Offline mode and disconnecting Wi‑Fi are different things. An offline or basic mode is a platform-specific setup state that may leave a television tuner and connected inputs available while omitting internet-dependent smart features. Disconnecting Wi‑Fi simply removes the TV’s wireless network connection. The TV’s own streaming apps then cannot play online video, but HDMI devices, antenna reception and other non-network functions may continue to work.
If the TV also has an Ethernet cable or another network path, turning off Wi‑Fi alone does not make it fully offline. Conversely, you can keep the TV disconnected while an external streaming player connects to the internet separately and sends video through HDMI.

What the two terms actually mean
Offline or basic mode
“Offline mode” is not a universal setting shared by every smart-TV brand. It usually describes a setup choice offered by a particular operating system. Google, for example, calls its supported setup option Basic Mode. Google says it is available only on some Google TV and Android TV devices and can be selected without an internet connection.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A basic mode can simplify the interface and omit account-dependent services, app installation and online search. The exact list depends on the television, operating system, region, firmware and whether the TV was already configured. A menu option with “basic,” “offline” or “limited” in its name should therefore be treated as a platform feature, not a guarantee that every network service or tracking function is disabled.

Disconnecting the TV from Wi‑Fi
Disconnecting Wi‑Fi is a network action: the television leaves a wireless network or forgets its saved wireless credentials. Its own online apps lose that route to the internet. The display, tuner and physical inputs are not turned off by the same action.
That distinction matters if the television is also connected by Ethernet, a USB network adapter or another supported route. In that case, Wi‑Fi may show as disconnected while the TV remains online. Check all network connections when the objective is to remove the TV’s internet access completely.
Privacy or interface controls
Privacy controls and simplified home screens answer a third question. Google TV’s Apps only mode, for instance, removes personalized recommendations from the home screen, but Google says activity and individual apps can still affect personalization. An automatic content recognition (ACR) opt-out changes a data-collection setting; it does not necessarily remove the TV from the network.

| Question | Offline/basic mode | Disconnecting Wi‑Fi |
|---|---|---|
| What changes? | A platform-specific setup or operating state; availability is not universal. | The TV’s wireless network link is removed. |
| Can the tuner or physical inputs work? | Often, where the model supports them; Google documents tuner and connected-input viewing in Basic Mode. | Usually yes; Samsung documents HDMI and terrestrial over-the-air viewing without a Samsung Account login. |
| Can built-in online apps stream? | Generally not without internet access, and some account-dependent features are unavailable. | Not over the disconnected Wi‑Fi path. |
| Does it guarantee privacy? | No. The effect depends on what that platform mode disables. | It blocks communication over that route while disconnected, but it is not a substitute for privacy settings or proof that earlier data was erased. |
| When is it selected? | Often during initial setup on supported devices. | Usually from network settings, with labels that vary by manufacturer. |
| Can streaming continue another way? | Yes, through an external player connected to HDMI and the internet separately. | Yes, under the same separate-player arrangement. |
What can you still watch when the TV is disconnected?
Over-the-air antenna channels
If the television has a tuner and an antenna connected, broadcast channels can remain available because reception comes through the antenna rather than the TV’s internet connection. Google lists antenna and tuner viewing as examples of what can work in Basic Mode. Channel-guide features that depend on an online service may behave differently, so the ability to receive a channel does not imply that every guide or recommendation feature remains available.
Cable and satellite receivers
A cable box or satellite receiver sends its picture through a physical input. The TV can display that HDMI or other connected-input source while its own network connection is off. The receiver itself may still need an internet or service-provider connection for on-demand catalogs, guide data or other features; disconnecting the TV does not disconnect that separate device.

