The quickest privacy improvement on a smart TV is to open its privacy or consent menu and disable automatic content recognition (ACR), personalized advertising, and voice or microphone features you do not use. Then remove unnecessary apps, review permissions, install manufacturer updates, and check account and network access. Menu names and paths differ by brand, model, region, and firmware, so use the labels shown on your own television.
Why smart TV settings deserve a privacy check
A connected television can receive more than the video from a built-in streaming app. Depending on the platform and the choices made during setup, it may process viewing information, details about HDMI or antenna inputs, voice commands, app permissions, device identifiers, and network data. A privacy review lets you decide which of those functions are worth the convenience.

The controls are usually spread across several menus rather than one master switch. Viewing-data consent, advertising preferences, microphone access, app permissions, software updates, accounts, and network controls should therefore be checked separately.
1. Disable automatic content recognition (ACR)
ACR is generally the most consequential privacy setting on a smart TV. It can create fingerprints of content and associate them with information about what is watched and when. On some platforms, the scope includes the television antenna and devices connected through HDMI, such as cable or satellite boxes, not just apps running inside the TV.

Roku Smart TV Experience
Roku describes its Smart TV Experience as collecting what is watched and when it is watched from the TV antenna and connected devices when the feature is enabled. To withdraw consent on a Roku device, open Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience and deselect Automatic Content Recognition (ACR). The wording may differ slightly by model or software version; look for the Smart TV Experience or ACR control in the television’s privacy menu.
Equivalent controls on other platforms
- Samsung: Look for Viewing Information Services or a similarly named viewing-data control in the privacy or terms menu.
- LG: Look for Live Plus or an ACR-related consent option. LG says ACR processing can involve content-identification fingerprints, device information, the content source (such as Live TV or HDMI), network information, and consent settings. LG also says collection stops when ACR is disabled or consent is withdrawn.
- Other platforms: Search the privacy, terms, advertising, or consent sections for Automatic Content Recognition, viewing information, smart TV experience, Live Plus, or a comparable phrase.
After changing the setting, confirm that the consent toggle is visibly off. If a firmware update later presents a new terms screen, review it again; an update can reorganize or reintroduce consent choices.
2. Turn off personalized advertising and limit ad tracking
Advertising controls are distinct from viewing-data controls. Open the advertising or privacy section and disable personalized ads, ad personalization, or a limit-ad-tracking option where available. Roku documents a limit-ad-tracking control separately from its Smart TV Experience choices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis normally reduces the use of account, device, or activity information to tailor advertisements. It does not guarantee an ad-free television: ad-supported apps can still show contextual or untargeted advertisements, and the apps themselves may have additional settings.
The Federal Trade Commission advises owners of internet-connected TVs and streaming devices to review privacy settings and permissions. Apply that advice both to the television’s system menu and to individual streaming apps.

3. Restrict voice recognition, wake words, and microphones
Voice features can involve a wake-word listener, speech recognition, a microphone in the remote, or a microphone built into the TV. Turn off the parts you do not need rather than assuming that an advertising preference controls voice collection.
Samsung voice functions
Samsung states that its voice functions are enabled only after users agree to a separate Samsung Privacy Policy and Terms of Use during initial setup. Samsung also says voice commands are collected when a user makes a specific search request by activating the TV’s voice function. Review the voice-assistant, voice recognition, and terms controls in the TV’s privacy menu, and decline or disable them if hands-free search is not important to you.

Roku provides microphone controls for voice-enabled remotes. If you do not use voice search, disable the remote’s microphone or voice feature in the relevant privacy or remote settings. Button-based navigation remains available.
LG microphones and speech-to-text
On supported LG models, a dedicated hardware microphone switch can disable the TV’s built-in microphone. LG says speech-to-text processing begins when a supported voice interaction is activated. A hardware switch offers a clear physical indication that the built-in microphone is off, but the exact feature is model-dependent.
The practical trade-off
Disabling microphone or voice access removes voice search and hands-free control. It does not prevent ordinary button-based navigation, HDMI use, or streaming through apps that do not require voice input.

4. Review app permissions and remove apps you no longer use
Every installed app expands the software that can access data or communicate over the network. Uninstall apps that you no longer use, especially those installed for a one-time trial or an old service.
Google TV and Android TV
- Open Settings > Apps > Security & restrictions to review the platform’s app-security controls.
- Open the Google Play Store on the TV and check for Play Protect warnings or privacy alerts.
- Inspect an app’s permissions before keeping it. Pay particular attention to access involving personal information, the microphone, nearby devices, or network communication.
- Uninstall apps that are unnecessary, unsupported, or installed from a source you do not trust.
Google documents Play Protect privacy alerts for apps that can access personal information or violate policy. Keep the checker enabled and treat a warning as a reason to investigate the app rather than dismissing it automatically.
Other television platforms
Names and locations differ in proprietary app stores. Use the platform’s app-management screen to inspect permissions, uninstall unused software, and disable automatic installation from untrusted sources where that option exists. If an app has no visible permission controls, limit what information you provide to it and consider removing it.
5. Keep software updates and security checks enabled
Install operating-system and firmware updates offered by the television maker. Updates can fix security defects, correct privacy controls, and change the location or wording of consent options.
There is no universal update schedule or guaranteed support period covering every brand and model. If continued updates matter for a particular television, check that model’s support page and note the latest available firmware before buying or deploying it. Avoid installing firmware from unofficial files or websites.

