inference and heterogeneous processing for its platform.
Those pages do not disclose the complete scheduling of every camera feature in every handset. The 2021 CVPR workshop example shows that learned ISP pipelines can run on mobile NPUs, but it is not a specification for a current commercial phone. Treat architecture diagrams and marketing terms as functional descriptions unless the manufacturer publishes model-specific routing information.
The practical answer to “which chip handles camera AI?”
The ISP usually handles the camera’s core transformation from sensor measurements to a preview or finished image. The NPU handles neural-network inference such as recognizing faces, scenes, depth or text, and it can sometimes run learned image-processing stages. In many phones, the camera software combines both: NPU analysis informs decisions, and the ISP executes much of the high-throughput image pipeline. To judge a real phone, evaluate its sensor, optics, software and matched photo output rather than choosing solely by the presence or size of either block.