Game consoles, disc players and other HDMI equipment
Any source that delivers video through HDMI can continue to be shown when the TV is offline. This includes a game console, disc player or another existing video device. Whether the source can access online services is determined by the source’s own connection, not by the TV’s Wi‑Fi setting.
Local or built-in television functions
Menus, picture controls, speakers and other local functions do not require a live internet session. Some TV platforms may continue showing app icons even though those apps cannot fetch online video. An icon’s presence is not evidence that the TV is connected or that playback will work.
What stops working without the TV’s internet connection?
The TV’s built-in streaming apps need network access to authenticate, load catalogs and fetch video. With Wi‑Fi disconnected and no alternate route, online playback cannot work through those apps. App search, installation, cloud-linked libraries, voice content search and account-based recommendations can also be unavailable in a basic setup. Google specifically lists Google-account services, Play Library access, app search or installation and Assistant content search as unavailable in its Basic Mode.
Some services may still open to an error page or display cached artwork. That behavior varies by app and firmware and should not be confused with offline playback. A previously signed-in account also does not make a streaming app independent of the network; the service still has to reach its servers.
How to disconnect a smart TV from Wi‑Fi
Menu names differ by brand and model, but the following procedure fits most recent televisions. Use the on-screen network status after each step rather than relying only on a missing Wi‑Fi icon.

- Choose a section named Network, Connection, General or All settings.
- Open Network status, Wi‑Fi or Wireless.
- Select the current wireless network and choose Disconnect, Forget or Remove network. On some models, a Wi‑Fi toggle appears instead.
- Return to the network-status screen and confirm that the TV reports no internet connection.
- Unplug any Ethernet cable or supported network adapter if you want the TV to have no network path at all.
Forgetting a network removes the saved credentials; toggling Wi‑Fi off may leave them stored for later reconnection. Neither action necessarily changes privacy agreements, account data or ACR settings.

On a supported Google TV device, the Basic Mode choice appears during initial setup. Google’s help documentation says: “If you want to use your Google TV device without a Google Account and/or without an internet connection, you can choose basic TV when you first set up your Google TV device (only available on some devices).”
In that mode, Google documents viewing through a cable service, satellite, TV tuner, antenna or another input plugged into the television. It also documents the loss of Google-account-dependent services, Play Library access, app search or installation and Assistant content search. A reset may be required to return to the initial setup screen, so check your model’s instructions before choosing that route on a configured TV.
Other platforms may offer a similarly limited setup, or no offline setup option at all. Do not infer availability from another television in the same household. The model, sales region and software version can change the choices shown during setup.
How to verify that the TV is really offline
- Check the TV’s Network status page for both Wi‑Fi and wired connections.
- Look for an Ethernet cable at the TV and any network adapter attached to it.
- Open a built-in streaming app and note whether it reports a connection error rather than starting playback.
- Switch to an antenna or HDMI source to confirm that non-network viewing still works.
- Check the router’s connected-device list if you need to confirm that the television has not joined another saved network.
A router may continue to show a device for a short time after disconnection because of cached connection information. That listing alone does not prove that the TV is still exchanging current traffic.

Privacy: does disconnecting Wi‑Fi stop smart-TV tracking?
It stops the TV from sending information over the disconnected network route while it remains offline. It does not establish that the television never stored information locally, erased previously collected records or will not transmit stored data after reconnection. Those questions require model- and software-specific evidence.
ACR and other optional settings
Samsung describes ACR as an optional feature on applicable Smart TVs. Samsung says that, when enabled, ACR may create signatures associated with viewing history, TV identifiers and an IP address, and that the setting can be changed in TV preferences. Samsung also says it does not record or watch the content displayed on the TV. These are Samsung’s descriptions of its feature and controls, not a universal description of every television.
LG describes separate controls for optional services such as ACR, voice recognition and interest-based advertising. LG says declining optional agreements does not prevent core smart-TV functionality, while availability depends on the market and the agreements presented there.
What independent testing found
A peer-reviewed 2024 ACM Internet Measurement Conference study tested Samsung and LG smart-TV platforms using black-box experiments. Its abstract reports that ACR worked when the tested televisions were used as external displays, that opting out stopped traffic to ACR servers in the tested cases, and that results differed between the United Kingdom and the United States. Those findings apply to the tested platforms and conditions; they are not a guarantee for every model, region or software version.
A practical privacy checklist
- Review ACR or “viewing information” controls separately from network settings.
- Check voice-recognition, advertising and interest-based options.
- Read the current consent screen for your region; optional-service names and availability can change.
- Disconnect the TV’s network when you want to remove its current online route.
- Before reconnecting, review whether any privacy settings were reset by a firmware update or factory reset.
How to stream while keeping the TV offline
Use an external HDMI streaming player that has its own internet connection. Connect the player to the TV’s HDMI input, connect the player—not the television—to Wi‑Fi or Ethernet, and select that HDMI input on the TV. The television then acts as a display while the external device handles app sign-in, catalog access and video delivery.