6. Check accounts, consent, and network access
Reduce account exposure
- Sign out of accounts that are no longer needed, such as an old streaming profile or a previous owner’s account.
- Use a separate profile for guests when the platform supports it, instead of sharing your primary account credentials.
- Review saved payment methods and remove those that the household no longer uses.
Revisit consent after major changes
Open the television maker’s privacy, consent, and terms menus after a major firmware update or factory reset. A setup wizard can ask for permissions again, and a new service can add a separate consent screen. Record which choices you made so you can spot an unexpected change later.
Use the network as an additional control layer
Router- or DNS-level filtering can block some tracking domains independently of the television’s menus. This is an advanced, model-independent option, but it can also break sign-in, advertising-supported playback, software updates, or other app functions. Apply network filtering only after noting which services the household needs, and be prepared to allow-list a domain when an app stops working.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare privacy controls across TV platforms
When choosing between televisions or deciding whether to use a built-in interface, compare the controls below rather than relying on a generic “privacy mode” label.
| Control area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| ACR scope | Whether the opt-out covers antenna and HDMI inputs as well as built-in apps | External sources can reveal viewing activity even when you watch through a cable box or game console |
| Voice controls | Whether wake-word listening, voice recognition, and microphone access can be disabled separately | Separate switches let you keep ordinary remote control without leaving an unnecessary microphone active |
| Advertising controls | Whether ad-personalization choices are separate from viewing-data consent | You can limit profiling without confusing an advertising choice with an ACR opt-out |
| App security | Whether permissions are visible and whether a checker such as Play Protect is available | System privacy settings cannot compensate for an untrusted or over-permissioned app |
A practical first-day privacy checklist
- Open the TV’s privacy or consent menu and photograph or note the original settings.
- Disable ACR, Smart TV Experience, Viewing Information Services, Live Plus, or the equivalent viewing-data feature.
- Turn off personalized advertising and enable a limit-ad-tracking choice where offered.
- Disable voice recognition, wake-word listening, and microphone access that you do not use.
- Review installed apps and permissions; uninstall unused or untrusted apps.
- Run the platform’s security checker, such as Play Protect on Google TV or Android TV.
- Install the latest official software update, then revisit the privacy menu.
- Sign out of unnecessary accounts and review saved payment and profile information.
- Test essential services after any router or DNS filtering change.
Troubleshooting common privacy-setting problems
The ACR option is missing
Search for Smart TV Experience, viewing information, Live Plus, advertising, or consent rather than only the letters “ACR.” The option can move after a firmware update and can be unavailable on a particular model or in a particular region. Check the exact model manual or support page if the control cannot be found.
Voice search still appears after disabling the microphone
Check both the TV and the remote. A television may have a built-in microphone switch while a voice-enabled remote has its own microphone control. Also review permissions for individual apps that offer voice input.
Best Value
An app stopped working after a privacy change
First identify whether the failure followed a TV setting, an app-permission change, or network filtering. Restore only the specific permission or domain the app requires, then test again. Do not re-enable every tracking option by default.
A factory reset brought the prompts back
A reset erases consent choices and accounts. Complete the setup without accepting optional viewing-data, advertising, or voice features, then repeat the app and update review before signing in to services.
What these changes do—and do not—protect
Disabling ACR limits the television platform’s stated viewing-data collection through that feature; it does not make every app anonymous. Streaming services, advertising companies, broadband providers, and accounts can have their own data practices. Likewise, turning off personalized advertising reduces profiling for ad selection but does not remove all advertisements.
The strongest practical approach is layered: opt out of viewing recognition, restrict microphones, minimize apps and permissions, keep official security updates active, and monitor accounts and network behavior. Recheck the settings whenever the TV is reset, receives a major update, changes ownership, or gains a new voice or advertising service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling ACR stop every form of viewing tracking?
No. It disables the television platform’s ACR feature, but individual streaming apps and signed-in services can apply their own data practices and settings.
Will turning off personalized ads remove advertisements?
No. It generally reduces ad personalization. Ad-supported apps can still show contextual or untargeted advertisements.
Can I keep using the remote after disabling the microphone?
Yes. Button-based navigation continues to work; voice search and hands-free commands are the features you give up.
Why did my privacy choices change after an update or reset?
Firmware updates can reorganize consent menus, while a factory reset erases prior choices. Revisit the privacy and terms screens after either event.