- Free Content: Stream for free. Access over 1 million free movies and TV episodes from popular ad-supported streaming apps like Fire TV Channels, Tubi, and Pluto TV. Subscriptions may be required. Feature and content availability may vary.
- Plug the external player into an available HDMI port and its power source.
- Complete the player’s setup using its own network connection.
- On the TV, select the HDMI input used by the player.
- Leave the TV’s Wi‑Fi disabled and its Ethernet cable disconnected.
- Use the player’s remote or control app for streaming services.
This arrangement does not make the entire household network private: the external player is still online, and its own apps and settings determine what data it sends. It simply prevents the television itself from needing a network connection. If an antenna, cable box, satellite receiver, console or disc player already meets your needs, buying another streaming device is unnecessary.
Choosing the right approach
Choose basic/offline setup when
- You are setting up a supported device for the first time and want no account or internet-dependent home-screen features.
- You mainly use an antenna, cable, satellite or physical HDMI source.
- You accept that app installation, online search and cloud libraries may be unavailable.
Choose Wi‑Fi disconnection when
- The TV is already configured and you want a reversible network change.
- You want to keep existing picture, tuner and HDMI behavior without resetting the television.
- You plan to use an external player with its own connection.
Change privacy settings as well when
- Your concern is viewing-data collection, voice processing or targeted advertising rather than connectivity alone.
- You want to control ACR independently of whether the TV is online.
- You need settings that remain in force when the TV reconnects later.
Common problems and fixes
“I turned off Wi‑Fi, but an app still works.”
Check for Ethernet or another network route first. If none exists, the app may be showing cached content or a device-generated screen rather than live playback. Confirm the TV’s network-status page and test a service that requires a fresh connection.
“The apps are still visible, so the TV must be online.”
Not necessarily. App icons can remain in the launcher after network access is removed. Visibility is an interface state; playback requires the app’s servers to be reachable.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“My antenna channels disappeared after setup.”
Open the TV’s input or live-TV selector and confirm that the antenna cable is connected to the tuner input. A basic setup can expose different menus, and some models require a channel scan before terrestrial channels appear.
“The external player says there is no internet.”
The player has its own connection requirements. Check its Wi‑Fi or Ethernet status, confirm that the player is connected to the intended network, and verify that the TV is set to the correct HDMI input. Disconnecting the TV does not provide connectivity to the player.
“I reconnected the TV and privacy behavior changed.”
Review ACR, advertising, voice and consent settings again. A reconnection, reset or software update can present new agreements or different labels, and privacy controls are separate from the network toggle.
Bottom line
Use the terms precisely: basic or offline mode is a limited platform setup available only on some televisions, while disconnecting Wi‑Fi removes one network connection. Either approach can leave antenna reception and HDMI sources usable, but the TV’s own online apps need internet access. For streaming without putting the television itself online, use a separately connected HDMI player and verify that the TV has no Ethernet or alternate network path. If privacy is the goal, make the network change and review ACR and other optional data controls separately.
